dropped the link for the text guide on the shulk video - it's also here in enel's descriptions. go check it out if you have the time and give some feedback if you're able, i would hugely appreciate it! thanks
agree with everything in the intro - everyone be sleeping on reyn for 10 years, he's super super good. makes healing unnecessary with debuffs and tanking in the midgame and still deals a ton of damage, and then just straight up erases the existence of any enemy in the endgame with massive burst.
it doesn't come up very often but hammer beat does have an aoe radius - a small circle around the target enemy. it's typically not going to hit more than one enemy unless they're bunched up really close, but it does pop up occasionally.
mad taunt and aggro in general has some interesting math around it - here's a thinned down version of it. let's say each point of damage you deal gives you a point of aggro. one point of healing then gives you 2.5 points of aggro. one point of damage that's been dealt to you by the enemy takes off 4 points of aggro. there's an additional thing on top of that though called volatile aggro. put simply youget extra volatile aggro from arts that dissipates at a rate of 120 points per second and is calculated from, approximately speaking, that art's volatile aggro parameter times (character level + 14). mad taunt has a unique brand of aggro all by itself. it generates aggro equal to reyn's level times 120 + 1880 and dissipates at a rate of 1/30 of its original amount per second until it's completely gone. engage makes mad taunt generate 25% more aggro and berserker gives it an aoe radius (along with his auto attacks). but basically all this is completely irrelevant, all that's important is it usually grabs the enemy's attention so feel free to use it frequently, you get it back very quickly anyway.
bone upper might not have amazing damage compared to his other arts, but it's cooldown is ridiculously short, so much so that you're probably going to be using it as much as you auto attack, so its damage adds up pretty quickly despite having a low arts multiplier. the agility down it gives with dive sobat is also, like you mentioned, great, especially against higher leveled enemies.
rage isn't great normally and berserker is almost always gonna be the better choice - with one situational exception. you can cheese despotic arsene by stacking as much phys def on reyn as possible (as close to 1800 as you can manage) via equips, gems, and skills, use rage and guard, and then sit for about 15 minutes refreshing guard as arsene does 1 damage to him per attack and takes spike damage in return. it also has some uses in super underleveled fights but that's not really worth going into much since it'll never actually matter in a normal playthrough. bottom line is - berserker is usually just better, but it does have that one use.
berserker and other auras that give you debuffs in return for buffs have their downsides negated with a debuff resist gem, which is another reason on top of many to run them. with it, it's basically a free massive strength boost that lasts the entire battle.
    neg·li·gi·ble
    /ˈneɡləjəb(ə)l/
    neh-gluh-juh-bul
if you're running an attack heal build with critical drain and arts heal, then enthusiasm is probably your best bet - you can get up to 59% crit rate, 89% effective with max tension which will proc crit drain basically all the time, giving you about 300 health per hit with recovery up plus the healing from arts heal.
haste isn't as important on reyn as it is for the other 3 physical attackers since you're going to have pretty little downtime for auto attacks because you're arts spamming so often. the same thing is true for double attack. that said they aren't totally useless and are totally viable gems if you have a free slot on your armor for the glory gauntlets.
that solo topple lock just looks super boring to actually do lmfao
berserker doesn't actually give an aoe strength down like peerless does. at least, that's how it works in og, i'm pretty sure they didn't change it for de but i might be incorrect?
    >says he one shots gonzales
    >he's still alive afterwards
    lame
the superbosses in the challenges were huuuugely nerfed. they have like barely more than 10% of their max hp and do significantly less damage. kinda lame tbh but what can you do i guess
anyway thanks so much enel! these videos are great as always and i'm excited to see the rest of the characters.

One thing about Last Stand - it's great to put on AI Reyn, not because he uses it intelligently or anything, but because you can *make* him use it and save his life basically for free. Whenever you get a vision of him getting merc'd, as long as you have the gage for it, you can just walk up to him and have him use this. Not only will it save his life with most of his HP, but it'll also refund most of the gage you spent to make him use it!

