How much hotter is a METAL BAT than a WOOD BAT? | Baseball Bat Bros feat. PJ Morlando

- Today we're joined by MLB Draft prospect PJ Morlando to compare the current standard for high school & college metal bats (BBCOR) to a WOOD bat (used by MLB/MILB/NPB).
And for fun, we also brought out a couple illegal old-standard metal bats from the 1990s and 2000s.

Two things are true in sports:
Left handed QBs look weird throwing the ball
Left handed hitters swinging the bat is a thing of beauty
You're right buddy 🤌
My buddies think It's weird that I swing left but golf right.
Griffey Jr. sweetest left swing ever (unless being compared to Lefty Will 🤣)
@@robertflint4115I concur, Griffey's swing should be memorialized in the Louvre
🤣👍@@CowboyFate
Introducing Mike Piazz, the righty-hitter who lefties wish their swing looked like: czcams.com/video/ga2Wl1EXr9s/video.html
PJ’s swing seems effortless and yet is hitting laser beams at 115mph
Kinda reminds me of Carlos Gonzalez in his older years. He was an average hitter by then, and hes never been a super huge dude, 6'1 200ish max. But he just had such a good power swing that hed still routinely hit 116+ mph balls. The lefty swings seem to impart way more energy onto the ball, the bat in just in the zone for so long and it stays in contact with the ball for longer than a righty swing does.
imagine Giancarlo Stanton swinging a old school metal bat, hope one day we'll get to see it on this channel.
Richie Sexson and Adrian Beltre would bring out a 90’s metal bat during BP in Seattle. Absolute bombs that would leave the whole stadium. Minimum to get out is 472’.
Stanton's high school field had their football stadium behind left field and a residential street behind right field. He regularly put balls on their football field and in yards of the houses behind right. BESR era right before the Stealth Comps
I feel like Ive seen either him or judge swing one, but i cant remember where
never played baseball - never watched baseball - Love this channel
Same here, I only subscribed to this channel to watch wood bat reviews for the purpose of finding reasonably priced solid single-grain bats to beat a couple of balls around.
Never too late to start
I have NEVER even heard of baseballs but I LOVE this channel !!!
@@tredogzs 🤣😂
That kids got one of the smoothest swings I’ve seen in a long time!🔥🔥🔥
I agree
Very little movement pre contact. Interesting.
Love seeing this future pro just have fun on a baseball field - wish the pro game could capture that more
this vid was dope 🔥 nothing fancy, super simple, just a couple mashers having a great time hitting bombs. the laughter and hype between everyone in these vids is contagious man. don't ever stop doing these
“I think 112 is plenty appropriate”… will properly shitting himself 😂😂
Banger vid!!!! Bro!!! Favorite quote.... " DUDE!! I think 112 mph is plenty appropriate." Next hit 113 mph geez!!. Love these type of videos. I played in my teens with the Easton 90's bat.
I remember hearing that 112 mph plus speed flying off the bat in my baseball era thinking OMG do not get hit by the ball. We had hitters smashing heaters!!!!
90s bat turned PJ into Ohtani
Will. We need you to hit the juiced 2019 MLB balls with the hype fire
He needs to use them with a senior softball bat and go for 130
he alr did in his new breaking the world record vid with eric sim he used hype fires and rawlings icon usssa's.
Yes Bro
@@smokez4285 yeah
@@theclankilleregg754 those were regular MLB balls
Kids swing is gorgeous, was not expecting that type of power either. That was fun to watch him hit!
You guys are my favorite baseball CZcamsrs I actually picked up device from you and bought the hype fire 🔥. Keep up the great work I love your vids!
Respect for showing that strike! 👏🏾
We played on that exact field yesterday!! Great complex! Love the vids!
I miss seeing Bat Bro Trace, but Will has done an amazing job of showcasing "new" talent. PJ seems like a class act with a heck of a swing. Wish him luck in the future.
Always fun videos to watch. You swinging the icon is crazy! Also, when will we see the icon vs. select power video??
Im gonna have my kid study this kid's load-to-launch. Beautiful!
There really is something special about a wood bat sound.
Love that by the end you're non-chelantly mentioning that THE BOMB OF A HIT...hit the boat in the harbor.
Bro i am so happy to see a vid with bonesaber hybrid lone star editon 🌟 thanks
boys this video was too smooth all around
Love that braves hat man… I really enjoy your channel keep up the great work
Shipyard Park is underrated. You got to see it in person
Fr my travelball team when there recently
Will, I have designed a wood bat that is based off 100% vibrational frequencies and I am confident that it can keep up with any bbcor bat on the market. And not just with pop but with sweet spot and swing weight. I just need more people to swing it because I have been constantly injured over the past 4 years and cant run my own tests. Help a brother out in need.
