Patty PerShayla | "Closer to the Heart" - RUSH (Ukulele Cover w/ Tabs)

- 2022 update: Welcome to my channel, YYNOT "NOT-heads" and all other Rush fans alike. Please feel free to take a look around, as I have a lot of original music with my own power trio, plus a few more ukulele covers and songs requested by some of my Patreon supporters. There are links listed below if you would like to support me monthly through Patreon, purchase some of my music and merch on Bandcamp, or follow along on social media and streaming services. I am very happy to play music for a living and incredibly grateful to my small (but growing) online community who helps feed me and replace the occasional broken string. I hope you stick around, no matter what level of support you are comfortable giving. After all this gift is beyond price, almost free.
A lot of people are finding this after the news of Neil Peart's passing and it comforts me to know how many others out there were touched by his music. This song always resonated with me, especially the first line, which reminds me to use my voice for righteous causes. I encourage you to donate to a cancer research charity in Mr. Peart's name, as the RUSH website suggests.
I've been watching the RUSH documentary on Netflix with my dog, Geddy Lee, and am inspired by Neil in particular, as he continued to take drum lessons after being considered a master. I think of the trio often when I practice my bass, the instrument I am most passionate about.
Thank you for your encouragement in the comments. I know it's unusual for a young woman to love a nerdy progressive rock band but their pursuit of creativity is universal. Please continue sharing great music with your kids and don't be afraid to listen to some of theirs, too. Keep it close to your heart.

This deserves a billion likes.
It deserves so many likes that it breaks you tune..Exceeds the integer amount.
It warms my Heart that so many years since 1977 Rush music is still alive in people born many years later - well done Patti!
Iâm 54 and have been a rush fan since I was 14.đđšđŠ
Forever.....
With the Uke, it makes you look like a giant. I'm currently in the middle of a Patty PerShayla rabbit hole. Having fun.
Usually Rush covers are done so poorly. This was so refreshing. Well done
I've no doubts Geddy, Alex *and* Neil slipped in here under the cover of night and left their blessing...no doubts, whatsoever :-)
Simple setting. Simple instrument. Simple message.
Edit: Patty ... you're awesome. I'm so glad you've joined YYNOT ... it's a win for all of us.
When I was in middle school, I went to see my first concert. It was the Rush 2112 Tour (with UFO and Cheap Trick). I can tell you something for certain⊠I did not expect to be watching a brilliant young lady covering one of their songs - on my iPhone - 46 years later! Thanks, Patti. If you cover âSurenderâ and âLights out (In London)â⊠mind blown.
Here following the news of Neil Peart's passing. Fantastic rendition of he and Peter Talbot's words of wisdom
I am surprised this doesn't have a million likes.
it will have soon

@@murraymacdonald4959 It certainly does help a full-time musician if this connected with you enough to share. Thanks, folks! :)

Love it!!
I hear ya
The joy you express playing this is truly heart warming
You've now taken YYNOT to a new level.. congratulations on joining a fantastic band..!!
I love it!! No autotune necessary for this girl.
Nicely done!
despite being familiar with rush since 1976, and NOT being a fan of rush, i think this presentation by Patti is lovely.
A song for the generations.
Geddy, Niel, Alex.....look what you started. Absolutely wonderful â€
I have followed YYNOT since 2020, I loved the band, but knew the singer needed some flash, boots, etc, When Patty joined, I knew they found what they needed. Good, clean, honest living. Good Lock Patty, .... Dave Eisenman.
Wonderful. Younger generations benefitting from Rush. A very listenable cover of a VERY listenable song.
Very few people have the voice to do Rush songs justice, so I am so happy to see someone nail the vocal tone so perfectly. Love this cover!
Iâve just become a fan of yours Patti through YYNOT. So much talent!
This young lady is an incredible talent.
I almost didn't click. I'm glad I did. Very well done!
You sang and played with such an open and free spirit that you captured the essence of this song and made it your own. Just wonderfulđ¶đđ»
UNBELIEVABLE!!!! â€â€â€
I love this! A great song by the greatest band. Thank you Patty, you've got an amazing voice! RIP Professor.
Patty you're obviously a very passionate and skilled musician and singer. Thank you for choosing Rush as one of your passions. You are keeping them alive, well done!!
Neil Peart also wrote Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road, a book that helped me out tremendously when my Dad passed away.
This song is one of my favorites.
nice to see some young people know and appreciate great music
That's the most amazing tribute I've heard yet. You have such an awesome voice. You should be on stage and the radio. God bless your voice.
This is incredible. Hope the rest of the world loves your sound as much as I do. #EnjoyBeing
so nice. Itâs hard to accept that Rush is no more . With vids like this we are fine
sailing into destinyâŠ
Something larger than life happens at 1:15. You can see the wind pick up too.
This will always be one of my favorite videos.
A very talented artist at work here. Thank you for sharing this. đšđŠ
SO heartwarming & encouraging to see the under 40 set appreciating Rush! I'm encouraged for their legacy! Well done! & thank you for a little sunshine amidst this dark time for Rush fans.

