Seiko Flightmaster - Quartz Chronographs Done Right

- Today we will take a look at three Seiko flightmasters. Instantly recognizable, these watches scream "cockpit" and hold a place in everyone's collection. They all have the rotating slide rule, and add the convenience of a chronograph. One of them even adds an alarm function. Super handy!
Come check them out: longislandwatch.com/shop/?sea...
Thank you for watching. - Jak na to + styl
I'm aware there are small areas where the audio is cutting out. This is not present in the compiled video file (mp4 h264). CZcams is doing something on the upload. If you have any ideas, put them here. Thank you!
Long Island Watch youtube knocked my livestream audio 2-3 seconds off upon upload the other day... nothing could be done and i just had to move on (There was no issues during the stream) so my only suggestion is you can’t be a perfectionist and in fact I watched this video and enjoyed it
Thanks.
Couple of thoughts here ... h264 MP4 is certainly common but there could still be something about the file that YT isn't expecting, which would explain why it plays perfectly from camera/computer but not here.
Within each category for the file (container, video or audio codecs and so on) there exist several possibilities with important implications for compatibility, even among h265 MP4 files ... your new camera or editing gear is creating it differently than the old setup, methinks.
See also: support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171 ... there's a whole laundry list of arcane stuff to verify there, all which make operating a flyback chrono seem simple by comparison. :)
Thank you. I think I found the culprit; it was the encoding on the editing software. I compiled (what I call compile) with a different setting and it seems to work OK now. We shall see!!!!
@@islandwatch It could be YT's audio limiting algorithm. It sounds like the portions that are exceeding a certain RMS level are being chopped off, or even "ducked" (why it should duck or gate, only YT's engineering team can explain - who seem to be experimenting with the settings). With the next upload, try to leave the master volume about 1dB lower.
If I'm ever on a plane where the pilot becomes incapacitated mid flight. If the passengers look to me to fly the plane I'll be saying, "Me? I don't have a clue what that stuff is for?" "just thought it looked cool."
You can always say, I'm not a pilot. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night with this watch. ;)
Classic Long Island exchange right there, I love it.
“Is that a Flightmaster?”
“A WHAT?”
“Lemme see your watch”
I’ve been looking at the blue one for a while. Thank you for the in depth review! Informative and entertaining as always.
You are welcome.
Love this watch, I think it's one of the most beautiful watches around.
I have the SNA411. Great watch, highly recommend!
Thank you!
I have had mine 20 years and still works perfectly! A classic!
Joe,
How many times have you had the battery changed? Did you have Seiko do it, or a local jeweler?
Thanks, Ian
Wow, amazing!
@@ianbutler1983 battery kiosk at malls (every time). Battery usually changed every 4 or so years.
22 years now!
Just got one, after I changed the band on it, it has become one of my favorite watches. Beautiful and fun.
Like the video! Bought the 255 in my first purchase from you and am considering pulling the trigger on the 411.
Just ordered my FlightMaster SNA411, excited to get this one up in Toronto!
SNA411 was on my Amazon wishlist for a good while, until I saw your video about closing your Amazon shop. Been waiting (a short while) for it to come back in stock. Placed order today. Really appreciate your informative videos.
Merry Christmas mark!..keep up the great work.. All of us appreciate what u do!
Thanks Steven. Same to you!
Hello Mark, I have the Seiko flight master in white and blue dial with alarm ,one of my favorites , I always enjoy your reviews so keep up the great work!!
Thanks!
Got my Flightmaster (SNA411P1) today, nice and as per earlier post. Easy to set up. Going to the mall and have it sized later today. Thanks.
I have a SNA413, which seems to wear small, also because of it's white face is hard to read in poor light. However it is staying in the collection. I also have the ubiquitous SKX007 bought from you a couple of years ago, also a keeper. Thanks Mark!
Great watches, I own the flight master and love it.
Thanks for the vid.
Thanks!
The SNA411 gave me new found respect for quartz. Great build quality with 200m wr in a chronograph. It’s the type of watch that looks even better in person. I like the watch so much I would buy a second one if they came out with a new color.
SNA414, all gold with a black dial. I double-dare you.
