- It's over man. The Toyota MR2 Turbo SW20 has skyrocketed in value in the past few years. If you want an MR2 Turbo in 2023, you better be ready to spend days of your life scouring the internet for a deal. These MR2 Turbos are picked over, wrecked, rusted, and beat, unless they're in the hands of a caring boomer who wants $50K for his prized SW20. GOOD LUCK OUT THERE.

I saw them getting popular and got a turbo for 2k in 2019 and bought a parts car in 2020 for it for like 500. The spyder is the next one to collect for cheap fun.
I sold my Spyder on BaT for twice what I paid for it, absolutely looking to get another one, favorite car I've owned
@@CollectorCarFeed mr2 spyder is so underrated its just as good as an s2000 on a touge
@@CollectorCarFeed just got my first spyder last year from copart, almost done swapping to 6 speed and 2zz turbo
@@CollectorCarFeed definitely pick one up from copart or iaai. So cheap
I used to own an MR2 with no power steering. Wasn't an issue at all since the engine isn't over the front axle. The feel of the connection to the road is incredible with no power steering.
Mans got shamed out of liking the roof mount intake.
….I dig em too😅
I really want a shark fin like in ridge racer 4
i remember reading a thread where a dude put the mr2 roof snorkel to test and the thing didn't do anything to cool down anything. so they're pointless. just for looks
I think they’re ugly excellent for the do luck ones. Those are nice especially if you have them with a black roof.
@@yourgrandmasjzexboyfriend lot of great car design comes from pointless shit.
When I was in HS a good friend of mine wanted the MR2 so badly, he never got the MR2 but his grandmother hooked him up with a Ford Pinto...yes a Ford Pinto. I was a 3 door(Hatchback) with faded silver paint, the paint basically looked like it was primer gray. It did have the 4speed manual transmission and very low mileage condifering it was 20 years old at the time.
lol- I’ve looked at about 75% of these on FB marketplace while searching for my first mr2. Nice getting feedback on listings I’ve actually looked at/considered.
Hey that's my Celica in the back on that ad for the red gen4 swap mr2!! Cool that we made it into the video. Sad to see his mr2 go though! Keep up the good work guys 👍
Did he really sell it that low? Thing looked nice. And NICE Celica
@@CollectorCarFeed he sold it for $7k actually, still a good price for a slick top with the desirable drivetrain. & Thanks I appreciate the compliments!
The only channel where the sticker plugs are actually content.
I got a 92 NA for $600 in April 2021. 240k miles, not the greatest shape, but it only needed a fuel pump to get it going. Sadly, it turned out that due to sitting for 6+ years, the piston rings in cylinder 3 were bad, and as I continued to drive it, it ended up spinning a connecting rod bearing. I plan to either engine swap or rebuild.
Dang I picked up a 93 NA for 500 that was also sitting for 6 years. Did the rod bearing fail out of nowhere or were there signs?
@@bobbetsagnut It was burning like a quart of oil every 30 miles lol. I flooded the engine with oil blowby in a walmart parking lot. The only thing that will really kill a 5s are weak/stretched rod bolts and worn out piston rings. I ended up buying a 3S-GE Beams from a 1998 Toyota Altezza and converting it with MR2 parts to work in my car. I'll make some videos about it eventually, engine should be in the car by the end of this month.
I don’t have any experience with the wind on a t top model but at least the sunroof Mr2 has some of the best wind buffeting I have experienced. I think the cabin c pillar vents relieve pressure when the windows are open
I can completely agree with the statement of "driving like a madman just to hear the engine sing". When mine was running, even with the NA 5S and automatic, it had such a distinct burble that made it so fun to drive.
... I need to get the gen4 3SGTE I built for it into the car and get the friggin thing running, I can only imagine what it'll sound like paired with an HKS BOV
I have an USD 91 turbo that I'm de tuning (making OEM). First thing us that the trim rubber in the back is avaliable on MR2 heaven as reproductions. 2nd the hood scoops looks great. I remember reading a. Enthusiast mag in 1990's with a red MR2 with a hood scoop being featured. That's whe. I GOT HOOKED.
Good to know the rubber is available again, but NO STOP those scoops are GROSS REEEE
Great video guys. Just some things, there were only a couple hundred turbo cars brought to the US in 94 and 95. Also I agree the jdm rhd version's do go for less, but they did come with the gen 3 3sgte which had 243 hp compared to the 200 for the gen 2. Also boosting the power on the gen 3 is also much easier than the gen 2 3sgte. Also in Japan they loved the tin tops and most of the imported ones are hard top which are lighter and more rigid. So if you can get over driving on the other side, the rhd ones are defianlty worth it.
i have a rhd hard top, and i wouldn't trade it for anything. great car.