That sounds like such a sick concept
@@masoncollins40 yeah in theory it is suppose to reverberate some of the vibration back into the ball and add performance to the bat.
Will, you should review anchor bat co. Wood bats, I got one from ship yard park a few years ago and it’s my favorite wood bat. Love the vids🔥
and you always have to burst my "in my day" bubble by bringing facts of 90s bats up; wish I could find my 1991 Easton and give it a cuddle for the memories...
10:50 the deuce bigalow sound effect 😭
Man, this is home! I wish I knew you guys were out at Shipyard.
I played a wood bat tournament at shipyard a year ago and it’s my favorite field I’ve ever played at with amazing food
I played a championship game at shipyard that afternoon. Also you should make a video on the lower state championship controversy. Pj almost hit a bomb at the lower state championship but it was caught by our center fielder. PJ gives respect where it’s do and tipped his hat to the center fielder all the way back to the dugout. I wish the best for PJ when he gets drafted because I’m a lefty too and he’s a really good dude.
I’ve also hit with him before and he’s just a normal dude who’s not too caught up in the fame and stays humble and keeps working towards his goals
Do you guys have any wood bat recommendations for something that has a similar swing weight feel to the cat x connect? Looking for a summer ball bat.
Love this! Sorry, two questions that have very little to do with each other, but how much of a difference do you notice in exit velo between when you change the machine speed. In this video you didn't mention it, but in a recent one you did and it got me thinking about an argument I got in (with a doctor no less!) when I said how with new exit velo recording and what not we're learning that the old adage of the pitcher supplying the juice when they throw hard isn't really all that true. Have you noticed higher exit velo off of higher machine speed?
Secondly, since I mentioned softball, that channel is (seemingly) dead, but do you yourself still get out and get to enjoy it or has this channel blowing up kinda put that on the backburner?
High pitch velo makes it harder to square up the pitch; you have less time to react & the timing for the swing is even tighter. But if you look at a pitcher like Hunter Greene, hitting 100+mph, vs Kyle Hendricks w/ a 4-seam around 88mph, Hendricks actually has the higher average exit velocity because you can square that up so much more easily.
The notion of changing your swing based on a faster or slower pitcher is incorrect, because you're going to swing the same as much as possible for consistency in the timing & angle. The most prolific power hitters have a swing speed between 75 & 80mph, with the best swinging more than 80% of the time above 75mph, & when they square it up right, it's a homerun regardless of the pitch velo. The MLB considers 75mph to be the required bat speed for hitting home runs consistently, & that doesn't change based on pitch velo.
Meanwhile, the slowest MLB swingers are in the 60s & they never hit HRs regardless of the pitch velo.
My son played at Shipyard Park! Beautiful fields
My Highschool Baseball field was ridiculously far to center field. It had a 20 foot high hill and a 6 foot fence you had to clear but that was probably 440+ feet away from home plate. The hill was inside the fence so it was in play. I would love to see you guys go and hit home runs at fields like this. I want to see you hit bombs in parks we once considered to be bomb proof.
Felt 100 years old when he said the Orange Stealth is a 90s bat lol
Having swung both there’s something about when you square it up with the wood barrel it feels like nothing and just flies. It’s extremely satisfying
Many of the complaints about metal bats are when it comes to the cheap pop up home runs and hard hitting liners of the 90s bats. The math is that at 30°, it is +5ft per mph for a total of +15 at most. However, at 40-45°, it's more like 3-4ft per mph, maybe even less because the higher you hit the ball, the more backspin and wind becomes a factor. The old adidge "it's only a home run because of the metal bats" doesn't really apply to 99% of a player's home runs
As an outfielder in the 90's you're right. Those were the highest fly balls I ever caught, but they never went out. They would just hang for what seems like forever. Now if they were hit at a lower angle they got small fast.
Invite him for the 3rd world record attempt
Interesting stuff 🤔. Good times nicely done 👍
take this man to the next world record challenge
Sweet spot is bigger on a metal bat. Also has less vibration overall, so the ball will travel further over a larger area.
118 exit velo for BP is fun to watch but it's a problem when it's coming right back at you on the mound 60 ft away (more like 55 after delivery). Those sticks aren't safe for regular play. I've seen high schoolers get permanently injured by them back when I played.
My favorite bat ever will always be the stealth comps!!!
But that Easton Reflex is 🔥🔥🔥
I was at charlsteon sc at shipyard yesterday playing in the tournament on that exact field
I want to see PJ mash with a HypeFire.
Keep up the good work guys 👍💪
Awesome vid. What was PJ’s gamer wood bat?
those distances at sea level are insane
Imagine some one just chilling in there boat and they hear some dude say “boat bombs baby”’outside what would they be thinking 😂 id be getting nervous
I have not swung a bat or even thrown a baseball since 1993 (my senior year of high school). Watching these videos makes me want to pick up a bat and just swing it. The only problem is that I have forgotten how.
