JK Rowling's Original Harry Potter Draft REVEALED - Harry Potter Explained

  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, I wanted to share something very special with you guys which pertains to the existence of the Harry Potter world as a whole. I am of course talking about the ORIGINAL synopsis written by JK Rowling for the Harry Potter book- a huge piece of Potter history. This was the same synopsis that JK Rowling submitted to Bloomsbury publishing before the book was ever known- this was the synopsis that helped Bloomsbury publishing to understand why this is something that they should publish. THIS synopsis eventually persuaded Bloomsbury to offer Rowling her first contract- and I think that it’s interesting to see the ‘roots’ of Harry Potter- and what caused it to become the huge franchise that it is. The first Harry Potter book - The Philosopher’s Stone - was published in 1997, and this synopsis dates back to 1995- meaning this predated the definitive existence of the magical world by 2 years. There were a full 2 years, and probably even more, when Harry Potter existed- the world just didn’t know it yet. All it was at that time, was a crumpled piece of paper with folded corners and tea stains. It’s also worth mentioning that ORIGINAL original synopsis, i.e the original paper is actually on display at the History of Magic exhibit.
Without further ado, let’s begin to take a look at the original Harry Potter synopsis:
“Harry Potter lives with his aunt, uncle and cousin because his parents died in a car-crash - or so he has been told. The Dursleys don’t like Harry asking questions; in fact, they don’t seem to like anything about him, especially the very odd things that keep happening around him (which Harry himself can’t explain).
The Dursleys’ greatest fear is that Harry will discover the truth about himself, so when letters start arriving for him near his eleventh birthday, he isn’t allowed to read them. However, the Dursleys aren’t dealing with an ordinary postman, and at midnight on Harry’s birthday the gigantic Rubeus Hagrid breaks down the door to make sure Harry gets to read his post at last. Ignoring the horrified Dursleys, Hagrid informs Harry that he is a wizard, and the letter he gives Harry explains that he is expected at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in a month’s time.”
This was a great way to open things up- because in just a few short lines it introduces a bit of mystery and a bit of magic. How did his parents actually die? What are the odd things that keep happening around him? Why do the Dursleys hate him so much? What do they mean not an ordinary postman? What is..Hogwarts?
To the Dursleys’ fury, Hagrid also reveals the truth about Harry’s past. Harry did not receive the scar on his forehead in a car-crash; it is really the mark of the great dark sorcerer Voldemort, who killed Harry’s mother and father but mysteriously couldn’t kill him, even though he was a baby at the time. Harry is famous among the witches and wizards who live in secret all over the country because Harry’s miraculous survival marked Voldemort’s downfall.
So Harry, who has never had friends or family worth the name, sets off for a new life in the wizarding world. He takes a trip to London with Hagrid to buy his Hogwarts equipment (robes, wand, cauldron, beginners’ draft and potion kit) and shortly afterwards, sets off for Hogwarts from Kings Cross Station (platform nine and three quarters) to follow in his parents’ footsteps.
This is where things get juicy. A dark sorcerer? FAME? A new Life? What’s a platform Nine and ¾? You’ve got my attention.

    Thank you HP Theory.
It's not only 8 and 9 years olds that love the world of Harry Potter and Hogwarts. I was 17 years old when I first read The Philosopher's Stone in 2001. I have now read all of the books and movies (and every other book/movie about HP and FB) several times each and they are, and always will be, my favourite.

I was 7 when I was introduced to the Philosopher's Stone movie in 2001. At age 10 I was pulling Harry Potter PC games out of the library at any given opportunity. I ended up reading them in stages. Books 1-3, then 4 and 5, then the 6th on audio book a while later and finished the 7th book when I was 17, also on audio book.
      .
When I reached the Deathly Hallows book, I was 14. I didn't finish it until I was 17, however. I was too young and just couldn't appreciate it before that. The themes were a tad too adult for me at the time and it was a little too intimidating.
I may be 27 now but I still enjoy it. Even if my opinion on a few of the characters have drastically changed over the years. 😄

