- I do not encourage anyone to enter culverts, unclog anything, or enter flooded areas as it can easily become deadly without the proper training
I unclog drains for fun in my spare time (I have been trained in culvert inspections for years with private co.) and I am osha trained.
Exploring anything abandoned can be dangerous or deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any abandoned structures. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal, and when possible I seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and I leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks and responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. There could be nails, asbestos, falling concrete, soft floors, animals, or other hazards. My dad was stationed at this very air base from 1956 to 1958 as a radar operator (911th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron). I've been up there many times over the years and it's cool to imagine him in the barracks below, and working up at the top of the mountain. Thanks for this tour!
I agree with comment that the "rail" on top is for the radome that covered the rotating antenna. The vacuum tubes that powered those radars were enormous. That is what the hoists are for. By 1963, the DEW Line in the Arctic had been operational for six (6) years, and the need for this station was gone. DEW line stations had a new radar that could detect bombers to 180 miles, and became the primary radars for NORAD. The previous Pinetree Line, and Mid-Canada were decommissioned, as was this base. All pieces that could be used at other stations became spares, and the buildings mothballed.

Hey just wondering how much asbestos did u come across. And I'm guessing it was in the installation.
If its any interest to anyone...we visited our son this summer who is in the military and stationed in Germany- there were serviceberry bushes and sweet cherry trees planted around the base. We walked around and enjoyed eating fresh cherries right off the trees there! So its possible the government planted those for those stationed there? This video, in rainy, autumnal Vermont makes me want a hot cup of chocolate and a warm fluffy blanket to snuggle in and watch it. I love Vermont! Thanks for taking us there!❤

Thanks for the tour of someplace I will probably never see myself. My uncle was in the Air Force, a returning POW who then worked at radar stations in the eastern US. Not sure which one but this gave me an idea of how remote he could have been.😊it was top secret stuff back in the day!
20:20 Many military installations in the 1950s were built with central steam plants (i.e. one big boiler) rather than each building having to heat a separate boiler. Downtown Seattle has a functioning municipal steam plant which can be connected to within 5 miles of the plant. The 1910s apartment building I lived in Seattle was connected to Seattle municipal steam.
More towns should do that, it's more efficient although I want to have my own heating Source in case of a shutdown

I went to subscribe and saw I was already subscribed, and then I realized you were the same guy who clears out drains and culverts and had subscribed from those videos. I'm going to have to spend some more time on your channel cause you got some great videos. Keep up the great work.
As to why the stairs did not go to the top- those radars were dangerous when operating. Only certain personnel were authorized to go up top. The radars were classified, as well.
No one should be on the roof while the system was running. The RF power was very high power and would have been deadly.

Many viewers lose interest after 20 minutes and many Americans can't handle a movie beyond 1 hour and 29 minutes so how did they "Handle lord of the rings"?
I rode my mountain bike up there in '95, along with a friend. Back then, the ladders to the top of the towers seemed pretty sketchy, but the view was amazing. Coming down was a rush, going around the switchbacks with the trees right next to us.

I just don’t understand why people have to graffiti/vandalize abandoned buildings. Can’t they just leave these historic places alone? I mean, visit them, but don’t destroy them! Is nothing sacred anymore? Beautiful job on the video nonetheless. ❤❤

The trough coming out of the radar tower was likely a cable chase for all the comm cables connecting back to one of the buildings.

I found some info online and it said 144 men was stationed there for about 8 years. They lived and worked there. They had a living quarters, theater, mess hall and many other amenities.
The reason there are boilers in each building is thats the way they were heated. Oil was used to heat water for radiators. NO GENERATORS FOR EACH BUILDINGS! Just good old fashioned electric lines. The buildings you first explored were barracks.
It is kinda cool when multiple people go to the same location. You can see how the site changes over time, and this is a pretty popular location. Even Proper People went here.

About holes for the toilets, they probably were never in the ground. A lot of commercial/institutional buildings have wall mounted units, so everything goes into a trunkline in/behind the wall that allows for more accessibility to the plumbing for cleanout/work.

I used to do asbestos removal on an army base. I can’t believe they didn’t have that asbestos removed before they shut it down. That’s kind of crazy and the fact that they just leave it like that is crazy oh well, 😮😊
I'm pretty sure all these buildings were tightly secured when they abandoned it, people ripped all the doors off and broke all the windows and cut all the rebar that was welded in

In the 1960s, asbestos was still being installed, so they probably saw no reason to remove it with no safety concerns.

