"Wild Ireland": Glendalough in Autumn, County Wicklow, Ireland

  • Glendalough (Gleann Dá Loch), meaning 'The Valley of the Two Lakes' is a glacial valley in County Wicklow, Ireland, renowned for an Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin. Situated in the Wicklow Mountains National Park and boasting some of Ireland's best mountain scenery with its deep moody lakes, rushing rivers and tumbling waterfalls, the Glendalough Valley is among the country's top tourist attractions offering incredible walking opportunities. From the 6th century monastic ruins with their iconic round tower near the Lower Lake, to the C19th lead mines at the 'Miners' Village' at the far end of the Upper Lake, Glendalough is a landscape replete with history and heritage. Autumn is one of the finest times to visit as the deciduous trees and bracken turn rich shades of russet, orange and yellow, and the deer rut (mating season) is at its height.
    Our circular route took us from the monastic site skirting the western side of the Lower Lake, past the shore of the Upper Lake and along the Miners' Road towards the zig-zag track up to Van Diemen's Land and the Glenealo Valley. From here we followed the boardwalk along the Spinc and the descent to the Poulanass Waterfall, before passing the eastern side of the Lower Lake along another boardwalk back to the monastic site.
    Music tracks in this film are:
    Alexi Murdoch: Song For You
    Nick Drake: Northern Sky
    John Butler Trio: Young and Wild

      +PATRICK ŻERKOWSKI Thanks for your generous comment. The Wicklow Mountains are on our doorstep (we live in Wicklow Town) but we hadn't really shot much film here! Glad you liked the result. We kept having to dodge the Vikings film crew!!

      They were there back in July with a whole village built on the shore, long boats and all! We saw them filming at the Miners' Village in Glendalough - actors running round with huge swords, clad in helmets fighting each other!! It wasn't so funny though when we were refused entrance to the Miners' Road the first day we went up, as they were filming and we had to go back home!

    Sharron/Martin, a stunning glimpse into the Wicklow Mountains. Loved the time lapses of the lough and the super smooth tracking shots. Beautiful light in the forest and later in the day before it clouded over. Some absolutely super shots of the flora and wildlife. Brilliant stuff :-)

    • @Kernowclimber
      @Kernowclimber Před 8 lety +2

      +gerry mcveigh Thanks, Gerry. Filming in this part of the Wicklow Mountains in particular is tricky, for besides trying to dodge the Vikings film crew and hordes of noisy school parties, the proximity to Dublin and the fact that Glendalough is well served by Paddy Wagons, means there are always lots of visitors and walkers. Doing time lapse is a very lengthy process and people are apt to blunder into frame, or chuck stones into mirror flat lakes, which can render the whole sequence totally worthless! Patience and luck are therefore required in spadefuls!

      +WyeExplorer, Glendalough is a really beautiful part of the Wicklow Mountains, close to where we live. We've spent many hours up there researching and surveying the extant lead mining remains and got to truly appreciate and love the place. There is a lot of nature round there as you say, but to experience the sika deer up that close is exceptional, as they are usually very skittish and run away before you get chance to film them. In the rutting season they seem to lose their inhibitions. It is rather awe inspiring to hear the bellowing of the bucks echoing round the valley. Glad you liked the film and thanks for your kind remarks.
