Picture discs are actually one puck of pvc sandwiched between two pieces of paper and finished with two pieces of plastic foil. The grooves are actually pressed on the plastic foil. So sound quality is (by design) of a lesser quality.

I’ve played every picture disc I ever owned! As a kid, I had two: Rod Stewart “Blondes Have More Fun” and the original double album version of Barry Manilow’s “Greatest Hits”.
Three, now that I think of it: Elvis Presley “A Legendary Performer” either Volume 2 or 3.
And if you think finding a track on a picture disc is difficult, try doing that with the coke bottle clear Walmart exclusive pressing of Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Band’s “Greatest Hits” album!

I must admit that most of my picture discs are from the 70's, and the only one I recall playing on a regular basis was the soundtrack for 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', because it was the only version I own. It has always had tons of surface noise (unlike the records you played), but was still lots of fun listening to the 'Time Warp' while watching Tim Curry spin.
I love the Vogue picture discs. A local record store always had them displayed on their wall. I wish I could have afforded a few.
Picture disc MYTHS belong in the same category as 'true' Audiophile fanatics' MYTHS about AIO's and suitcase style record players vs. turntables. To each their own, I say, and the sound is in the ears of the beholder. And Record-ology has the balls to state the truth over and over again: if it wasn't for Crosleys, Victrolas, Jensens, Aiwas and others, the LP popularity resurgence would likely never have happened.
Btw thank you for doing this one. I collect mostly colored and picture disc press. In spite of a half dozen or so recent defective press Disney remains my favorite. No where near complete but there is just so much it would be impossible for a person not of great means to keep up. They constantly have exciting and beautiful new inventory. And the more you grab up, you may land an odd piece that retires quickly and becomes quite a nice rarity. A lot of what they do is limited to Infinity and beyond but... for example I recently managed to get ahold of a Big Hero Six 7 inch picture disc that is pretty rare.

My picture discs I play on my record player have a buzzing sound during playback that’s not in my regular vinyls so it depends on the record player too and besides the buzzing noise if I just ignore that the sound still sounds good. I got a rare picture disc of Katy Perry’s album Prism today and it was high priced only 5000 copies of that version were pressed
my biggest issue with most of the modern disney picture disc pressings are the plastic sleeves they are typically packaged in. I wish they came in something better - full bleed sleeves.
i have collected Picture discs since the first UK single by The Cars in 1978. There are two very different manufacturing processes for them. The "clear rim" is as you say a picture suspended and pressed in between two pucks of clear vinyl, normally the A side of these sounds amazing, as the weight of the paper "label" makes it sink closer to the B side, but in general, they sound better than "black rim" picture discs. I have both versions of Blondie "Parallel Lines" and the clear rim sounds much better than the black rim version, but is warped! However, there is a problem with many of them being slightly "bowl-shaped", and the failure rate due to the picture tearing as the record was pressed is why this way of making them has become virtually obsolete, due to the process. Black rim versions are a 12inch label on each side of a puck of vinyl and at first has no music pressed onto them, once the "blank" is made, a thin clear "heat adhesive" vinyl "foil" is pulled across the blank from a roll, and the grooves are pressed into this, so the playing surface is very thin, which is why you get the rumble of the paper picture underneath. Of course, there are pic discs pressed this way with other coloured vinyl rims. The Disney discs do seem to be made to a very high standard and sound pretty good, especially Frozen which was mastered at 45rpm. However, a heavy tonearm will damage the groove walls on a pic disc very quickly.

I only have a Green Day picture record, has a little bit of surface noise but sounds really good! I guess if you have a decent turntable, these can sound good.

I have an off topic question. In the old cars with the old analog radio when you preset a station on the radio what inside that radio remembers the needle to go back to that setting when you push the button? How dose that work?
I don't mind picture discs being available but I wish they would release some albums on something other than picture discs. My main issue with picture discs is that I don't like how they actually look playing on a record player. I have no issue with colored vinyl as a lot of it actually looks cool when spinning but I don't think picture discs ever look good actually spinning on a record. I would buy picture discs to display the art but I would rather they also release a regular or colored version alongside the picture disc.
My Purple Rain picture discs is one of my favorite records that I own!
I only own one picture disc which is a Japanese City Pop single. And now knowing that Disney Records finally have cardboard inserts instead of crappy tpu covers for their picture discs does make me want to get that Monsters Inc ost.

