  • Can an EV Electric Car Get to the Top of a Volcano? 3715m Above Sea Level!
Lets find out as we take a Fiat 500 All Electric Car to Mount Teide in Tenerife. Can this little EV prove that an Electric Vehicle can be the future of motoring? What will the infrastructure be like in the Canary Islands and will their be enough charge to get to the top and back as there are some steep climbs and winding roads that will surely hammer the battery and lower the range on the way up.

You've hit the nail right on the head. Everyone remembers covid where everybody was told, stay indoors etc. This is just another way for us all to be kept under control as the infrastructure just isn't there. Not forgetting how many people will actually be able to afford them?

Affordability really depends on what one needs a car for as there are secondhand EVs on the market for as little as £5k if all you need is a car for the average daily commute. Used prices have fallen dramatically this year as availability has increased. Previously long waiting times on new EVs kept used values high, but post covid manufacturers have increased their production, with 7.2 million EVs being sold last year globally.
The Covid lockdowns were a blunt tool to reduce the spread of the disease, but due to the government's reluctance to impose them, they were longer and costlier than necessary. That reluctance possibly caused 20k-30k more lives as the disease was allowed to spread for 4 weeks unabated.

I would imagine the cover is to keep the car cool rather than the rain off one's head while charging. Even in the UK, purpose built charging hubs do have canopies often covered in solar panels.

The friction brakes do not add to the charge into the car. Only the regen system does that. The car motor acts as a generator. A fuel car does NOT add extra fuel into the car as an electric car does. Be better if your passenger understood the physics of an electric car.

Brings back many Happy and Fun memories of my Friend and Myself travelling up Teidi in a Jeep Wrangler bright red and a Manual. Also we went up the cable car to almost the Summit of Teidi. The views from the Volcano were breathtaking. And then after that we came back down in the cable car and drove on to Pueto Del A Cruz. It was a Superb day out in a Jeep. Only costing us £ 50 pounds for the day, bargin. Glad You Gentlemen enjoy your road and deserved a Good pint of Alambra later on. A really Good High Quality movie to enjoy very much. Hello Lee, thanks for producing such an innovative CZcams. The 500 was originally designed as a basic, cheap auto for Italy's masses ... to get them moving after WW2. When this 500 reached the UK a couple of years ago it was priced around £20,000 ... but the price has risen considerably since then. Italy being a mountainous country I didn't expect this 500 to fail here ! Tell Dan that petrol engines can be just as responsive as electric power. Nothing sluggish with my Fiat 128 in the 1970s or Alfasud 1.5 (which had two twin-choke carbs) in the early 1980s. Sadly since then ever tighter emission controls have meant petrol engines have a more sluggish response nowadays.

Great video. We've just returned from Costa Adeje in Tenerife, and liked Teide so much that we went up the cable car on two separate days. The roads are brilliantly engineered and are a pleasure to drive on. A bit more of a challenge is the road to Masca. Narrow road with passing places and lots of hairpin bends. Now planning our next visit to the Canaries!😊

  • @Eric_G65
    @Eric_G65 Před rokem +2

Lee, I really enjoyed this one. Even though it was longer than most, it was so interesting the time just flew by. It's strange for you to have a positive EV experience.
I do know what you're saying about control and I agree that the goal is to get a lot of people to switch to mass transit but you can see, if you live on this island, I think your EV experience would not be quite as painful as it is where you live in the UK.
A few things, I noticed in this video, leaving that sunroof shade open the whole time probably has effected the EV's battery range. Leaving the shade opened means the AC would have to work a little harder and that would have an impact on draining your battery, especially on a hot day.
I love that selfie stick thing you use while in the car. It's amazing how it disappears but you can still see its shadow.
Too bad you didn't go on a day when the cable car was operating. I think it would have been interesting if you had gone to the top in the cable car. Maybe you'll make that journey again and go to the top?
I am surprised you didn't realize that going down from the mountain would increase your range. Dan's description of what's happening when driving down the mountain is incorrect. A petrol or diesel car will be more efficient when going down vs. going up but unlike fossil fuel engines, they won't actually refill the tank like EV's recharge the batteries when going down or breaking. Passively, all fossil fuel burning cars will burn fuel while moving. EV's can actually recharge while moving. In this one example, EV's would be superior, at least for going down the mountain.
Look forward to the next one.

A couple of things I take from this. It looks like most European countries are already more prepared for ev charging points, even in the most obscure places. The other is that Fiat make the best small cars, ice and electric as it turns out. I can vouch for their ice after discovering and buying an old 57 plate Panda 100hp. But I agree it would be nice to have choice and not be worried about being priced out of driving in the near future with the way the British government is going

Tazacorte, the town where I live, has just installed a couple of charging points by the town hall and there is another down in the Puerto to my certain knowledge.
I went to the Gran Telescopio de Canaries (GRANTECAN) last month on the Roque de Los Muchachos, the highest point on the island. The support vehicles were EVs and they had chargers for them there.

I live in Tenerife and have a 10 year old Nissan Leaf with 24kw battery. It has done 85000km and the battery has degraded to 85%, but it still gives me around 100km on a full battery and I can easily get around the whole island with a stop or two. You wouldn't have been charged at the cable car as almost all the street/car park chargers are free, a few in the popular tourist areas charge something like €2 for an hours charge, which gives 7kw per hour so not expensive. The free street chargers (and also most supermarkets) charge between 3 and 7kw per hour - the 8 at Leyroy Merlin in the south are free to use and give 11kw per hour - and most of the free chargers don't have a time limit so you can park and leave car all day. There are a lot of charging points around - my app shows almost 200 locations in Tenerife - and some of those locations have up to 8 charging points. There are a lot more new points appearing all the time. There are also quite a few 50kw fast chargers around, and a 60kw charger on the TF1 near exit 16 - but those can charge anything from €0.21 to €0.45 per kw. Have a look at the Electromaps app - that one shows them all.

Odd, not removed anything unless it’s a link which CZcams don’t allow.

As for the lava waiting....I live a few kilometres from Tajogaite, the volcano that erupted here on La Palma. I assure you, you do not want to get in the way of the lava!

Your experience with the charger is typical for any charger type that you haven't yet used. It's always a bit of a twat! 😂 I usually succeed in the end but the air does go a bit blue while I'm working it out. 🤣

Hi Lee. Great vlog by you and Dan. Thank you both. Quck question, all your EV vlogs ive noticed that youve paid by card or phone. Are there any options to pay with cash like normal petrol stations? Ive nothing against card or phone payments but i like to think there's the cash option available too. Or is this yet another step towards a cashless society?
