Physicist here, and I've been surprised this hasn't been done for years so I'm glad they finally caught up. Anyway, whilst it might make the bat feel lighter the physics doesn't make the bat swing faster - it's just tricking your brain into thinking that. You've just got the same bat plus extra inboard weight; nothing there increases speed. So that part is a myth. However what it DOES do is shift the sweet spot of the bat slightly further outboard which will create more bat speed where the ball is being hit. On top of that it also reduces the energy transfer back into the bat slightly and so more energy is transferred towards the ball. There's a lot of scientific papers written on this subject in the form of swords and pommels - the physics here is identical. I'd also imagine the hits to be slightly better when not on the sweet spot and to hurt your hands slightly less though I've not read that point in any papers. It's purely an assumption from how the physics plays out.
What's more, none of this will show up in testing. They test the coefficient of restitution of the bat - the speed of a ball coming in and going out of a bat locked in place being shot at with a pitching machine. This only shows up when the bat is held at the base and being swung at a ball like a batter. So it's just pure benefit, the only real disadvantage is in the mass of wood potentially getting in the way of the batter's wrist or being annoying.
Go off playa
Let him cook
mizuno made a bat like this 30 years ago never caught on but I had one
it has been done for years, this is a huge factor in golf, tennis and other swing sports
@@mrob8982 It makes a lot of sense that they didn't try it again for a while then. The physics are so unbelievably clear so it was baffling that it wasn't a thing, but for sure if it failed already they're going to be very reluctant.
Nothing better than hearing a quality wood bat just mash a baseball. Had my AirPods cranked lmao
Hearing losss 😂
I could listen to that all day!! Just might be the best sound ever
The evolution of wood bats is interesting, since at the beginning of the sport, the bats didn't have a lot of taper going down to the handle. The handles were very thick, so there was quite a bit of weight at the hands. Then the handles started to become thinner and thinner into the current modern era. Now, with these puck bats, it's like more weight is being placed near the hands again, but distributed below the hands rather than in the handle. Curious to see if this trend gathers any momentum.
Just so you know that this isn’t a new trend. It’s an old trend made new. The majority of bats from the 1880’s and early 1900’s had this design.
I’ve seen every team has a guy or 2 using puck knob
Finally swinging wood bats again, praise the baseball gods
lol JT just casually hitting HR
Former Pro golfer here. Just noticing that Will is gripping the bat pretty far into the knob. It might feel better (guessing that’s why you’re doing it) but the more you grip into the knob the less effect of the counterbalance. Probably why you’re only feeling a slight effect difference compared to JT. If you look at the MLB guys and where they are gripping it, you’ll notice there is almost space between their lowest hand and the knob. So moral of this story is if you want the counterbalance to work then you have to use it correctly. Cheers. By the way if you ever come back out to Kansas let me know. I’d be curious if a Pro golfer that hasn’t played baseball since the 90’s could hit one out. No practice before of course.
Thank you for explaining the puck knob. So much information when it comes to picking a baseball bat.
I could LIVE on the sound from this video alone. Love the wood bat vids!!!
Been waiting for this.
I've got a weird spinal problem, front shoulder is literally higher than the other. Makes barrel dip an annoying problem for me since my shoulders are literally not level to start with.
Hard to say if the velo difference is because of the extra weight or shape, could just be a better piece of wood with tighter grain where it matters. Would need to test a larger sample size to really figure it out, but what you're seeing does make sense.
The puck knob is always gonna result in a lower MOI/swing weight and a slightly less-dense wood. So it makes sense that velos would be down a little bit.
If the puck knob is more of a contact hitter's knob, is it better for contact hitter's than an axe handle?
@baseballbatbros would getting a -2 help with the density issue? And would it kind of offset the benefits of the puck?
I think so, yes
Yes and yes! 😂
Easton hype fire verses the green zen would be a banger
I just bought the AP5 puck knob today. I wanted to try it out and see if it makes a difference in my swing. From a person who hasn't swung a bat in 5 plus years, I did notice a difference from the puck knob vs standard knob. I felt the puck knob does help with your swing. Also, going back to the regular AP5 standard knob i really noticed my bat speed. I'm going to keep swinging both and see how I feel about.
Would love for you guys to do a follow-up video to see how you really feel about it.