By the way that rainbow bright It's not a Disney property but I believe was under license to Disney for the purpose of producing that picture desk so if you have the sleeve check the sleeve out it may actually have something remarking either Disney or Buena Vista on it. I understand compared to some of the other Disney pictures disks it's actually pretty hard to come by. Very nice piece.
Picture discs are amazing, there is surface noise on some but it’s not the worst thing. But you gotta expect that since it’s more stuff pressed on the disc. I have Madonna self titled, it’s not the best but I also have chromatica by lady gaga and the disc sounds amazing. So it depends on the way they cut the album.
They also press picture discs with clear underneath, you see it with some new pressings, like the star wars ones!
Sorry, picture discs just don't sound good, it's still just a marketing thing, they look good on a wall thats it imo
Hi there I do have Picture disc, it is Michael Jackson Invisible 2LP I got good copy and I have questions And I want be honest I know some people don’t like music with bad word on it but music is my favorite thing and vinyl too Btw Heard you hear Flying Lotus, he’s a grandnephew of John Coltrane wife Known as Alice Coltrane, Flying Lotus is Electronic, Hip-hop and jazz fusion. My favorite album from him is Youre Dead and Cosmogramma

Love the Disney records. I enjoy the films and soundtracks from their 1970s live action and animated output. I'll have to check out picture discs as I do not own any.
Love picture discs- my favourites are Tubular Bells ( Mike Oldfield), Breakfast In America ( Supertramp) and Kylie ( forgot which album). Have to confess I have not played them. Good subject to cover.

Before I begin the video, I must say that everything that I know about picture discs is right. Now I will watch the video and see how we compare... OK, modern picture discs are made in a completely different way from those made in the 1980's or before. Those usually sound snap, crackle & poppy because of the vinyl that they used. It has nothing to do with the grooves. Every older picture disc I own sounds fine except for the record noise. But most of what you said is true. And yes, modern picture discs sound fine and should be played like any other record. Older ones are usually noisey but fine. So yes, plat them! Take care...
Jack White is working on new picture disc technology that will have audiophile sound. I have an acquaintance that owns a pressing plant. He said that one side of picture discs are the same as a normal record. The other side does have shallower grooves. Now he has also told me that the 180 gram record weight is a sales gimmick.

I have no picture discs, though I have coloured vinyl. Hubby Rich has several Iron Maiden picture discs. They are not played though. They sound muffled compared to the black vinyl versions he has. Maybe they're made slightly differently.
I'm just now getting into record collecting, and I have a picture disc of "Freak Show" by The Residents coming that I fully intend to spin the minute it arrives, haha. It's semi-worrying since it's a minor rarity, but the way I see it, I'm buying music that doubles as wall art, not wall art that doubles as music.
I have both picture and normal and I'm guessing its the factory that make them as in one case I have a picture disc that is clearer then normal but another is not as clear.
The only picture disc I've ever bought/owned is a 2020 30th Anniversary re-issue of They Might Be Giant's "Flood". To be honest it sounds very good.... In fact too good the bass is so low on some songs I now have to upgrade from my 1985 Panasonic AIO system's ceramic cartridge turntable to a magnetic cartridge based turntable (either a Audio-Technica AT-LP60X or a Pioneer PL-990).
Encanto seems a return to some normalcy. I loved the old disney pic discs and the new disney line from 2015 or so through 2019... then... Disney in general... Tarzan pic disc, Incredible pic disc, Avengers Infinity War pic disc, Translucent yellow Lion King remake, white Aladdin remake all had vinyl fill skip issues. Not the fault in pic discs in general but I think for a brief period they lapsed on quality control. The sorcerer mickey shape and others I've gotten were great. In total I have around 75 to 80 disney pic lp and colored vinyl issues ranging from a 1958 greeting card record and a couple of Little Golden 6 inch to present.

Surely the groove doesn't have to be shallower. Just use slightly thicker vinyl to compensate for the paper. Old records used to be substantially thicker.

I never had a problem with any of my picture discs. With today’s technology, however, wouldn’t it be possible to put two half biscuits of clear vinyl around the paper material to make the discs instead of a sound sheet on either side? Peace.
I do have a picture disc of Cyndi Lauper’s “She’s so unusual”. It does sound less than stellar.

