I dunno if this how it is in Chicago, but the excuse here in Kansas City on why that stuff happens is "short staff", which is a bunch of BS. Because no matter how "short staff" they are, doesn't mean the current staff has to be half-ass.

Chicago isn't the only place this is happening, I live in San Antonio and it occurs here often as well, and what the bus company doesn't understand is a missed bus can cost someone their livelihood, their home, their life in certain cases. Bosses don't care, doctors offices don't care, if you are late no one will take the excuse the bus didn't arrive especially when the bus schedule shows there was a bus scheduled. It's a serious issue that is costing people lot's more than mere time. If they can't service the scheduled lines then decrease the scheduled runs, stop lying. Just stop lying.

This. My state always sends a back up bus. For some of the most fastest cities to just not care is crazy as hell. They can be silent on the cuts they are making for transportation. While also the company you worked for saves on these budget account because you got fired because of the bus. I wrote a comment about the women in City of Dixon, RITA A. CRUNDWELL, she was treasurer over the city. She stole $54million from the city. Which made production stop for new roads, new city projects and layoffs to be had. She’s only serving 20 years in prison. While the city is still underway. She’s one of the top horse owners in America. I had to write a paper on her in class. So yeah. The avg person still takes the hit. Hate this system.

@RoySATX - Absolutely. I live in MN and as if it isn't bad enough that they are late or a no-show, it's worse in the winter and sub-zero temps. I started taking the train which takes more than 2x longer, but it runs every 10-15 mins. The downside to that is homeless and drug addicts use the train in the winter as a place to sleep and do their drugs. Threatening passengers for money, defacing the inside of the cars etc. It's a lose-lose situation. Thank goodness I retired a few months ago and don't have to deal with them anymore, at least not every day.

These aren't ghost buses. These are drivers taking themselves off of the tracker when they are running late. That's when you get the "delayed" response.
You will see the adjusted times when they place themselves back on it. It's worse at night/early morning because there are fewer drivers at those times and the ones working get backlogged.
A CTA driver told me this during the pandemic. That's why my husband and I bought a car. When you have to be at work at 7am, you cannot rely on the CTA to get you there on time.

They also don't pay people good money to deal with the public and by hiring people with felonies on they're backgrounds they don't have to either, but the quality of service will suffer. If any drivers are manipulating bus trackers they are doing so at the command of the CTA spokesperson lying to the reporter in this piece.

There is another aspect: When I lived in San Francisco, back in the 90's, dispatchers on the Muni bus system would "prioritize" lines. That meant that they would actually pull buses/runs from lesser lines, to fill schedule holes in busier lines. It was not uncommon fro some neighborhood lines to be stripped clean, to fill holes in other routes. Folks would end-up waiting for a bus that would literally never come---all to maintain a 2-minute headway on one of the major streets.

Your comment doesn’t make sense. Commercial/Entertainment jobs versus Public sector jobs are 2 separate categories.
Commercial & Entertainment jobs are funded purely by the market and they can literally end the moment people decide they no longer care to be entertained. So the pay will be higher because there is a lot more work to keep people entertained to make them give up their hard-earned money for it.
However, with Public Sector jobs they literally take years or decades to end due to being legislated into existence. Public sector jobs for the most part NEVER go away. They are cheap and abundant and easy to get, which is why they pay so low.

And then an arbitratir will probably give you your job back. However- if a unionized Government employee happens to piss off a politician, they're done. And the Union will throw up their hands and say "Sorry, nothing we can do." In my bitter experience over a 30+ year career in State Government, when an employee screwed up and legitimately deserved to be disciplined or fired, the Union had their back. But if an innocent, hardworking employee was getting screwed over by management, the Union was suddenly a paper tiger.

It's not as it sounds. People get sick. Emergencies happen. Another thing that happens is drivers work different schedules because transit is a seven day a week job. If you're driving a route that carries 5 people per trip every 30 minutes and another route that youre qualitfied on that carries 60 people evey 10 minutes, has someone on vacation or whatever, that driver is probably running the other route if he or she is qualified. And now the earlier route has no operator.