I am no physicist or bat engineer but i am a tennis pro and have been customizing racquets for quite some time. We have been adding weight to the handles for years to make the racquet more whippy but with over all the same if not a little more static weight. There is a unit of measurement in tennis racquets called swingweight though and its kind of the big tell on how heavy a racquet is actually gonna be while swinging. It also can indicate how much power a racquet will have sometimes. More weight normally means more boom. We calculate manually via a a math problem or with a machine. I would imagine bats and the development of them could use a unit of measurement like this. I have always wondered why bat development never went that direction.
The wood bat pops are the best form of ASMR
I have a Goods that I received from a teammate of mine. He wrapped the bat somewhat similar to how you would see a puck knob and it’s got a massive flare/knob at the end so you don’t really Grip it at the end, rather you just choke up about an inch on it or whatever you feel comfortable having your bottom hand at and it acts something similar to the puck knob. There’s so much material towards the handle that it moves the weights from the “D” to about an inch or two above the connector piece. Ultimately making it a balanced goods.
I was just looking at knobs on American batsmith and I was wondering about this knob thanks for the vid.
If you want a pick knob and don’t care to much about how it looks then go to American bat smith they have a really large selection of models with almost any knob you want
Interesting video, much appreciated fellas. Keep up the metadata of baseball science.
LETS GO!! Been waiting for this one dudes!
We the Easton hype fire while using the 2019 ‘juiced’ MLB baseballs😮😮😮
Interesting, I’ve been following you guys from the UK for years and this idea of a counterweight on the end of the handle has been around in cricket for a while. Personally I like it on a bat, especially when using a heavier bat for shorter forms of the game..
Thanks for doing another wood bat video.
Would love to see you add a Blast Motion sensor to your videos to see some of those data points. JT's hand speed looks impressive to me. Would have been cool to have that when you started this channel and compare it to present day.
Solid analysis per usual
My batting coach told me to go watch baseball bat bros to decide what BBCOR bat I would want and you guys are amazing!
i wonder if it makes a difference where you hold it with the puck knob. I feel like some of the guys swinging it almost choke up a tad with the puck knob as opposed to holding it further down similar to having your pinky slightly off the end of a regular taper.
😂 We all would love an extra 1/2 inch out 🤘😎.
The sounds in this video butter my biscuit
Love the blue Jordan’s Will!
Definitely need an overly balanced drop 0 vs overly endloaded drop 3 wood bat comparison. American Batsmith S44 -0 vs American Batsmith TS28 -3, for example
I think id really depends on that kind of swing you put on it. it will definitely help with hitters that have more twist in the wrist. Will uses his rear elbow to turn the barrel and snaps forward with the wrist. There is a lot less twist. So it I think it comes down to the approach, angles, and weather you are twisting the wrist to contact.
a west coast league stadium tour would be sick! make it a fundraiser or fund for more content! love to see yall come to bellingham (home of the bells)
I need you to test out a Liquid Metal Plasma it was an underrated juiced to the gills bat from the BESR era but i feel like you are the guy who could find one
@baseballbatbros I just got the select pwr and im launching the ball but it makes a high pitched sound, how do i make it sound cool like a gun shot just like in your videos?
The Dovetiail 243 PUCK Knob is one of my go to’s for my left handed side (Switch Hitter here) got most of my teammates on it and they absolutely rake with it along with a Mizuno VKong we have. I’m curious as to how the PUCK ProXR knob could be from Dovetail Bats as well
Do you think the puck would work for a bbcor
@@Guzberry- not necessarily. As a skinny 5’5 dude I can swing most BBCOR’s with ease. Some wood bats with larger barrels and weight usually merits a puck knob
We need another wood bat madness
JT's swing so damn clean.
We need the goods 2 piece vs each other which one is better and has the most exit velo
Do an Axe Handle vs Regular Handle! Love your vids!
The fact that you guys never break wood bats in these tests shows you guys are legit lol
They did a few times
Will dripped out in the new merch 🤌
Have you guys heard anything about the puck knob being for keeping from rolling over and keeping barrel in zone longer?
Would love to see you guys give Cash Cow bats a swing. They make puck, no knob, flare knob etc. and are priced super well. One guy makes them and he does some cool stuff with the cupping on the ends of the bats to get weight off them.
See how much better your velo got after switching back to the regular bat even being tired and stuff? I think that means the luck bat did its job.
So same concept as axe more barrel control and stay in the zone longer n hit line drives for singles doubles and triples
You guys should use the red stealth xl
Love the vids. Bring back cat 9 comp vs hype fire
There it is!
Back in the late 90’s I swung a metal Mizuno little league bat that had a puck knob. I can’t remember the model though.