@bananas please me too
Absolutely right. 👍🏻
Early JDM's (90-92) were actually gen 2's but tuned to 228hp instead of 200
i bought a sw20 in march 2022 for $8700 it had the camry motor in it felt like i overpaid a lil but the body was too clean repainted and no rust. came with kouki tails, RPF1s and BC coils. Now currently K swapping it.
The wing on the red mr2 with tom's scoop is a TRD wing with listing kit. Late 94 to 99 the mr2 jdm had gen3 engine with 245hp
Porsche Boxsters and Caymans are probably the only other small form, mid engine, sports car to have the same level of success as the MR2 and even those are hard to find at reasonable prices these days unless we’re talking early used models.
Oh boy I love Pontiac Fiero GTs
I bought a 91 auto N/A with the sunroof, ABS and power steering. I got it for 7k superrrr clean chassis only a small dent on the passenger door. I plan on doing a kswap and wanted a clean chassis for the swap.
I got lucky enough to find one for 3K last may- absolute dream come true
Got mine Feb 2021 clean title for $1900 170k miles N/A 5spd moonroof model running too lol like 7 miles away from my house and was in pretty bad condition mainly just the bumper but the prices have sky rocketed 🚀
My dad has a stock 1995 MR2 Turbo with only 29,000 miles. It’s factory black paint, and black interior. He has taken care of it for years and only drives it on special occasions
5k take it or leave it
I bought my 1991 NA Sunroof for $575 and bought my 2nd gen jdm 3sgte for $200 in 2012. I’ll hold on to it forever.
I have a 96 rev 4 GTS (JDM turbo) on 60,000 miles in Azure blue (very rare colour). Imported it to UK from Japland in 2006. Always garaged and only mods are lowered, adjustable suspension, breather mods and wheels. You'd have to offer me a lot for it 😂
I might let you buy my mk3 tho 😉
Tan interiors are great, very Ferrari style. I've owned a few MR2's and always wanted a red with tan leather interior
The mk4 supra JDM VS USDM case goes beyond the wheel being wrong. The whole AC system is much much MUCH easier to work on if LHD not being fkered with the steering column and the differential only came in the more desireable 3.13 turbo gear ratio in the US. (in Japan they are 3.75. and the Wangan runners of the day would often have to reverse-import the 3.13 rear for their turbos to hit that cliche 320km/h they always talked about back then at a decent RPM. at stock redline you're looking at just barely 300km/h with the JDM diff). The other issue was the USDM cars were ALL black or black on tan Leather seating front and back. Japan had many more models with cloth basic interior (which I prefer but that's got little to do with cost/value of provisional trims). 93 turbos in the US also came with 4 piston calipers up front before Japan's turbo models did. they went a year and a half with the crappy 2 piston fronts on turbo models. All other differences under the engine bay are easily changable and/or wear items that don't matter today (turbo specs, materials, etc)
Don’t own a mr2 but I do own a v6 fiero and I love it. Mid engine 5spd is the way to go
Bought my mint 91 turbo back in 2012 for 7k. Can easily double that today... Crazy.
Meanwhile in my country Malaysia it was the other way around. MR2 is cheaper than MR2 Spyder.
MR2 is around 15~20k usd
MR2 Spyder on the other hand, sits at 30k usd (it suddenly became super expensive in the past 2 years. Back in early 2020 its like 10 grand)
30k us is crazy for an mr2
Fuck yeah, this was my first dream car, 2 years ago, and then they became popular :(, still a fucking dope vid
Ye, cuz most good condition ones were destroyed by snap oversteer :D
IT'S NOT REAL RCR IS A LIAR
@@CollectorCarFeed Well, maybe he is a good driver :D
These used to be 3-5k a few years ago on the north east but were always a pile of rust and trash. You could never find one that wasn’t ready for the scrap yard
Recently bought a 91 MR2 base model for 4 grand excited; however, has transmission issues already bought the pilot bearing, release bearing, flywheel, clutch disc, and clutch plate. Hopefully, either one or another is the problem.
Mine has one of those intake scoops lol
Bought it like that and underneath the scooped messed up the damn paint so i kinda have to keep it on lol
But honestly the one I have looks much better than all the ones you see its a lot slimmer you gotta see it
The MR2 is the best mid engine car, even if I am a gm nerd.
Best car ever!!!! Great video!!!