I don’t have any picture discs in my collection, in fact my collection is mostly black records, apart from 2, a 7 inch blue record, and a 12 inch green record
I have a few at this point and most of the newer ones range from pretty good to decent except for the worst sounding newer one I have which is a Disney one that spent a large amount of time stored in a PVC sleeve so I suspect that is causing a lot of the quality issues people see with some of the earlier modern runs. That disc basically sounds as bad as the vintage 1980s ones that I have, some of which did get turned into display pieces but in my defense I have the tracks on from those on other releases and the art would otherwise be hidden in my shelves. I really should compare my picture disc and colored vinyl copies of the Bojack Horseman soundtrack sometime.
Related, really wish the Hunchback soundtrack was included in that recent colored vinyl run I saw Disney doing.
Side note for you on modern vs old and clear vs black edge. A lot of this also has to do with where it was produced. A lot of 80s pic discs are black edge. All pressed by PiC are. Many aren't. 80s Disney Pic discs sold in stores (and Peter Pan and Kid Stuff) have the die cut style sleeve and are all clear edge. Same with Linda Ronstadt Living in the USA and Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. On the other hand Meat Loaf Bat Out of Hell, Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, Boston and a slew of other PiC titles in same type of sleeve are black edged. Disney parks exclusive discs from the 70s and 80s are PiC and black edge with one exclusion... some variant copies of the Electric Light Parade 7 inch were clear edge. There are at least 6 variants of this record. I'm pretty sure the clear edge copies were at end of the cycle of pressings and were likely done at Rainbo.
Another interesting tidbit... when Elvis died Moody Blue had just been switched from blue to black vinyl, but reverted back to blue for duration of the run in tribute. It is rumored that too many were pressed. Rather than take a total loss when the Legendary performer vol 3 pic disc was released excess vinyl from the Moody Blue press was used to create the typically black base disc. This is why the edge of the vol 3 pic disc exactly matches many pressings of Moody Blue. This is unconfirmed. Some of the blue also went to Tomitas Bermuda Triangle though it is more common to find those in coral and promo eps in turquoise.
Anyway... the black vs clear edge thing isn't neccesarily a tell all on age. There are also some victor pic disc 78s from the late 30s and early 40s with a black edge and a French 3 disc Cinderella 78 from 1950 with black edges. A link is below. Worth just enjoying photos of. It is really a stunning album.

I’ve never heard that you should never play a picture disc. One side of a picture disc is similar to a normal record. The other side does have shallower grooves because of the picture. Jack White is currently working on new picture disc technology that will have audiophile sound.
Hi I just subbed I 62 years age its crazy return of vynil but great I never really bought picture discs when I was younger don't know why I did buy British band squeeze up the junction in purple 45 inch vynil excuse spell but this year I return too turntables so impressed with guardian of galaxy music got disc 1/2 in picture disc thank you look forward too seeing your stuff good video
I don't have many picture discs, but the ones I do have include:
- 'The Story of Star Wars'
- 'The Story of Return of the Jedi'
- A very limited edition of the 'Star Wars' soundtrack by John Williams with images of the Death Star on the disc
- 'Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace' soundtrack by John Williams on two records with unique artwork on all four sides.
- 'E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial' soundtrack by John Williams
- 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' soundtrack by Danny Elfman on two picture discs with different artwork on each side
- Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty' soundtrack
- 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' soundtrack with Boris Karloff narrating.
- 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' 12-inch LP by Bauhaus and the images of Bela Lugosi also glow in the dark. :)

I have the original Elektra issue of They Might Be Giants - Flood and the Zoetrope picture disk reissue. I’m sure it’s because it’s a reissue but it sounds worse than the original.
I have an example of a record that shows why picture vinyl has a bad reputation. Pretty much every copy of the Prince Purple Rain 180g picture vinyl reissue (according to Amazon reviews), including mine, has trouble playing the beginning of side 2. The needle doesn’t make it to the song (when doves cry) it just makes a popping noise 33 1/3 times every minute! No cheap Crosley Cruiser “turntable” here, this is an AT-LP60! Looking closely at my copy, it appears that there are grooves crossing each other in that area! If you start it 5 seconds into “when doves cry” it skips once but plays fine other than that. Also, much like many 180g reissues, the center hole is slightly off center, resulting in some very slight “wow” in the sound on side 1. It also sounds dirty (pops, crackles) like an old used record. Not sure about other picture vinyl records, but I wouldn’t recommend that one in particular.

As far as I know, the *real* reason people don't recommend playing picture discs is because they aren't really vinyl. Yes, there is a vinyl disc but it is not what's being played. Instead, the grooves are pressed into two thin layers of film which will wear out faster than vinyl.

Records have cuts, not tracks. Tracks are a digital term and not to be used for analog records.

I have 2 picture discs and they both sound bad. TOOL lateralus picture disc... has SOME surface noise. And Boston sound like trash...
I have a picture disc of the Lion King soundtrack. I've lost count of how many times I've played it. And, to my (somewhat un-trained) ears, it sounds nearly as good as regular, every day black vinyl.