So THAT is why Mizuno had those huge knobs on their metal bats in the 90's.
Can you review a camwood game bat?
JT swing lookin crisp
Nice Jordans 👍
How u grip a bat could also affect how well the puck knob works for u. If ur a guy who holds it really low on the handle or even slightly over the knob like Will it won’t work as well for u as someone who holds it normally or even choked up. To sum up what I’m saying: the higher up on the handle u hold, the stronger the effect, the lower, the less the effect
Is this a scam?
If you were to choose any usssa bat that cost a maximum of $300 which would you choose I am a 12 year old and weigh 175 I’m leaning towards getting a cat x one piece, Zoa, and the Easton hype comp all drop 5 32 inches
How durable is the bonesaber hybird?
Do you think we will start seeing this in alloy bats like with the axe handle? Or would it not be if it as much
Nah
If possible, Y’all should review the Rawlings Pro Preferred line of wood bats. That would be sick
So if I’m custom ordering one and I want a 33.5” do I need to order a 34.5” or do they take that into consideration and a 33.5” doesn’t include the puck?

wish they made puck knobs when I was playing. if you add some metal washers to the knob it works even better, the wood is too light still. It allows the bat's balance point to get closer to the handle node. you must choke up a little so your bottom hand doesn't touch the knob.
We need more jaw bat content
Need a Vandal Lev 3 review!!!
VANDAL REVIEW🚨🚨❗️❗️
Review on Rawlings Mach AI soon?
The Meda USA T-ball bat is now only 5995 Louisville slugger
I got a question.... has anyone else ever got a Demarini 2 piece bat delivered, and when you received it, the bat is crooked? The handle and the barrel are definitely off a little on my son's The Goods 2 piece bat. Driving me crazy.
If anyone paid attention to Barry Bonds' bat you'd know this isn't such a new concept. Massive knob that he gripped above for better barrel control and bat speed.
You should check out the Soldier tank bat
We need to see a all voodoo showdown 2013-2024
If you ever do a small bat company challenge, id like to send you guys a few of my bats.
Kinda like the camwood bat but no weight above the hands????
I wonder what swinging a bamboo puck knob bat would be like. That'll be a cool idea to see if it's possible to get one made. ✌🏻⚾💥🎍
I’m so excited for the 2024 the goods do y’all think it has a shot of breaking the top 3 bbcor
New connector piece. Should resolve durability issues. Would love to see how it stacks up against the Bonesaber Hybrid, Select Power and Icon
That’s the smartes idea with the bbcor because In my school we use to do that
I can’t wait to get the warstic
Can you please do a video on the 2024 Rawlings Mach AI when it comes out on September 1st?
Now gotta see the axe handle with puck. Get all of the fads together!
Been wanting a Puck knob gotta sell some of my other bats first lol
Which is the best out of these Mach ai, goods one piece2024, and the atlas
We needa review on the new marrucci f5
what is lighter?? cat 9 or bonesaber hybrid??
Really similar swing weight between those 2. But I think the Bonesaber Hybrid is definitely better.
@@baseballbatbros alright cool cause im looking for a gamer for highschool this year and my cat 9 is kinda dying out on me so thanks for the help
I think doing a puck then adding an ounce is usually what guys do for that velo difference
At marucci World Series they showcased a cat x puck knob.
video idea: best bats for high schoolers, so like your usssa composite matchups but with bbcor bats for high schooler, also would love to see select pwr vs icon!
hey will and jt, just wondering if you are going to do anymore slopitch bat reviews or if you are focused more on baseball bat content thanks in advance
Review the victus vandal lev 3
White cf zen vs Easton hype fire
Please Will another bat madness
You guys should try out the krato bat weight, it’s a cool weight that goes above your hands.
It's just a training tool right?
Basically it is. I helps creat proper swing path and helps you keep your hands in. Plus with the placement you can go much heavier with the weight
It basically lets you turn any bat into a camwood I believe.
@brettlosier8876 yes but there are much heavier weights
JT’s hyperdunks🔥🔥
Found em at goodwill for 20 bucks bro
@@jtbatbro holy steal
Are they the same price?
Nice vid
Can you guys try the soldier tank BBCOR?
Real question tho, if Joey Gallo is one of the primary players using the puck knob, and he hits the way he does, is that a good thing to promote it with his name?
Camwood makes a puck bat and it’s the same price as their other bats.
Please review wood bats from Souders Bat Company.
Theres a new catX 2024!! you should try it!
