- Award winning African author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tells Jon Snow why her latest book Americanah mirrors some of the central issues of her own life; race, immigration and the power of hair.
Am I the only one who is like in love with her voice and accent? I can listen to her speak for hours!
OMGitsShrimp You're not the only one, my friend.
+OMGitsShrimp Yes yes yes!! I think most people re, also she is a very smart woman(: I think she is so beautiful , and her accent is to die for honestly!
Anthonia Grace Yes, I believe she does. Or more correctly, she pronounces regular English to make it sound so melodious and beautiful(: The words have rich slightly altered undertones of French too, I love it!!
Are you female or male? I am male and I really love her voice and personality.
Always-Stay-Positive I'm female, haha I just love her face and voice yeah she's beautiful, very smart too!!
She's a beauty. Intelligent AND a brilliant writer!
Very true
I'm positively in love with everything Chimamanda represents as an African woman and as an intellectual icon
I wish the interviewer had actually allowed her to answer some of his questions. I really like Chimamanda and what she has to say.
Marisela Mendoza Brakebill Old white man. He is probably used to being the one speaking even when he is the interviewer.
Marisela Mendoza Brakebill
hello princess
He’s a nice man actually, but his job was mostly interviewing politicians, and I think he hadn’t adjusted his style properly for this interview. It comes across as if he’s grilling her a bit, which is unfortunate.
She is such an author role model. I love her poise, confidence, balance. She has made a career for herself telling the stories that mean the most to her, and they just to happen to be the stories that we need to hear...ShesSuchAnInspiration :)
I agree with you 100%.
+CJ Johnson She is one of my favourites! She's so inspirational... I just love her
"No we can't stop talking about race… There's no such thing as color-blindness." Chimamanda hit the nail on the head! Will be getting my copy of the book.
Also are you fucking simple? Yes, there is such a thing as color-blindness. Do you even gene process?
Hahaha fair enough. You have to agree that there is a difference between color-blindness and the idea that people are isolated from their environments.
Isolated from their environments?... Then people choose not to see!
If there was such a thing as colour blindness, why is there racism right?! Its laughable when people (not particularly him) use the term and have no understanding of how it really doesn't apply to how people experience life in the Western world. Also love the point she made about how very segregated US is and how that impacts a lot of things...
Travelmaker Kai at what mark does she say that?
She's a well-rounded, brilliant and stunning woman of substance..
My lecturer lent me Americanah last year and i fell in love with Chimamanda n when i heard her We Should All be Feminists and Dangers of a Single Story i was blown away
zandile mbatha , I still listen to “ the danger of a single story” talk! She blows my mind! I adore this woman!
I could listen to her for hours
she gives me hope. what an amazing lady.
Serestine Haitembu I'm glad.
Serestine Haitembu I like her too.
Same here! Hope like a fountain!!
I admire her so much.
What an absolutely stunning and admirable woman
Some of these questions were so cringeworthy :( but she handled it well.
Morgan Jones qI
'some of them' is kind of yours.
How?
Morgan Jones I
I am so Taken by her.

Absolutely fantastic she interviews so well! Body language, demeanour and diplomacy!! As a Nigeria I totally understand why she respond s the way she does!! Very intelligent and sharp!
Exactly!
+Aso Paso That is not race, but ethnicity. And also, you must not know about Nigerians very well if you do not know that we try to speak diplomatically.
know The Way I would take it that you have not watched her other videos. Try to enlighten yourself before airing an opinion.
She has a Nigerian degree from UNN. Ode!
@know The Way even if she wanted to eradicate all Problems in Nigeria, she can't on her own and surely you yourself cannot bring your own country to justice
I liked how challenging this interview was. She delivered flawlessly and you could tell she poured her soul into the book
"flawlessly" haha good pun
"I see uno a bit about black ppl hair"😂😂😂😭 shade
I'm interested in hair too. I'm interested in black women wearing their hair the way it grows from their head. Love you, Amanda. You are all colors of amazing.
She reminds me of "Phenomenal Woman". Phenomenally. :)
Smart and beautiful Igbo lady. Bet she makes a mean jollof as well. Spectacular woman! ❤️
You are taking mamma Africa to the highest level...
So pound of you for been proudly a daughter of mamma Africa ❤️🌍
i loooove her.
incredible woman
Having read some of the responses, let me opined by saying that the interviewer might just wanted to push as many questions in as possible given the short time frame of the interview! I didn’t get the feeling he was condescending but probing he was! That’s the hall mark of a great interviewer!!
Having said that, let me join you in saying that Chimamanda is a class act! She is holistically poised, highly intelligent and an exceptional writer! I have read almost all of her books, listened to most of her interviews and speeches and I just cannot get enough of her! I am Jamaican with 58% Nigerian according to my DNA profile! I hope I am from the Igbo tribe! Lol! I just love this young accomplished woman!