I became a fan by accident. At the time the first movie came out I was in my mid 20s. I was living in Alberta with my brother and his family. When I was on my days off work I would take my niece to see a movie and let her pick the movie within reason (she was 10 at the time). Her movie choice on this occasion was not age appropriate. I scanned the marquee and saw Harry Potter & the Philosopher's stone and suggested it to her. I knew it was popular with kids from some stuff I had seen on TV and from the trailer I knew it was a about witches, wizards and magic. My niece begrudgingly agreed and she enjoyed it as did I but I can't say that I was hooked at that point.
As luck should have it I was back in my own home province visiting my sister when Chamber of Secrets came out. I took her daughter, my other niece to that movie. After it was over and we were leaving the theatre I thought to myself "I guess I'm going to have go see the other movies when they come out".
There was a longer than usual gap between Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix so after watching Order I thought about buy the books simply because I couldn't wait that long for the next movie. As luck should have it I was in Walmart in the magazine section which is also where the book are as well and I found a set of Harry Potter books for adult readers. I bought them (except for Deathly Hallows which wasn't out yet). I bought Deathly Hallows after it was released, just a regular edition of the book. I wasn't about to wait for the adult reader edition to come out.
I bought a Blu-ray boxset of the movies after they were released and recently, because my copy of order of the Phoenix is starting to fall apart, I preordered a boxset of hardback special edition Harry Potter books in Slytherin green & silver.

The thrill lasted till the last movie was released, but faded away with HP and the Cursed Child.

J K Rowling said, that she intended to write with "Harry Potter" a book, that both children and adults enjoy to read. While children are simply fascinated by this fantasy world, adults find meanings behind the story and the words it is written from and accounts, children do not see. So you can discover new things every time you reread the series as you grow older.

While this synopsis is enjoyable to read on it's own, it has a glaring flaw which might explain why Rowling had difficulty finding an agent. A query letter synopsis for a book should contain the full story beginning to end. It is not supposed to be a teaser to hook the reader, it should lay out the full plot. Agents are very busy people who receive multiple manuscripts every single day, they don't have time to go through countless pages just to see if the last part is any good. This omitting of the ending is a common pitfall that agents warn against because it often puts you straight in the 'hasn't done their homework' pile (a.k.a the trashcan).

@@denizkenger52 Because it was accidental and the ritual wasn't done correctly in the slightest, I agree. I do not believe that Harry was a true horcrux, he just had a fragment of soul that didn't belong to him that could die in his place when push came to shove.

    • @helenetrstrup4817
      @helenetrstrup4817 Před 3 lety +4

@@denizkenger52 Sure. I have read the book. We all know what happened in Godric's Hollow on Halloween in 1981. Voldemort tried to kill Harry, his soul was split as the curse supposedly rebounded, well at least that is Dumbledore's explanation. One part latched on to Harry, the other part fled and went into hiding to regain its strength unaware of being split. So in that sense yes, the ritual wasn't done at all. Since Voldemort didn't know Harry had a part of his soul, it is likely that he didn't plan to create another one in Godric's Hollow and thus the ritual wasn't done, but the soul was still split.
This soul fragment would have to have been put into an object via a spell/ritual after the murder had been comitted - to my knowledge at least. This spell/ritual was obviously not performed, thus a true horcrux was not created. 😄
And clearly, Harry is good at getting hurt, even without involving basilisks. You could drop a nuke on a horcrux without leaving a scratch on it. Even Nagini was fine being bombarded by spells and only died when Neville cut her head off with the Sword of Gryffindor imbued with Basilisk venom.
When coming to a conclusion it's just as much what isn't said. *A lot* is left up to interpretation and that is one thing I really love about the Harry Potter universe.

Definetely Palpatine as he does have the backing of a Galactical Army, and a lot more resources... But face to face, I think Voldemort, a Wizard, can just do more things than Palpatine, a Sith

I have some requests i.e. pls make videos on the topic-Sorting Barty Crouch Jnr in Hogwarts House, The Story of Aurelius Dumbledore, what if Voldemort knew that he has a daughter, he would have taken care of her as she is the next Slytherin descendant or he would have killed her? and The relation between Leta Lestrange and Bellatrix Lestrange. Please it's my humble request to you. Please I have been requesting this all for so long now. Pls at least reply...

the Casual Vacancy was the dreaded 2nd novel of an author, considering the whole HP serie as one novel.
and it was a stinker, the only person a reader could relate to dies in the first chapter .
She however came back splendid under the pseudonime Robert Galbraith with the detective serie Cormoran Strike in 2013 four books now last in 2018.
