I was in the USCGR from 1991 - 1999. Those were such wonderful times and I truly miss them. I worked with amazing people that I would not have met in "civilian life". I am proud of my service and even more proud of my shipmates. These men and women are true professionals. Semper Paratus.

@@ObamaFromKenya I didn’t. I was on a buoy tender in Sitka, Alaska then to a small boat station in Rio Vista, California

She says 3 heavy Icebreakers really only 1 as the Polar Sea was decommissioned in 2010 The Polar Star is the only Heavy based in Seattle. The Healy is classified as medium icebreaker and is being rebuilt as it caught fire in Alaska in August 2010 and is also based in Seattle.

It's tragic what happened to the Polar Sea (WAGB-11) My first ship in 77. That and the Bittersweet (WLB-389). Both decommissioned. Its like I lost a limb.

@@willardwooten9582 I reported aboard for recommissioning after shaft repair in Todd Shipyards. Always felt I should be a plank owner since she was decommissioned first then recommisioned...lol. How do you know so much about her?

The USCG has a special place jn my heart. My dad served in the Coast Guard for more than 20 years. We lived in Honolulu, Portsmouth, Elizabeth City. I remember some of his cutters and a icebreaker: Chautauqua, Ingham, Westwind. RIP dad.

I served on the USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) 1991-1992. We were supposed to hit all Seven Seas on that cruise, but one of the shafts broke and we had to go back. We were 50 miles from the Geographic North Pole when it happened. I was pissed. I wanted to get my anchor tattoo for visiting all of the seas. I remember we had a NOAA crew onboard as well.
Seems that shaft failures aren't too uncommon on that ship, but then again, it's a hard worker! I'd love to go to the north pole or Antarctica on the Polar Star (as USCG Aux) but I doubt they'd find room with what must be a very in-demand mission!
Oh, man, you´ve lost a great opportunity to see the world! Bad luck! It reminds me of my first flight to Paris in 2007, but unfortunatelly was cancelled because there was a worker strike at the airport in Paris that day. Never had this chance again... lol
My father was in a Coastie in WWII. First assignment, North Atlantic patrol in the winter time in an illegal "Q ship." Per the Geneva Convention. It looked like a tanker, but it was equipped to blow subs out of the water. Then, off to the Phillipines on an attack transport carrier. He would have been involved in the invasion of Japan.
I wanted to join the Coast Guard, but the VN War was going on and the line was long to join, since Coasties did not go to VN.
Look up Operation Market Time. Joint operation with USN to block coastal smuggling of arms from north to soout. The USCG was in Vietnam. Retired CWO4. Northwind '82-'85.

I served aboard both the Polar Sea and the Polar Star.
US & Canada is going to need more ships and bases in Arctic soon before china moves in and fortify the Arctic

The United States is facilitating ... almost begging ... to have the Chinese moving into the Arctic by them not recognizing Canada's sovereignty over the Northwest Passage and declaring those (really tight) Straits are international seaways instead of internal waterways. They are allowing anyone to sail back and forth in the various Straits ... I don't know ... wanting to control it, themselves. Anyway, besides helping the Chinese, etc. to go wherever they please in the Arctic, the US opens up the possibility that other, adjacent and very similar waterways like the that Alaska Inside Passage to also be classified as International waterways. How'd you like to see People's Liberation Army Navy ships full of troops sailing up to Skagway? The US is also "all hat and no cattle" in this situation as their fleet of flogged out, baffed out icebreakers are patrolling nowhere and there isn't anything on the way to replace them. Meantime Canada is building and launching both Navy and Coast Guard ships .right now to tell them who owns the Northwest Passage. The America stance is unfriendly to an old ally, wrong-headed, bull headed and ultimately a real strategic problem for a future USA. Canada and the US won't be patrolling the Arctic together. Canada will be patrolling the Arctic against incursions from the USA unless America's policies towards Canada's borders change.
@Hans Tuber The Canadians HELD training exercises with the Chinese in the past and have since stopped doing that. The Americans used to include China in RIMPAC but have since stopped doing that, as well. Pompeo specifically stated that the United States does not recognize Canadian borders in the Arctic. So far, China has not done that but the American insistence in making the Northwest Passage an international seaway accessible to anyone, anytime facilitates a Chinese presence there. Canada's military, the big joke" as you say is building a fleet of 6 icebreaking patrol vessels (5000 Ton) to control those very waterways. Two are in the water. One is about to be launched, Three more to follow. The USA talks a big game but they have nothing at all to patrol the same waters and they won't for at least a decade if they start building tomorrow , which they aren't. Allies? Canada was at war in both World Wars for years before the US got around to committing.
I am American and I love my country but I agree whole heartedly with you man. The chinese are making a power play all over the world and its not good.they are an evil regime who bully every Asian country. I am 100% with our two countries coming together as a formidable opponent!

So can anyone tell me how many days a year does she actually break ice, days of travel back and forth to the antarctic, how many days pier side in Seattle and how many days in the yards? What other missions does she have other than Antarctica ?
Just a little fun fact. The Legand class cutters are the biggest “class” but no the biggest shit. The biggest ship we got is the USCGC Healy at 420ft. I did one 3 year tour on a WMEC 210.

What is a Fluctus?
Why does’t the US construct the nuclear power icebreaker?
Being in the Coast Guard, in our Acquisitions division, I've heard this question a lot. One overriding consideration is there is a treaty prohibiting nuclear in just about any form in Antarctica. A prime mission of US Coast Guard Icebreakers is supplying and breaking our the US McMurdo ice station. A nuclear powered USCG Icebreaker would be prohibited, by treaty, from doing that.

@@chrisnichols7607 Not to mention the whole issue of handling and safeguarding nuclear material. Would the Coast Guard send their personnel to U.S. Navy nuclear school, like the Navy produces for their nuclear powered submarines and aircraft carriers? The Coast Guard would need a HUGE cash infusion to make this a reality, let alone working around the international treaties.
5:27 the Russians have bigger ones powered by a nuclear reactor.

No, our only nuclear ships are carriers and submarines. It’s just not practical to build and service lesser ships with nuclear power.