Thanks for checking it out! And for accepting it.
Evocati That falls under user error, which is a constant if you’ve ever done technician or maintenance work. It’s the first thing any veteran tech will assume. If you buy a chrono to wear as a sport watch you should know this right off the bat.
@Evocati the pushers are screwdown as well
Thanx Marc! Good vid as always. Love my Flighty, wish I had the blue and white 413. 😁
Thank you!
My first watch at 13y.o. was a citizen flight watch. I'll always love them.
Thanks for watching.
Great review👍
This is such a useful chronograph
I had a SNA411 for years. It finally died and a local jeweler said it wouldn't be worth it to fix it and get it running again so I got a new watch. Was a great watch, got many compliments on it. Kind of want to get one again now that I know it's not discontinued. Nice video.
Wonder why he said that, you could replace the entire movement
I have owned the white and blue SNA413 Flightmaster for about 10 years. I've used on several deployments flying in Afghanistan and though it's a little beat up, as you can imagine but it's still running great. I wish they still made the white and blue I'd pick up a new one.
Nice. Always wanted to see those tow watches next to each other. Thx
Welcome!
Hi Marc always honest that’s why we trust you. Little ones do tend to be smaller loved that my friend take care.👍🏻
Thanks!
That blue dial Flighty : the very first wrist watch that made my eyes sparkle, that watch made me a wrist watch fan. Thank you Mark for this review !!!!!!!!
I have the SNA version in gold for probably 20 years. Occasional battery change and never a problem. last battery lasted 6 years. The jeweler was surprised at that. I was actually getting pretty good with the slide rule but now my eyes can't see the little numbers anymore. Anyway nice stuff.
The 2 snd versions are great watches. I'm commenting to share that the seiko instruction sheet available online gives simple 3 step method of returning each of the chronograph hands to zero if they get off zero. Very easy. Very important if you are the tiniest bit OCD about these things!!
I really like those SND I have both, I like that sliding rule diretion, calculation and units conversion useful as the chronometer for me :). It´s very confortable light and great with long sleeve shirts I prefer under 11mm thick.
Thanks! Cool watch.
I bought an SND253P1 a week ago and really like it. The 1/20 second - 12 hour chronograph with split timing is more important to me than an alarm. Since I have a slide rule collection, using the flight computer is no problem. This watch will be my everyday (beater) watch, replacing a no-name Triumph Motorcycles logo watch that gave up the ghost. For exercising, I am on my third Timex Ironman. For dressy occasions, I have two Citizen Eco-Drive chronographs and two simpler Seikos quartz watches. I will probably add an automatic watch to my collection soon and will definitely look at buying from Long Island Watch. My wife doesn’t complain about these relatively inexpensive purchases since we bought her a Rolex 20 years ago.
I love the smaller ones.Fantastic looking chrono,s without the headache at a very good price! One of our friends is a now retired jeweller who swears by Seiko quartz pieces.Having said that his collection of Seiko's going back to the 1970,s is jaw dropping!!!!!!!!!!Very rare stuff he's picked up through his career over the years. But what does he wear now....A Seiko quartz chronograph? Kind of speaks volumes.Cheers,Galloping Gertie!
LOL Len!
@@islandwatch Cheers,When my sense of humour leaves me I will assume I am possibly dead! Happy Christmas over there .If my father in law visits too often over the festive period for another game of chess I will simply pretend to be dead in any case? At least that way he can't win!
Marc, saw your video a dew days back and have it a thought, just ordered from your company the Flightmaster SNA 411P1. I think for the price it's a great watch, and looks hot. Nice to know it also warrantied through Seiko and not have headaches if something goes wrong. The price is fair, and your company has a great reputation, that and I know the money goes to a small business and not some major corporation or some off shore company just to save a few bucks.
I just bought one, based partly on this video. Plus, I wanted a watch with a ton of crap I'd never ever use and just looks cool.
I just ordered a blue one to match the motorcycle I just bought - a blue Yamaha Stratoliner. Aptly fitting, as both are the same blue and classic aircraft inspired.
As much as I like blue I think I would have to go with the 411! Thanks Marc, and a Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Thanks Steven, same to you.