    • @streamofthesky
      @streamofthesky Před 4 lety +21

Yeah, I don't usually bother warning party members of visions, but Reyn is a major exception. The aura is basically a cure-all for whatever the deadly attack would do since he momentarily drops and thus has status effects cleared, AND you get your talent gauge back! The annoying part is when Sharla ruins my plans by healing/shielding him immediately afterwards, enough to survive the attack and make the aura not trigger. Damn it, Sharla!

Serious Striker the only difference with sharla is that you can spam thunder valley and headshot and make her a constant dps machine. You just have to put on riki’s reduce cooldown skill. You activate drive boost and use thunder bullet then headshot and switch between the two. If you have heat sink gems you can spam for a while. This makes me think she outclasses Riki now.

Something I just noticed that's kinda funny is that between Xenoblades 1 and 2, the party member introduced as the face tank (Reyn and Tora) ends up being the best party member in the game. *As an attacker.*
Edit: Off topic, but in contrast, the party member introduced as the healer also ends up being the worst party member. Go figure. Though comparing with their respective parties, Nia being the worst isn't as bad as Sharla being the worst.

  • @d3-ll754
    @d3-ll754 Před 4 lety +15

I would like to mention that Reyn is far and away the most useful Party Member during an underleveled run, where it's not as simple as "whack 'em 'til he dies". Lategame when Agility Up and Night Vision Gems are aplenty you can certainly do this, but early- to mid-game he still proves useful with his Aggro gaining from Mad Taunt, Hammer Beat, and Aura Burst (the latter's Strength Down proving about as equally useful). And since you're more at risk of death while underleveled, Last Stand is a great way of saving yourself, as is Guard Shift when timed correctly. Rage shows situational use, particularly during a couple of fights in Eryth Sea where in one the enemies are too strong and too plentiful to safely take out the normal way and the second where Shulk proves to be useless against one of the enemies (Dunban will prove useless against the other, and Melia's just too frail to survive more than two hits against either)--these two fights it's best to stack Spike and Ether Up alongside Rage and just let the enemies Spike themselves to death (far and away my two least favorite fights in the game but sadly no better ways of going about them).
Lastly, though it almost goes without saying, being able to take hits is just so valuable when you're struggling to get ahold of actually good Gems in the first half (Agility Up and Night Vision Gems will be too low-leveled to provide any decent effect unless you stack multiple of them at once, which more often than not you are doing and STILL needing a little help).
So TL;DR, Reyn's DPS isn't his only selling point. His more tank-oriented Arts prove just as useful when you're running through underleveled.

Reyn is one of the characters that spikes (not the effect, I mean the chart spike) with gems and art levels, he is generally ok for most of the games, but to make him amazing as this one needs lv VI gems and max his arts, as you mentioned it, his arts have a long cooldown otherwise and his gem set up isnt as obvious as the others until that can come true, since you want Dunban and Shulk hogging the best Agility Up gems up to that point and he has great damage even early its not as obvious that he needs strength to keep up the damage as the others, and its allways at the mid game where one changes Reyn from tank to dps
another thing I would like is Talent art moddifiers, like giving some the ability change their Talent Art, or ins some cases *cough* Sharla *cough* have it evolve with a side quest, in Reyn I would love if he could have 2 Talent Arts, Mad Taunt and Magnum Charge, yes that would make Magnum Charge more redily aviable but let be honest, once you get Magnum Charge you dont want Mad Taunt, and you can change it so that Magnum Charge as a Talent Art is one of the slowest Talent Arts to be filled, Ill talk about the idea I have for Sharla on Sharlas video

I had no idea the "come to me" command actually makes the other two members stop engaging the enemy completely. I always assumed they would start attacking again after a few seconds because that's what I always do when I use that command for positioning because I always engage not long after using that command. Good to know it can be used to interrupt the AI party members and make them stop indefinitely

  • @papaG6423

What I love about XC1 over XC2 is that each character can do a lot simply on their own due to the many driver arts available at once, and Reyn is one of the best examples of that. He can topple and daze on his own, give himself great attack buffs, inflict paralysis/reduce enemy agility, hit multiple enemies at once, and more. This variety and character independence also carries over to the likes of Shulk, Melia, and Dunban, making them all really fun characters to play. However, until the late game where you can get some OP gems, I never feel like my teammates are useless either. Meanwhile in XC2, due to the blade switching cool downs and limited number of arts per character, I feel like I'm at the mercy of the AI very often to do cool setups. Don't get me wrong, I love XC2 to death, but XC1 really hits different for me with its simple yet deep combat system.