Was anyone else slightly annoyed by how much he interrupted and cut her off...
+Lineoutt i think that's the way it works.. don't quote me on that though
No. The time was short and he was as eager as yourself.
i barely noticed that bt ok.
Think he was just excited
No I actually liked how engaged he was
She took five years because its genius. The word selection... I can't get over it.
I love this woman so much, She says everything i feel!
She is good
she is such a beautiful and magnetic speaker. I've probably spent the last hour watching her.
She's so attractive
I live in the UK and currently work in media, I assure you the interviewer was perfectly fine. This is a television spot with time management vital during an interview. This is not a ted talk or a university speaking seminar. I respect everyone wants to hear chimamanda express herself fully, better you watch a speaking engagement or seminar she has done not a TV channel special. These are short programs that have to be managed well and controlled by the anchor. At least she wasn't interviewed by piers Morgan.
Dotunn Finally, someone with sense in the comments. Why are people complaining about his interviewing style? He is a Journalist and his job is to elicit the answer from the interviewee so that all viewers understand what is being discussed. Some people on here trying to make it a racial matter. Wth?? His wife is Black. He is aware and in touch. I've grown up watching him. Shut up haters. It was so good to read your reply. Hi five to you brother.👍🏿👏🏿
UK 🇬🇧
Thank you to the interviewer for not antagonising her or being rude (like some BBC freak in another interview I just watched). She is an amazing woman.
Agreed. Even though I can tell there is a lot he doesn't understand about racial issues (not to make it sound like I am an expert, because I'm not), I think people are being a little too hard on him. He seems like a nice guy even if he isn't savvy about certain things. He seems to be trying to understand what she's saying to the best of his ability.
The most obnoxious interviewer I've seen on CZcams is this guy who interviewed Susan Sontag back in the day, and she totally let him know how full of shit he was
Please can you post me that Bbc interview? Thanks.
I absolutely adore her! She's strong, beautiful and opinionated. A true inspiration!!
I love everything about this chimamanda with passion.
She certainly is a great speaker.
I just love this woman, she is enchanting. She speaks with this natural sensuality that keeps you glued to her. Her take on things is just so agreeable to me.
I really like your saying about the society image 'straight hair is beautiful'... I never thought of it as an influence of the western. what a thoughtful women. I like the way you expressed it as well.
I love Jon, his curiosity, his questions and engagement
A lady with true class!
What a stunning woman! Just luminous!
She's so beautiful, glowing, beautiful hairstyle 😍😍
I think people have misunderstood Jon Snow, the Journalist and interviewer. Ive grown up watching him on TV. All Journalists have a limited timeslot to elicit as much info as pos from the interviewee and make that info understandable to as many people as pos. His way of interviewing is distinctive. Ha ha! Check out his interview with Russell Brand on You Tube. Some have tried to use the race card here. Well, he has been married for many years to a Black woman. So he is more in touch and aware than you think.
UK 🇬🇧 👍🏿
This lady.. effortlessly brilliant
I could not overlook the hesitation and this sense of shame/discomfort when questioned about his mother's wigs. Hair really does mean a lot to some people.
Exactly loved how she executed that questioning 😂
shes my role model
Hair is such a beautiful expression of who you like to reflect your true self. 💘 it 😊
She is a spectacular author...read her book Americanah you will love it💖
She is so beautiful and regal 😊
Her intellect poise strenght and beauty are singularly awsome together she is illuminating with a gravitational pull.
I must say, Chimamanda is incredibly well-spoken. This interview made me burst with laughter and reflect on my own life at the same time. It's interesting she said the first time she noticed race was when she came to the USA. I was raised colorblind, so growing up I don't remember a single thing with regard to race. It's only now in college, that my perceptions involving race have been enlightened (to say the least)
intellect, calm, confident,Luv this treasure of a woman
I so enjoy her conversation 👏👏❤️
Beautiful women with beautful mind....flawless
I love this woman!
I love you too ❤❤❤😚😚😚😜
She's beautiful...in many ways.
I'm so glad that I got to know about this lady, she's such an inspiration... Just love her
Being Nigerian is fantastic ! If you're rich like Ms Adichie.
If you're not rich or well connected....think again.!
I really don't understand why he kept cutting her off when she would try to answer his questions.
believeNachieve I don't understand why either but it was incredibly annoying.
believeNachieve INTIMIDATED MY HER beauty
shand seimela or her intelligence?
also her intelli
Really?! You don't know why...he's an old white man...they trounce all over women in conversation.
I believe hair is really important because many people judge it as they would with skin colour. People with afro hairs are immediately almost always considered black.
She dresses Superbly! :)
I wish all our African women could emulate Chimamanda concerning hair
She's the best!!! She even speak the truth. (y)
Victor Adeyemo Lol Victor
Awah Felix Electricity and all those convenient things..., "I also like I can leave Nigeria" those are the core truth :D
November... 2019. She is amazing.