Steven, thinking the same, but if I order probably would with the black face because have a Citizen Blue Angel which is blue.
Had a SNA411 ‘Flighty’ at one point. It was a great watch.
It's awesome!
Great for time speed distance calculations
I got TVG'd into buying a Flighty a year ago. Didn't really like it at first. Put it on a Goldfinger Bond NATO, and WOW! (The right NATO can make a watch pop) It's one of my fav watches now. The trick is to play with the alarm, and make it your second time zone sub-dial.
That's exactly what I was thinking of putting it on!
Just changed it to the Marine Nationale (Moss green/yellow stripe) last week. I like it even more than the Bond.
Great watches
Thanks!
Just happen to be wearing my “Flighty” right now! It is a rare sighting in the wild.
Nice. Enjoy it!
Just got one!
Subscribed. Nice video. I got a deal for the blue one. Just about $70 used. Just wanted to see before I buy
I actually own the SND253, it's a great watch. Mark you forgot to mention that it also has a split time function!
Thank you for that!
Another point for the sna411 is the beautiful domed crystal,.,.I like the dial of the other two more and the subdial too,.,. Tough choice
I wear this when I travel to calculate average speeds and time, convert kg to lbs at the doctor, and of course figure tips and splitting checks. Plus it's a great party trick.
Perfect use!
i have this clock, it works perfectly in it the original battery was purchased in 2008 year
For the SNA411 you can also use the alarm clock to track a 2nd time zone as well.
Sure, I guess you could!
As you showed in the video, you pull the crown out half way and use the lower pusher to set the alarm. If you pull the crown out all the way, the lower pusher can be used to adjust the time on the alarm. Push the crown in and the alarm then functions as a second time zone watch.
the yellow one is on fire!
Went with the Duel Time Night Hawk instead of the Flightmaster for my aviation watch. I'm just not a big fan of chrono watches and I'd rather have a mechanical chrono, OR a high beat quartz like the Bulova High Frequency Model: 98A186.
Love the Night Hawk, it's got a freaking amazing band at it's price point. All face. And I love how at night it transforms into a completely different watch.
Can you still get the BDM25! That is a cool watch. More chronographs need twelve hour totalizers!
There's also the SSC629, 631 and a tutone version. They are a 45mm though, so I'm sure they will receive tons of hate. But they are chronos with slide rule bezels, solar powered, and part of the prospex line.
Thanks for the rec's.
The SNA411 looks nice. But the price has increased by a ton
Is it a million now?
It fluctuates alot because seiko doesnt announce when its discontinued. So new ones get rare people assume their discontinued and start buying them at auction for above retail. This is a good indication this watches value will increase. I have one I wear and am looking for one to keep mint in the box
Bought my v657-8120 in 1999 and it still works perfectly to this day.
Amazing
Is your seat getting lower or you shrinking?
I'm falling into the ground.
Video is not my specialty; selling watches is!
This is the Andrei Tarkovsky framing.
Man i wish these were available in Denmark!
I keep hearing Morty Seinfeld's voice "Its got a tip calculator"
LOL. I'll just have the soup.
@@islandwatch NO SOUP FOR YOU!
I really like my SNA411. Great watch for the $$. It works great with a lot straps, just be sure to get curved spring bars as the space between the case and spring bar is pretty tight, expecially for NATO's that have to pass through and under and back out again.
Regarding the alarm. It may defeat the purpose, but you could set that smaller alarm clock at the 6 to a 2nd time zone alternatively if maybe you find that's more important than the alarm. However, I'm not 100% certain of this and have to try, but, even if you set the alarm clock to another time zone, it may still be possible for you to use the arm feature. As I understand it, the alarm only works up to 12 hours of where the alarm clock is set. So, if your intended alarm time falls within that operational time, I think it might be possible to set the alarm and have it go off when you want it to.
