Haha, I think falling in love with a student is okay, it would be romantically or sexually pursuing your student or accepting advances that would be the biggest mistake. Like "falling in love" is just an amalgamation of admiration and attraction which do not have to even be acted on or given a second glance. Realistically what this man had was a crush and that's something he can easily get over by searching for someone his own age with similar traits that he sees in her.
Although I love this movie, Josie and Sam's entire relationship is a little creepy to watch now. He thought that she was a teenager the whole time. At one point, he even compliments Josie, then points out "I shouldn't be saying that BECAUSE I'm your teacher."
I think him saying he shouldn't be saying this because he's her teacher is worse than what he actually said. There is nothing wrong with what he said to her, all he did was say that boys her age were in mature and when they get older they would appreciate someone like her. But him saying he shouldn't be saying that hints at him feeling guilty for having a crush on his student.
