Hey kids! Its time for weekend wankshop 210 with your good buddy Uncle Ben! In this lesson, i'm gonna be showing you guys how to play a riff you've been begging for a lesson on... its that super groovy, heavy, and funky riff from 8:18 into The Last Baron by Mastodon! Y'all know i love Crack the Skye, and this is without a doubt one of the best riffs on the album. Its in drop C tuning, and features a lot of stuff mastodon does: open strings, pull-offs, and unison notes. Its a blast.
What other classic riffs have Brent and Bill churned out that you want to learn how to play? Let me know in the comments below!!!
Ibanez RG520QS
Dimarzio EVO pickup
Kemper Profiler, Marshall JCM800 profile
nothing but net - Hudba
Thanks for learning this sick riff from The Last Baron! What other Mastodon songs you wanna learn how to play?!
The chorus riff from word to the wise is fucking huge
Hearts Alive the first 3 minutes!
I’d love to see the opening riff to Scorpion Breath.
I’d like to see some stuff off Call of the Mastodon. In particular the intro arpeggios to Battle at Sea
Awesome. Divinations is still hard to beat
at this point you should just break down every mastodon riff
That one's pretty easy and the tabs are pretty accurate
Greyson Grill yea not for every song though plus some people learn better through videos
@@MattKilleen798 Think he might have been joking
Sehguhnai huh?
@@MattKilleen798 He referred to every riff as a singular riff.
Yep, that is indeed one of the most badass riffs in history.
I knew which one you were talking about immediately
I have asked a few times. So stoked.
I didn’t, there’s so many cool riffs in The Last Baron that it could have been any of them.
Well shucks, half the song could have qualified.
Dude I laughed out fucking loud when it came on because I was SO sure it was going to be this riff.
I did too
6:50-8:15 from The Czar, also off of Crack the Skye. That whole segment has a bunch of riffs worth learning... A riff-rich environment, if you will. lol
Yes my guy, soo good!
" the Martyr is ending his life for mineee "
Yes please!
@@_dmfd that part is amazing.
oh man its the roach dogs little boy!
This melted my brain when I watched Live at the Aragon. It's one the to hear it, but seeing it played takes it to another level. I had backstage passes to see them a few months ago, and we got to watch the soundcheck. They played Sultan's Curse and Sleeping Giant. Just watching them play Sleeping Giant with only 15 people watching was an immensely emotional experience.
That sounds absolutely incredible, I'd have died a happy man.
I read "that sick riff in the last baron" and knew exactly the one lmfao
That riff is the audiobook definition of "Funky Fresh"
Just listened to this song today and god damn, I get Dimebag vibes hearing that bad ass riff. Amazing song. Phenomenal album.
This video is what got me into Mastodon and exploring more of their riffs. Now Im in love.
Their whole catalog is incredible and has something for everyone. My 2 favorite albums of theirs are Crack The Skye and The Hunter for sure, but everything they write is amazing.
That's awesome you did this. I tell everyone that this seriously might be one of the best riffs ever written in rock especially when I am trying to get them into Mastodon.
As an aging metal head I'd wandered onto the internet to find new music to listen to many times before. Recommendations would come in droves and I'd try out bands and maybe I'd find a song or two I liked. Over the years Mastodon would get recommended time and again and time and again I'd listen to them and it didn't click. Then I gave Crack The Skye a try and I thought it was... ok. Then at the end of the album they had the instrumental versions of the songs. And that's when it finally clicked for me. The guitar work on that album is incredible. I go through phases where I'll listen to that album over and over for months at a time. It's fucking incredible.
As my favorite guitar youtube guy, it pleases me greatly to know that you like it too.
You're the best, Ben!
You sound like a virgin girl waiting for your perfect knight in shining armor. I respect that.
I always loved blade catcher on the blood mountain record. The harmonies are just fantastic.
'Sick' is an understatement for that riff! Love your work, Ben!
Mark Copeland he also said it’s one of the most badass riffs in history...
That harmonic ear candy dude! Those little things that make mastodon riffs so special!
Such an awesome tutorial on such a sick riff! Thanks, man, your stuff is absolutely amazing!
Yes! Knew it was gonna be this one as soon as I saw the thumbnail. Great stuff, as always!
Fantastic video, thank you! I might get myself into a habit of watching one of these every morning to keep myself fresh.
Ben, you are great because you cover all the DETAILS!!! You get it right! Merry Christmas : )
For anyone trying to learn this the 5th fret pull of to the 3rd of the D string at 3.29 isn't how mastodon plays it. They pick the open G string and then the 3rd Of D. Rock on and good luck!
Another amazing lesson ben thank you.. your a inspiration
I've not seen nor heard a better transcriber than you Benny. Absolute mastery.
Love your videos they have massively improved my guitar playing thank you.
4:25 of Jaguar God please! Pure epicness!!!
Always wanted to learn how to play this and I now do thanks to this video. Thank you for this, man!
I knew what riff it was without even having to listen to this... (listened anyway and was satisfied ... )
Not just Mastodon’s best riff, but one of the best riffs of all time. Honestly couldn’t not believe my ears the first time I heard that part.
The little fill my Brann that goes over the bar line halfway through is just so perfect
Thank you so much dude! I've been dying to learn this.
For the record, "the riff" gets the majority of it's power from being the only 4/4 riff in the song. It acts as the perfect breathing, headbanging break in the middle of all you've been through in the last 8 minutes. This, and the psychadelic-esque sections that follow both are perfect transitions as well.
All in all: the song, and its structure, are a masterwork of flow, and "the riff" is lightning rod in the middle of it all. Because it rules so hard, it becomes "the moment" in a 13-minutes song.
But you always stay 'til the end.