For example, the current time and your main dial reads 12pm but your alarm clock is set to another time zone, say it shows 10am. Even though the main dial and alarm clock are not synced to the exact same time, I think say you want to set an alarm for 1:30pm, all you have to do is set the alarm time to 1:30, it still advances only about 3.5 hours ahead of the alarm clock time, well within 12 hours to be able to set the alarm, then when you main dial reads and hits 1:30pm, I think the alarm should sound off at the right time. You can turn off the alarm after it's gone off and hit the alarm reset (i think you hold down the lower chrono pusher when crown is out to 1st position) and it will fast forward and stop to to whatever time the alarm clock should be set to in relation to the main dial. Sounds confusing, but it really isn't. Easier shown that said or written.
Alternatively, you may simply have to compensate for the time differential so if the alarm clock is 2 hours ahead of the main dial's time, and you wanted to set the alarm say 1.5 hours ahead at 1:30pm, then on the alarm clock, you may set the time to 11:30 and that may possibly set off the alarm at the right time you actually intended it to go off.
Anyways, that's my theory on how you could use the alarm clock as a 2nd time zone as well and possibly still retain the alarm feature. Anyone who has tried and succeded, or fail, please do chime in to let us know if that's actually possible.
And, in either models and other watches such as a Breitling Navitimer that have such complicated dials and bezels for complicated calculations.. i think people needn't be hung up on the fact they will likely never use any of those features. It's just a neat looking watch and sometimes knowing what it can do even though you dont' need it is cool enough. How many of us need a +200m dive watch? Plan on imploding your lungs going down that deep? NONE, right? yet many will still buy them regardless.
Thanks, Mark. Great to know these are back in production. Wing Yip, you have said everything I was going to say about using the alarm dial as a second time zone (set it for the time zone you want and press the "B" button. That should kill the alarm). And while you mentioned the Navi. did you know that the Flighty is an "Homage" (French translation: Le Ripoff) to the Navitimer 1332412? For 3% the cost.
I love the flight master watches, and they are actually within my price reach! I particularly like the blue one. Is the dial a sunburst?
There is an all white version as well. Its very rare and I think jdm. Ive been looking for a white bezel (possibly a replacement for this model or custom) to put on my sna411 giving it a black with white bezel navitimer look. Im offering my first born child.
I really hesitated before bying a flight watch. Finally went for the Blue Angels Citizen Nighthawk. Midnight blue with the yellow details, like it more then the Flighty colours, although nice as well. But: cleaner dial and Ecodrive, and better bracelet. Gotta love them Nighthawks ;-)
The Blue Angels is an icon!
The one on the left looks the best of all three. I have quartz chrono panda dial and cant seem to keep it off my wrist.
Thanks for watching.
The pushers of the blue watch look small. Do you get sore fingers after pressing them for a while? Is there a noticeable clicking feeling when pressing them?
I had the black one.It wears too small for a pilot watch, but it's nicely done
Thanks!
Ihave this watch since 11 years , at beginning I loved it but after few years i made some scratches that erase some numbers and marks on the black watch ring , and now it become a undefinited black/metal color ring … not very nice to see .. after this experience I would prefer a ring completely black without any marks on to avoid again this problem ...
great videos, are the Snd255p1 snk809 really waterproof ? Had watches fog up from the inside. Thanks
i got the blue baby flighty because i had wanted the sna413 for a while and then i came to the realization that getting an sna413 was basically impossible so i got the more common flighty shown in the vid. also the lug width and spring bar hole placement really limit the watches strap options which is a shame
Wow, nice grab.
Nice review, might have been interested but happy enough with my Citizen Blue Angel (via you guys). Love the watch and the Navihawk except you can go crazy setting them up. Are the Seiko's as complex? Yeah, seem's much easier, only if I had known.
Seiko is easier, but the Blue Angel has a ton of functionality.
@@islandwatch Also I like the blue angle's band, no a fan of metal bands. It's a me thing, they just don't feel comfortable except for mesh.
It is a double-edged sword when TGV, Federico, The Time Teller or Mark (from Long Island Watches) inform us about some beautiful watch that is just below the public eye and at a very good price, because immediately those watches are transformed into pieces that collectors fight with their teeth.
XD XD XD
Still it is a pleasure to watch these videos and get to know these beautiful horology tools.
LOL, thank you.