I saw an in the weeds and broken type post of a 2nd gen turbo with a manual sitting around 68,000 miles for 2,700, post only lasted 3 hours before it went to pending
Fieros are written off but I’ve been dailying mine for a year and it’s reliable (enough) and plenty fun
Never been in an og mr2 but a buddy of mine has a 2zz swapped mr2 spider and it’s one of the coolest I’ve ever been in
Back in 2010 a friend of mine had multiple USDM MR2’s a few of them where just parts cars
Yes, the car @4:00 is indeed in the UK. ULEZ means Ultra Low Emission Zone and is specific to the capital, London. Cars which don't meet the required levels incur a daily charge for driving within it. The 'ULEZ free' wording in the ad is total BS. No MR2 Mk2, whether N/A or Turbo, is compliant. Any buyer who doesn't check the registration plate against the TfL (Transport for London) database is asking to have their pants taken down. There are other UK cities with restrictions but those are called CAZs - Clean Air Zones - not ULEZ. The difference is important and, if relevant, should be made clear in the ad, because they have different criteria. Only two, Birmingham and Bristol, currently apply a charge to private cars.
My dad owned 2 mr2's when i was little,we snap oversteered once thru the corner at 120kmh and i almost shit my self...Thankfully we just span out and didnt damage the car.
looking to buy one of these pretty soon
The poor man's Ferrari was the Pontiac Fierro, not the MR2.
Pick one up today for 1200$ with 250,000 miles but the special part about it is that it’s the 49 mr2 that came to USA
listening to you 2 talk shit while im at work is epic.
Ulez is ultra low emisson zone, UK govs way of saying they hate your car, if you want to drive it in to city you need to pay 12.5 € per day, they will be expanding the zone so you can only drive your car tax free in the backcountry
Yeah expect to spend 15k or so for a 91/92 in original ish condition. A bring a trailer 1994 turbo sold the other day for 17k and was a really clean 150k mile car. Markets not gonna keep exploding like over covid. Personally can't wait till hardtop ZZW30s are import legal they are so cheap in other markets.
FWIW the hardtop ZZW30 is just a Spyder with a detachable hardtop, you can buy the top right now but they're hard to come by and typically around $3k
Also don't overpay for UK market SWs they can get turbos for well under 10k still and usually have rust... As of recent I've seen some people trying to flip UK market cars in the US and it's hilarious considering what they sell for in the UK being next to nothing.
@@CollectorCarFeed yes I know! But you can get a whole car for that price in other markets... Considering I purely want one for a track toy and engine swap I can't see myself spending that on just a hardtop.
I imported mine last summer.. cheap
as mr2 guys I'm surprised the volt meter to boost gauge is all you said are the "tells".. Volt meter NA, boost gauge = turbo. 6500rpm tach NA, 7000rpm = turbo. 140mph cluster NA, 160mph cluster = turbo. On JDM cars, the MR2 G trim had a NA 3SGE with the Turbo tachometer (7000rpm) in the NA cluster. and Euro GTI trim had NA with volt meter but the turbo cluster everywhere else (7000rpm, and 160MPH)
Ssomeone should talk about the Celica GT-4 , people have literally forgotten about them I think. I saw a generation 4 model (St 185 I think) going for $10k and it had nothing wrong with it, it just needed to be reinspected and put back on the road. They would make a great time attack car
Add Nissan Maxima to collector car feed as well please!
The world's gone to absolute sh*t.
Gone are the days of the 500 dollar beater 😢
You can still get $500 beater whips. They’re just, not cool cars… 😢. Lot’s of horrid GM and Nissan garbage for $500 on marketplace if you like stuff like Cadillacs I guess
Just an fyi, MR2Heaven sell reproduction (black) versions of the rear roof-buttress rubber seal that Collector mentioned.
I can’t speak to the quality of it, no clue how long it’d last, but they do sell them
Curious on why non-ps is such a big sore spot?
My SW20 is a base N/A with manual steering & no ABS. I’ve driven a few others MR2’s and one of my favorite parts of mine is the manual rack.
Stripped for the race track.. less garbage
These MR2's are actually really easy to work on in the sense of figuring it out because it is a simple car in nature.
That 650$ red one also went to bear mountain! Wow. Wonder what was wrong with it potentially to sell that low
The advan wheels are 2 piece forged. The barrel is formed around the face/spokes soooo no fastners. It's just a design
Just to add up, the Intake Scoops only have a function with the rare TOM'S Airbox, otherwise they work counterproductively
Yeah it’s depressing, the sw20 is my dream car and the car market has been pushing it more outta reach
Pray for economic collapse 🙏
Even when stock, the ecu is the best upgrade for $1000.