A year after Neal's passing, this song popped into my head, wondering if I could track it down for ukulele. I find myself moved to tears not so much by my feelings for Rush (I like 'em fine, and do love this song) as by your profound performance. So much joy and power here, and real beauty. Thanks so much for sharing the *accurate* tabs, too! I especially appreciated you notating when there's an extra or moved finger from the standard chord shape! I don't think I've ever seen anyone take such care with this! Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
Thanks for the kind words, Tim! I am glad the tabs were helpful for you. It was my first try at tablature!
@@PattyPerShayla I wish everybody did it the way you do! Thanks again!
this planet may have a chance after all...
excellent đđđ
A great cover from an obvious Rush fan. Nice job on Geddy's high notes (this from a drummer, Rush fan, and someone who has seen them 10+ times)!
I just cried a little. That was beautiful. Welcome to YYNOT!
No words.. absolutely beautiful !
Man, i just found this. I love this.
WOW! Nicely played and sung!
With an amplified mic, I've not seen anyone replicate Geddy as closely as you (YYNOT videos). Just incredible.
You can be the captain, Patty!
Good Lord, I've watched this 4 times today.... I would love to hear a tribute album. Bootlegs of live performances just aren't enough! =)
That was most excellent. Very happy you have joined forces with YYNOT.
Love the passion... Its comes from the heart. Thank you. x
Always got time for a fun Rush cover.
And she's now a member of YYNOT. Subbed.
Sure will miss you being in YYNOT. I think you were the best front woman and singer. Good job on this one, it was personal and fun. God bless you my friend.

Saw this video on social media because a friend shared it. Super cool! Love it! Keep doing what youâre doing.
This should have at least a million views.
Killer performance and sweet tribute to Mr. Peart ~
Thanks for making me cryđą Well done young lady. Very, very well doneâ€ïž
Patty I missed you in yy not. I love your voice
Totally killed it! :) And that you laughed when you sang HEART!! Nice!
Obviously a heartfelt and charming (and I'm not using "charming" in the sense that's a synonym for "cute" but in its original meaning that's associated with things magical) cover of one of my favorite Rush songs. Well done!
You did it good girl! Love it. You hit those Geddy notes. Nice!
Great job! Love your words on the description box. Letâs spread Rush music! đ€đŒđđŒ
Longtime guitarist, Rush fan, and as of recently a ukulele player. Been working on a uke version of this tune. Somehoe I don't think I can top this... I almost cried. Beautifully done.
Aw, thank you!! I have the tabs in the description if you want to learn my version. Obviously it's not exactly the original but it functions similarly.
Beautiful! You did this song justice, from a Canadian :)
This young lady has a bright future in music!!! AWESOME!!!
Saw her live last night with YYNOT and was just blow the f away. Amazing instrument. Fantastic performance sensibility. Hard to not just love as a rock front person. Keep killin it. As someone who came to Rush in 84⊠Iâd never heard any of those tunes sung so damned well. All the goosies. Best wishes and take care of that incredible voice!
This is FANTASTIC!!!
PATTY, YOU WIN THE GOLD,..............
great rendition :)
Awesome. Believe me, you have fans here in Brazil. God Bless you and keep the excellent work!
I think this is the best Rush cover I have ever heard.
RIGHTEOUS RIFFS Geddy Lee would be proud!
That was beautiful. Well done!
Well done very refreshing version
Love your voice on this!!
I was coming from watching the Harp Twins outstanding cover of the song, so I wasnât expecting singing here. So glad I was wrong. Lovely done
I appreciate the song even more ....beautiful
rush lives on with the young
Way to go, Patty!
Fantastic cover, thank you so much for doing this!
A penchant to draw the essence.. with the freedom of thought and love... to make this so totally bad ass.... that the RUSH community salutes you and your soaring talent.....
I didn't know a ukulele could be played like this. Well done
Can't wait to hear her with Yynot!!!
First Rush tune that was co-written by an external songwriter alongside Neil. The management wanted a slightly more charts-friendly single release, and Closer to the Heart became that track. The entire arrangement and melody was 100% Alex, Ged, and Neil - nobody dared question their strengths in that area, but the lyrics were slightly massaged by a co-writer.
Hey -- it all worked out.
Closer to the heart, YEH-EH!
oh my gosh the spirit of the song is so alive, in the best meaning of the lyrics.
kisses :-o
I could not subscribe to this channel fast enough. Beautiful song in a beautiful, serene background. Bravo.
Awesome I love your cover! I am a 19-year old woman and it's so fun to see other women Rush fans too!â„
Outstanding Young Lady !!
Your perform with YYNOT very amazing.
I'm a new fan but a huge one! So much talent in that unassuming lady đ
Hey Patty! Rush is my favorite group... and you "nailed it"... Great job!
What a great tribute to Rush! So much talent for you to cover the song this way. Amazing job!
This was the slice of awesomeness I needed in my life today! So cool and supremely talented. Love, LOVE this!
As a longtime RUSH fan since '77, all I can say is, neato!
A fantastic and unique version while keeping the feel of the original, thanks so much. :)
Excellent !!!
You picked a great song to cover. That was brilliant! Love your voice and you know how to rock it out with some grittiness. Love it.
Thanks! Rush is one of my all-time favorites. âșïž
I just gonna say: Wow!
As a ukulele player and a Rush fan, this is much appreciated! (Great pipes, by the way!)
Be The Change! Rock On.
Found your singing from the group YYNOT channel I have been subbed to for a few years. Very Impressive Patty! And I LOVE that you can do this on the Uke !!
This track gave me hope in my lost teenage years - you capture the spirit of the song well
Just came back from the Galway Uke Fest. I think they would have really loved this. :)
Thanks for sharing this. Can't stop watching it.