Crack The Skye is also one of my favorite albums of all time, and The Last Baron is easily one of my very favorite songs of all time. There's so much going on and it felt like they just went for it and had so much fun.
Rad, thanks for breaking it down like that! I played punk rock for 10 years, took five years off, and picked up the guitar again a few weeks ago. I'm into metal these days and my hands no longer do what my brain tells them to- this was super helpful and I can't wait to start putting it all back together.
Sick lesson! Jaw dropping riff! I guess uncle Ben should consider doing a top 10/20 favorite riffs
Good point about hearing the thickness of the mix and mistaking that for fifths or other intervals.
DAMN...that is one sick riff! great video...
Well done Ben! Now I need to try this 😫🤤
Happy New Year UncleBen:0) Sooo stoked to see you working / posting masto again \m/,
Thanks for spreading your knowledge. I've been writing music for years and got in a rut...decided to dust off the ole chops, and your channel is a frickin blessing.
Thanks for this my brotha 🤙🏼 love your git fiddle 😎
I really like that you're starting to do more metal playthrougs and lessons
Man, this riff is sick! Thanks
This riff was def sick, my favorite riff off of Crack The Skye was in the song "The Czar" close to 4 min in. That riff combined with branns drum fills blew my mind.
More Mastodon, more of me slaving away over my guitar for weeks. Always a good time to see you break down the best riffs around, thanks Uncle!
Now we need the best Opeth riffs or we shall never be sated. I vouch either the first main riff from Ghost of Perdition or the riff that comes in at around 5:15 into Blackwater Park till next weekend.
Thanks to introduce me to a great song !
Wow. So on point
No particular riff comes to mind but Show Yourself has a lot of articulate bits that are hard to dissect
Damn that's a good riff and mastodon is great.. But we also need more Gojira riffs tho uncle pls
Toxic Garbage Island has some great intricacies I'd love to see demonstrated
For sure. The whole song is filled with less common chord shapes that are hard to replicate. And that nassive harmonic in the intro is difficult
@@SpectrumAudiophile The way I play it is hammering on the lowest 2 strings from open to the 2nd fret with my index finger, then play the 5th-fret harmonic on the top 3 strings with my pinky. I find that makes it easier to play. Hopefully this helps.
Very excellent indeed.
Damn that riff is amazing 🤘🏻🤘🏻
love it, thanks
The song Crack the Skye,
Pendulous Skin
High Road bridge lead guitar riff
Jaguar God
I Love your Videos.
Shit yeah buddy. I personally get really freakin lost trying to follow the tabs. Thanks for breaking it down all step dad style and what not 🤘🏻💀🤘🏻
This riff is killer! Uncle Ben rules!
Love you Uncle Ben!
Thanks man. You're a bad ass.
That last clean bit from Pantera Floods would be a good Christmas gift. Uncle Ben
Step dad speed LOL! Great instructions man
yyyeeeeeeesssssssss. please do more Crack the Skye!
Thank you!!
Thanks, man!
There's a video of Billy Kelliher on here playing that riff, that's how I learned to play it.
Yes, yes it is!
I always love seeing Frank looming at cranium level.
Yes!
Haha knew exactly what you meant when I read the title. \m/ thank you.
The riff at the end of seabeast would love to have a word
Jared the louder the better
Secret best Mastodon riff
That one kicks ass, but the middle riff to megalodon is my favorite mastodon riff by far followed by this one
SICK riff! SICK band! SICK uncle Ben!
Truly of epic proportions.
We NEED unleash the fire by symphony x
that insanely mind twisted cool otherworldly lick at 4min25 of Jaguar God
this is sick!
I wish I could learn to play the czar ...
Oh and you're right ... Crack the Skye is probably one of the best metal album ever
The mad genius of Hinds.
Loving the masto-wankshops
Would love to see you breakdown the verse riff from “This Mortal Soil”!
Pendulous skin intro!
The Bubonic J. Nah whole song!
Ooh I taught myself that one, would like to see how it actually goes
There's some decent tabs for that one out there just have a gander.
It truly is one of the most badass
Lol i was recommended a video of bill playing this riff alone right after watching.
Thanks!!
uncle Ben rocks ❤
This is Mastofantastic! Due to the fact you love Mastodon, and they are the best band in the universe, you should only focus on their stuff. You rock Uncle Ben
this has nothing to do with the vid, but the picture of you in the crown and sceptre looks like something the landlord in my local pub would do. he paints constantly and the pub is full of his pictures: one of them is a self-portrait and it looks really similar. he's a very angry, overweight serbian man in his 50s, but rest assured he is also a terrible artist. here ends transmission.
Is this pub in Serbia by any chance?
Tom Macmillan hilarious
THANKS!
Killer braaa!
I learned this whole song from the Crack the Skye tab book. It's a solid transcription IMO.
My biological stepdad kills it again!! Excellent!
That guitar is a beauty
That riif is the beast
Full lesson!!!!
Thanks, Uncle Ben!
Now, I'm ready to impress my stepdad
Thank you.
DIO - We Rock. I just can't play properly intro riff, lesson would be nice, thanks in advance Uncle!
You should do next time trapped in the corner by death there is a great tasty riff in that song you'll know it when you listen
Fuck yeah. Definitely one of my favorite Mastodon riffs.
Hey uncle Bendo, I did a little guitar jamboree with mr dirty B-hinds that they offer to fans while touring. I asked him how he plays this riff, and he hybrid picked it.
droidmonger makes sense!
Possibly my favorite Mastodon song
I love you Uncle Ben
My god that's just SICK
The first time I heard this tune, I nearly creamed my pants!
Crack the skye is my favourite Mastodon album by far.
Yeppers awesome
Great video!