There were 2 more sites that had radio bases and domes removed.
One place was in Cornwall,Ontario and just past the traffic circle.
I walked over the 2 bridges to get in Cornwall Ontario and parked my car at Cheifs gas station in Akwesasne,NY and walk past Domtar paper mill down to the traffic circle.
There was a very long bridge and now been removed. What a view from atop of the bridge.
The other place was in Farmingdale,NY on Long Island right near Republic Airport was a military base and explored some of the remains there.
There's a Nike site in Okd Brookville,NY and you wouldn't know it was there. The silos were flooded and welded.
There a large well pump roughly 30' in diameter. Area is full of poison ivy so be cautious there.
Last site is Mitchell Fielg in Garden City,NY 11530. There is Hofstra and Nassau Community College and active military base there.
There's a big underground portion of the base if you know where to look.
Outside of Rice circle was a entrance. If you look down a drain it went down 30' a b d at the bottom is all red brick pathway. In the old bookstore if you went downstairs behind the steps was another entrance but filled in with dirt.
There's one more s I te out by Montauk Point,NY is an old over the horizon rader dish. Has to be over 100' tall.
Make sure you bring a geiger counter with you at Nassau Hall. Seems someo be found U-234 in a box written in German.

I was yelling "Get out of there!" but you obviously didn't hear me. That looked like an absolute death trap. Looking at those derelict buildings and all that fog made me think that Stephen King would have a ball writing a book about that place. I half expected some killer clown (or Jason) to pop out of some hidden room somewhere...that is another reason I was yelling at you to get out of there. I love your designation of people who scribble on these places and leave their trash behind as "low class individuals". Without using any profanities, you give a very clear picture of your opinion of the type of person who thinks they have to desecrate these places. BTW, I agree with you 100 percent!
The message on the steps said "If *your* looking *SHES* at the bottom of the floor". They did not use contractions or they would have said, "If *you're" looking, *she's" at the bottom of the floor." Maybe they were hinting that you would find a body somewhere in here. Yep, this is definitely a place Stephen King could use as a setting for one of his books.

The boxes on the wall in the broiler room is the typical “parts bins”. All the nuts, bolts, washers and large parts and so on are kept there, easy to see and grab

*Edit* I'm sure you have your own safety measures, but as someone who's explored alone, make sure someone knows where you are and when you get there!
I explored an abandoned town alone once, and when I went to leave I noticed I wasn't alone.... I got out of there asap LOL.
In response to "what do you think was here?" My guess would be that radar antennae. (You did say they are radar towers on Radar Road). Anyway, the one's with the circular "rails" on top likely supported a radome (looks like a giant golf ball) that protected a rotating radar antenna inside.
Lived in central vt for 8 yrs when I was working for uncle Sam. Wife who is from VT took me all over northern vt. Never knew of this place and I'm familiar with the area. Loved doing this with my 4x4 as there is a lot of hidden history there. Wish I knew of this place. I don't miss vt at all. Hate rain and clouds. The politics and expense suck but it is a pretty state. My 4x4 days are over but I still love to live through your videos. Thanks. In the desert now. Dry no rain.

This was one of the most enjoyable exploration videos I've ever watched. Felt like I was hanging out with a friend. Didn't need any background music, the ambience was perfect as is and cool/creepy with the towers looming in the fog. Excellent 👍👍

There's no mould in the gym area due to the natural airflow with all the doors and windows missing. More chance of moss growing rather than mould. Great upload as per usual mate.👍🏻🙏🏻

I'm from Surry Virginia, and have taken RT 9 and 7 through Vermont...absolutely most beautiful picturesque place imaginable, and I'm used to the Colonial Williamsburg area.. have yet to see Vermont in fall.. I can only imagine how gorgeous it is. New England colors are much sharper than the mid Atlantic.

This was very cool. We had no idea this place existed. Mum about had a heart attack watching you on the roof! Its a beautiful spot.
Those boilers you seen was for producing steam for probably the galley or mess hall cooking equipment and heating the buildings as there was probably piping that ran thru out the complex. Steam was used in the 60’s and 70’s to heat building thru radiators and such. I used to work on those steam producing boilers in the late 70’s earlier 80’s in military bases overseas.
