By removing the social stigma around consumerism and individualism, we have created a world where it makes no sense for either men or women to get married unless they meet someone really attractive. But since attractive people are too busy either having fun or working to make a living, their genes will slowly disappear from the gene pool so increasingly there will be a larger percentage of the population that won’t be able to attract anyone.
From a pure rational and economic point of view, it’s far cheaper to import skilled young professionals from poorer countries than to invest resources training them up locally from a young age. The reason why people still got married at all in the last 100 years, is because of religious belief and nationalism that are hold overs from the age of ‘king and country’. That kind of thinking is incompatible with the idea of liberty and democracy, and will inevitably die out if we’re determined to pursue the latter. In fact if there comes a time when AI can replace human workers in absolutely all industries, then human bodies, being fragile and prone to irreparable damages, will also have no place in the economy. Then we’ll probably see humans go extinct altogether. Maybe that’s how humans collectively escape samsara.
