I've never made a physical planner because I am afraid I would spend more time decorating my planner thean actually doing the things that needed to be done that I put in my planner...any advice on how to avoid that

Well, when I started bullet journaling I would take probably 30 minutes to setup my whole month and I would just use a fineliner. With time, I started incorporating more doodles and other fun things until I found my style (what I do now). I recommend just starting with the basics, like use one fineliner and do it quickly, you really don't need all of the doodles we do!
I personally do my bujo like this because I enjoy just creating fun pages, it's really therapeutic for me! But if you really don't want to spend 3 hours on a theme, just use a pen to do everything and then you can try to create doodles and other fun things to see if you enjoy it. On my channel I have a flip through of my 2017 bujo (my first one) where you can see that how I started was very different than what I do now!

Instead of a planner, maybe just make it a little diary! You can still write your to-dos and what you want your day to look like, without relying on it as your main planning tool. Then you can doodle to your heart’s content