04 gen 1X deuce!! 33-30, id like to see it compare! Was my go to back in high school. Still have it on the shelf.
My kid uses a USSSA bat for travel and league play but needs a USA bat for all stars. I know you did a comparison video before, but it’d be cool to see USA vs USSSA version for the same model to see how much difference it makes.
Gotta get this guy on the crew n next time you get to altitude🍻💪
We need to get PJ to rethink that SC commit and come to lsu lol. Stud!
Thank god u did this
I like the rocket popped bonesaber in the intro.
Shipyard park is such a nice place to play at
The slow pitch stealth was one of the most shaved bats in softball in its day. That bat was already stupid good.
Damn, he made a joke about beating PJ in exit velo and I thought, "he doesn't look too big, he should do it"...... Next clip is PJ's swing🥶
I have a orange stealth 34 x 31 i barely used It . I played In an over 35 league I believe I only paid 250 for it. I put it on ebay for 300 dollars sold it in less than 24 hour . I would have given it away until I found out how great it was from this channel. Thx Will
What pitching machine do you guys use?
The reflex had us hitting crazy nukes in travel ball 😂😂😂😂
When I played ball in the 90’s just grabbed a piece of metal and put the barrel on the ball. Not worried the exit velocity
Hey baseball bat bros, even though I'm just 12, I have some really cool bats, like the adidas phenom exo 1 and a really old softball bat that I can’t find anywhere, if you want to use them I will find a way. Love your videos!
Dude, I love Shipyard Park. Charleston and Mt. Pleasant are awesome too.
Imagine playing catch or playing g baseball and in the background you got the sound of ocean amazing
New Morlando fan here
Assuming a baseball acts similarly to a golf ball flying through the air where for whatever reason they study these things a lot more, well probably cause of releasing so much new equipment every year and the limits put on what they can do to improve them all, but while some spin is needed to get a ball in the air and maybe that right there is the difference, but the more a ball spins shorter distance it flies... it has a significant effect on driving distance too, you'll see guys with significantly higher swing speeds and ball speeds get out driven by twenty or thirty yards based on simply spinning the ball more than someone keeping their spin low... Tigers a good example of this who at one time lead the tour in smash factor or clubhead speed through contact and ball speed, but was middle of the pack in driving distrance simply because he spins the ball more than most... and its not just on a 300 yard drive, i can add ten yards of carry distance to a 100 yard wedge just by keeping my spin down, or by using a ball that spins less, and every golfer would say the same. i mean it has at least as much effect on carry distance than even ball speed does, I'd love to see a test on spin and baseballs, cause usually the more you spin a ball the less it flies. Although as i said, to low and it wont get in the air in the first place, I'd just be curious to see a study on its effect...
What mph is the machine set at when yall are hitting?
I wish MLB would do a metal bat HR derby
Also, awesome to see PJ. Just rewatched the Momentum/Eric Sim video that he appeared in. I think it was baseball H.O.R.S.E.
Yo me and PJ are friends we both live in sc and I hit my first homerun on the Stewart field at shipyard
As a USC Alum I’m glad he’s playing for us and not against us 😂
dudes committing to SC?? good lord he hits literal MISSILES and has a butter smooth swing
Must struggle vs a live arm. 2 home runs during his entire senior HS season.
Honey wake up, he’s comparing wood vs metal
This is fire
Way to go Will dropping those aqua bombs 🔥
Anyone know what pitching machine that is ?
4:27 that camera angle hits different
Will needs to use the Baum bat that he used in his exit velo showdown with Eric Sim
What was the black wood bat Pj was swinging?
This dude you got RAKES my goodness
Damn that kid got a clean swing
I agree with the backspin theory with wood bats. Taking outfield practice, a wood bat produces a lot more hang time from an outfielders point of view.
Petition to get Pj an MLB contract👇
I stand by pj's point, wood bats feel better through the zone, when it's pieced it feels better too, bbcor just makes misses turn into higher ev's i think.
Tucci Torino, I need this review, im stuck between this and the select power
Pj is him. Watched him play against west last year
Will. My team plays at shipyard park for our World Series at the end of June
Pj so dang smooth
Shipyard is awesome
The wood just feels better in the hands and sounds better with solid contact. IMO
Hey I am going into high school baseball next year and I need help choosing a bat because I am tiny but I make tons of contact
bro hits the ball fricken hard
Will you guys please do a review on the cat9?
Pj hitting bombs geez…
That bomb-pop Warstick…
called the Lonestar ;)
I think highschool and college baseball should have to use wood bats, there is no point in having a metal bat if its pretty much the same as wood in exit velo. Also wood just sounds FREAKING INCREDIBLE!
You should try the Dirty South Kamo I just got it and it’s 🔥
Won’t stop commenting till Adley Rutschman swings the Easton Reflex