Hi, I enjoy your videos :) I was just thinking that so many Seikos have nicknames. I can't think of any other company that has watch models with nicknames given by the actual users...
SND255, awesome. I'd go with the blue dial. Love the "dial animation" there really is something special about that smooth reset.
12h chronograph!! It's a little stupid haha but it helps me keep track of the laundry
Too bad the slide rule is a bit too hard to read blue/white and small font.
Other diff is SND has crown guards while SNA does not. The *totalizer* - fun word
Check out Bulava lately? They have stepped up their quarts game.
They sure have.
What happened to the screw down crown and chrono buttons?
Marc, you and TGV need to do a video together sometime. I'd watch the heck out of that.
One day.
From my own experience-- luxury preowned chronographs are something to avoid like the plague. Get one of these instead.
Nice endorsement, thank you.
If I had to actually use a chronometer for something, I'd use my Timex Ironman.
how do you tell when the watch was made? i am a bit confused with these numbers...
I was going to buy one of these but then I came up to Seiko SNAB67 and SNAB71. Which are another Seiko flightmasters but without that rather ugly bezel. In these there are inner rotating slide ruler and all covered with crystal so ruler wont scratch. I like SNAB71 more because white face but it come with leather strap so I am looking for similar version with metal bracelet.
Hi Mark, I am a big fan of your videos and I save them on my favorites for reference. I have a question for you. I bought my Flighty in Dec.2007 and the serial # is 750334. The Flighty that you are showing in this video has a serial # 870467. You state that the first number is the year and the second number is the month. on that premise, 8 represents the year 2018. Then mine would have to be 2017, since my serial # starts with a 7. I'm confused????????????? I know for a fact that I bought the watch in Dec. 2007. Please explain. It is driving me nuts.
will you ever have the SNA413?
Props on leaving the made in China sticker on. Respect.
:)
The sooner ppl start to realise that the Chinese make some good products the better
Hi, have you ever heard about Seiko ssc009p1 a chronograph solar powered quartz, looks similar to SNA411 with different power source. would you please make a review of that watch, I'd love to buy one but I need some good indepth review before I decided to buy one. Thank you
11:48, where does it state the date of manufacture?
Does it use much more battery power when you run the chronograph for extended periods of time?
Scott Miller I’m late reply but at least on my 7T32 Seiko, the chrono stops running after maybe ~6 hours as a way to save battery. Not sure if the 7T62 does the same but I would not be surprised.
Hey guys, does anyone know where I can find sapphire Crystal for these watches?
Hmmm I'd go for Casio Edifice...
That's ok!
My sna411 has a “p” sticker on the case back... what does that stand for?
I believe it means that the watch was assembled in the Phillipines.
I want the SNA411 since almost a year! It is my holy grail (seriously). I wish I could find one. Would buy it immediately! EDIT: ok, sale price at Long Island Watch = YEAH!!!!
Yippie! Rejoice!
Of course you start with the bbblue one lol
Is there any other way?
With solar powered movement, I would pull the trigger.
That would be cool.
Does citizen have a similar model with eco drive?
Thanks Mark. What is the battery life?
Couple of years.
Please make a review of seiko ssb031
Thanks; will consider it.
Amazing watches but I will never own one because I don't have the requisite doctorate in horology to understand how these operate.
LOL, we have a watch and learn for that :)
what about the sna413 and 414?
The 413 I never see; the 414 I do see from time to time.
What the p stands for ?
Is the SND253 / 255 made in Japan?
Mark wearing the same two watches!!! okay people stop the news!!!
Yeah; when it works, it works!
SNA411 all the way!! The others are just trying to be the SNA411.
Not for me and I’ve been addicted to Seiko for decades.
Thanks for watching.
That "Made in China" sticker on the back of the SNA411 killed the entire thing for me. I have a preference for mechanicals, but was warming up to this look when I saw that horrible sticker. Seiko fail. Good review though Marc!
I'll say this; if everything that was Made in China had that sticker on it, you wouldn't be a happy camper.
Why doesn’t Seiko make automatic/Mechanical chronograph?
They do; the NE88 movement, they just do not use it often; more often it's found in other brand's watches.