Beauty and brains . It doesn't get better than that. She makes me so proud to be African.
she is my hero!!!!
her gap is so beautiful 😍 she is so amazing
I'm finding some of his questions rude and silly, but absolutely love her.
I keep coming back hear.
Well spoken, well presented and love u sister. I love the debate u had on donal trump 4 years ago where this old man didnt accept racism.
she inspires me for really.
I so love everything about this woman.
She‘s so stunning & inspiring, love her! 😍
The layer of understanding each others experiences....yes and connecting to them
She is very beautiful.. 😍
I liked the interviewer as well. He is genuinely interested and sweet.
Yes. I don't know why they speak so badly of him in the comments. They're both sweet and you can tell she's comfortable with him.
@@dblck9 I think so too. If he was in a hurry, I guess its because he has limited time.
@@dblck9 His wife is Black. So his is aware and in the know 🙂👍🏿
Malaysia. His wife is Black. So he is aware and in the know🙂👍🏿
as usual......on point ! fantastic
She should run for President of Nigeria
I love CHIMAMNDA NGOZI ADICHIE 😍😍😍😍.
She was so patient and gracious with his ignorance. He’s exhausting.
He was leading the messenger with race! Chimamanda Never adressed race.
Kofi Rey Jon Snow is a brillant journalist. I've grown up watching him. He is aware and in the know. His wife is Black. UK 🇬🇧 🙂👍🏿

this is the the type of role model people should have
This is lovely and quaint and strange all at the same time. Jon Snow, ha. Flirting for England!
Am 💯% Proud Of You My Sister....
Chimamanda 😍😍😍😍😍. The best
Best at what?

Xenon Nemrod ?
When he says love between two Nigerians is more organic because they share the same country is pretty frightening. He seems to say you can only fall in love well with someone from the same exact background as you... Pretty old-fashioned and close-minded
True
You may take her on that, absolutely you do not understand where her statement comes from, you are the one who has close mind. When you dont understand ones reality so don't just make assumptions that she is old fashioned. Besides, have you travelled more like her and mix with people of different backgrounds and races. She knows the reasons why she said it. Stop being a hater.....
livluvlive Not true hon. His wife of many years is a Black woman.
@@sarahjustice526 Not true. His wife is a Black woman.
I love her book it opened my eyes to issues I never thought about before and it helped me understand the USA's election a bit more still a bit confused though
Such an intelligent woman
Wake up...FLAWLESS
Spending so much time on one's hair means that this person doesn't have more important things to do with her time/money. Of course that is a man's viewpoint. Perhaps there is something more important about hair than I have ever heard articulated. I am sure there are MANY cultural things that white hillbillies (my culture) spend their time on that also seems not really worth the time. I have always had a question in my mind "what is REALLY a good use of my time?" Today I chose to hear this lady talk about "having only one story" and that was absolutely worth my time. We form our habits, then our habits form us.
mtnprivy That makes soooooo much sense. 'We form habits and then our habits form us.'
mtnprivy African natural hair has been mistreated for centuries: straightened, ironed, despised, shamed. her love for her hair can be paralleled with her love of herself, of Black self-love in a world where the standard for beauty is White, straight hair, blonde and extremely thin. It's way more serious than you think...
Maryse Matoko You are bringing Black American context into hair though...
Ant rip i'm actually African like Chimamanda. This issue concerns all Black people not just African American people.
So proud of you...
So beautiful you are 🌍🌹
i love her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jon Snow should probably read her book so he can wake up and STAY WOKE because he's ignorant. I'm not sure why he would think some of his comments were appropriate but as usual, she kept herself poised and sharp. I am thankful that she continues to represent African woman of color with dignity, respect and grace. She should be an inspiration to all men and women.
Clara Mupepi Jon Snow is more aware and in touch than you think. His wife of many years is Black. A Journalist always plays devil's advocate . Limited timeslot to elicit as much info as pos and make it understandable to all types of viewers.
@@katzwhite5962 He chose to answer in that manner. I don’t excuse people because of the race of the people they marry or associate with. I have dated white men and have plenty of white friends who have sometimes said ignorant things that need educating. With that being said, I hope you’re right but that video says otherwise.
@@cmupepi Hi Clara, thanks for the reply. You have a valid point about having to educate ignorant Whites who should know better and that their interactions with Black people does not stop them messing up. I was having the same discussion earlier with a White friend, swapping stories and she pointed out that she knows White people who claim to be non racist but in reality act otherwise. I still don't think Jon Snow meant anything negative but.....
Anyway, thanks for the feedback. It is good to talk about things. Stay safe out there.👍🏿
Years later, but Jon Snow is not an ignorant man, check his profile out, bless.
She is My spirit animal
Grace!
she is Amazing
she's so gorgeous