😅 I just purchased the viper red 1991 mr2 turbo in Brooklyn... not for 20k tho... yes it is a sti wing lol
What do you think about V6 swaps? I own an NA that has been swapped to a 3VZFE. Definitely a better engine than the 5SFE
I'm just a sucker for the 3SGTE but I bet that's also a whole lot of fun. Glad it's not k swapped
@@CollectorCarFeed just got ahold of a 2GR. Going to do my first ever engine rebuild and build it for some nice NA power.
I love my 3vz swap. Did it 10 years ago, and now considering the 2gr for more power
I bought a non turbo one with 179k miles for 1800 two years ago
I like the idea of an MR2, but I'm not a good enough driver for one. I've already snap oversteered 1 too many times
I crashed mine and still want another one
28:26 Not the Fedora, Bro 😆
Yea i remember seeing base models for like 1500
Clean base is like $6k minimum now, market finally caught up to these cars
Only reason I like the top vent look is bc of the rs200 but I wouldn’t do it haha
Mr2 Gen 3, still affordable and available. Some people will shit of them today but will be praising them tomorrow.
my 93 mr2 has the tan interior... i like it alot.. lol
I guess Canada got the all red interior
Buy the 1998-1999 Beams redtop mr2 from Japan. Super realible . Great long term investments
Extremely more expensive lol
the mr2 at 21:15 is 5 minutes from my house lol
Sheesh, I know what's up. I'm living life.
3:59 I-I-IS THAT A SUPRA
Wow car prices are horrid in the US. I saw in your last gen MR2 video they were for sale at around $13,000. Here they are no more than £5000 and that if for a good one.
This title is not assuring for my eventual search for an MR2 (sw20)
Yeah bad news. Prices are all over the place though, just have to be fast, keep your money under your mattress
@@CollectorCarFeed Even in Japan, they are crazy expensive 😭😭
The toms racing intakes ARE functional, they increase airflow, yes, air is supposed to flow out the deck lid, but increased flow will help keep the iron block cooler.
Sure but god look at it
How does forcing air in the opposite direction of air flow "increase" the air flow?
It Does mess with the airflow so that's not good
Hey guys quick question, what do you guys think about LS swapped s13 (hatch) Honestly ?
The way 240s are priced now I don’t see the point, for the cost of the swap you could just buy a c5 corvette
@@CollectorCarFeed thanks for the reply! Im already building my 240sx since omoust a year and a half ago and its going great, great point of the corvette but i really love the 240sx i grew around them since i was a kid and chevys too so thats why i went with an ls swap and i want to boost it later ! Btw love the content you guys been doing awesome job, god bless
I live in Riverview, ain’t no way that looks like Riverview 🤣🤣😭😭
See I have the N/A but I got it for 1.5k so idk if I got a good deal or not
Me and the wife love you guys ❤
So you really don’t know why there are so many Toyota convertibles we’re bought in Florida in the late 80s/90s ❄️
Mr-2's have gotten so expencive. I have a 3rd gen and these cara are so damn expensive for a unmodified one.
@21:00 Got Jay Leno's chin spoiler.
Bro I been tryna buy one for a few years , seems like every on seems to “find another buyer” right before I’m suppose to meet them
They’re relatively uncommon and desirable, gotta jump on them
can u make collector car feed work for uk?
I fear your GDPR
now I want an MR2
I just can't imagine driving around and feeling good in an MR2 I paid $45k for. You could buy a Ferrari 308 for near that money if you want rear engine.
i walk out of my room after getting food and see 39:59 jump scared me and dropped my food day ruined
Lotus has the emira which is as close to an MR2 Turbo as you can currently buy. That being said your average consumer isn't going to have the funds to buy one like the MR2 turbo could've been.
Wait, you guys have a car search app?
Unfortunately the jdm ones are going for more, with no sign of coming down, but usdm supras, and rx7s for example are all more expensive than the jdm. Not the norm for mr2 tho.
Lol every jdm car i own i delete the abs, i had no idea someone actually would desire it.
It’s not a “poor man’s Ferrari” it’s not a poor man’s anything. It’s an MR2.
tan interior is trash but that blue interior kinda fire just give it a chance
I'm kind of the other way, red car tan gut is fine
People still sleeping on gen 6 celicas too 😴🔥
weird to see how cheap turbo's and mr2's are in the states,in the netherlands a NA sw20 project car will still sell for 6-8k clean exampled easily reach 15-20k,mr2 turbo's non running no plates sell for 12-15k,driving ones go for bout 15-20k,clean turbo's start at 30
24:38 that black one sold for $15,750 on CarsandBids. $26,999 my ass
“sw20 is a poor man’s Ferrari”
Honda NSX: 👁️👄👁️
The white 95 jdm mr2 is back up for sale, it looks worse and the guy who paid 17k for it is now asking 22.5k