Fun fact: The song that plays at the end of future connected when you are fighting the final boss is called 'The Conduit's Demise'. Perhaps the fog beasts are from the conduit but that doesn't really make too much sense since the conduit should be destroyed or at least powerless by this point. Anyways I thought it was interesting and just wanted to share this with people.

Discussing Reyn throughout the game (not just Endgame):
    __
+Focus on leveling up Bone Upper first, since it's cool down is super short and it's animation is super fast, which means the damage increase with each level heavily increases Reyn's overall damage output. It's DPS (damage when factoring in cooldown and animation speed) quickly becomes way higher than Sword Drive. This art also recharges your Talent Art gauge extremely fast, meaning you never need to auto attack.
+Dive Sobat is amazing against all enemies and essential against higher level enemies if you manage to hit it. You may want to equip some agility gems (if you haven't already) to make sure you do.
Berserker is Reyn's best Aura, which greatly increases his damage so he can more easily hold aggro.
+Wild Down is pretty great. It's nice to level it up a bit more once the 4th party member joins you, since he can inflict Break and Topple too. It's cooldown is pretty low for a topple art.
+Shield Bash's cooldown becomes insanely short if you level it up, so I definitely recommend leveling it up as soon as you get it. Because of it's low cooldown, it's even worth having against enemies that are immune to Topple.
+Lariat is a strong art that hits multiple enemies and fills the Talent Gauge with each enemy hit. I prefer it over War Swing, since the cooldown is lower and the damage is higher.
+Sword Drive is a great art, but there's little reason to level it up in the first half of the game, since the damage increase is minor and the cooldown remains so high that you probably almost never use it twice per fight anyway. The damage increase becomes more relevant once you get Magnum Charge at a decent level.
+Magnum Charge is great late game after you've leveled it up. It's not worth equiping until you've reached about x2.7 though, since having another (slightly stronger) sword drive in terms of damage is only useful against a very small range of enemies. This is because Sword Drive is mostly useful for one shotting weak enemies and using it in chain attacks. Magnum Charge usually won't help with either.
    ___
    Other notable arts:
-Hammer Beat really helps Reyn to draw aggro in the early and midgame. I recommend replacing it with Magnum Charge at some point though, since you don't need it in Late Game, because Reyn's damage output is high enough by then to keep the aggro on him.
-Guard Shift is an art I recommend unequipping, unless you play as Reyn, since it will lower Reyn's damage output, which makes it harder for him to hold aggro.
-Aura Burst is fine art that increases Reyn's survivability. It's great in the early and mid game, when that can be a problem. I recommend replacing it once you get better arts though.
-War Swing: It's nice when multiple enemies, since it damages all of them and builds the talent gauge instantly. Its damage is pretty low though and it's cooldown is extremely long, so I wouldn't recommend leveling it much. Replace it once you get better arts.

Your videos are great, and they remind me about tf2, specifically MvM mode. That game mode and Xenoblade share the fact that you have these huge monsters (in tf2 case, robots), and the focus is not to stay alive for the entirety of the fight, but to do as much damage as possible and to not get hit

And for the other people, most casual smash bros players don’t pay enough attention to the game and Xenoblade content in order to get spoiled by it, since Definitive edition hopefully brings in some new players who never paid much attention to it before. And the game is so old that most casuals would have had relatively little exposure to it, so, I think you’d be surprised by the amount of people going into it unspoiled

I just want to say, this is fantastic and exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping to see with DE. I don't think anyone would've called Reyn the greatest character in the original, but with stuff like Time Attack and the faster cooldowns at Rank XII, he has much more room to shine.