It's the same here in Las Vegas. While we aren't as large as Chicago and the surrounding area, our bus system is doing the same thing. I take 3 busses to and from work, unless the first bus going home takes more than 30 minutes to arrive, then it's 2. When I head to work in the morning, I can deal with the first bus being a little late because it's normally no more than 5 minutes, but sometimes the second bus will take 45 minutes and that makes me late especially when I have to wait for a third bus that takes more than 15 minutes. And they have the nerve to us to "Please plan accordingly".

The way it works is like this, certain routes are undesirable so people call out. Since these routes are undesirable when guys see the open work available they don’t pick it up. In my agency they split the work as overtime so you can do someone’s first half and someone else can pick up the second half depending on when you’re done or when you report. Other things to consider are traffic, routes running late due to odd occurrences like construction etc.. they also can get cut short and turned around midway through the route to supplement for the other portion of the route not getting service. There’s many variables that people don’t understand especially if an agency is understaffed. Also remember if there are new hires on the road they’re going to 1000% be late. It’s not always the bus operators fault, trust me we want to be on time. Supervision doesn’t do their job half the time and just lets the route go to crap. That’s why you see buses bunching after waiting 30 minutes for one. Can’t forget the co workers who will refuse to go around the bus in front of them because they don’t want to pick anyone up! Lol

Usually, as a rider, I've gotten the impression that those drivers not wanting to pick up more passengers are most likely at the end of their shift and don't want to be waiting around too long before they can drop the Out of Service sign and head to the depot. (Usually I've found that at one station here in Toronto, they tend to stop at the furthest bus bay from the station itself, which sucks for those with mobility issues.)

Not even from the US but this applies to everywhere. Public transit should be a priority. The more reliable and frequent the service is, the better it is for riders and the more riders you will gain. If it's easier to take the bus or other alternative than driving and it's relatively quick, more people will stop driving, which lowers traffic and speeds up service of buses, and it just keeps getting better. Quieter cities, better air quality, fewer car accidents, the benefits go on.

What they're not telling you: the UNIONS are the ones causing the problems. The constant call offs are defended by the union, the 'full time positions' are held by people with higher seniority, meaning only 50-100 of those 700 drivers will have a dedicated run. The rest are on the 'extra board', which means they have to cover the run when a regular driver calls off, which creates this situation. It takes an average of an hour to get a new driver in the seat. Those extra board people are also paid peanuts compared to the regular drivers, and are worked to the point where its an abuse of the 11 and 14 hour rules. Some of them are never home and spend most of their time working for half the pay of the regular drivers, which is why so many of them quit and leave rather than wait around for 20 years for the older seniority people to retire or die.
Then you have the traffic problems, and the problem of the people you pick up. Each stop takes 15 seconds on average. If each passenger pulls the handle on every street corner or bus stop, that time adds up, which leads to delays. The bus should stop at designated stops only, which would save time. But people are lazy and dont like to walk. And if you dont drop them where they want to go, theyll complain to the head office, resulting in possible termination. Only the worst of the worst drivers are allowed to remain on board as well. None of the good ones make it past the 5 year mark. And the union board is usually made up of a group of people who are friends or in a long standing group.

I'm originally from Cleveland and the CTA/Pace systems are a major part of why I moved here.
Many busses in Cleveland and suburbs run every hour outside of rush hour and on weekends. And you have to walk a distance in certain pockets just to get to where you want to go.
CTA and Pace have been ok for me so far and I've be all over the Chicago area for over 12 years.

The sad thing is they have a black man in charge doing such a disservice to his people. There is no way you can wait an hour for a bus and then the head of CTA tells a reporter that there is usually another bus within 3 minutes. If you hear the people, you would fix the problem. It couldn't be that many employees calling in sick on a daily basis. They are not fixing the problem because, CTA is profitting and the areas affected are predominately Black Americans. I have been riding buses all of my life, and I have seen how the system makes immediate when White Americans report an incident verses Black Americans regarding transit. To say it is only a small fraction of buses late is saying it is in urban areas and we don't care. What a pathetic excuse from one Black American to another.

Unfortunately... Money Talks!! The more a Zip Code contributes to the Tax base... the more services they get... such as Public Transportation... even though it isn't a Service they need that much!! Live in a Rich part of Toronto (though I'm broke as a Joke)... and see it all the time from Overnight buses running like Clockwork (even when the Ridership is Homeless People) to bus lines running as much as needed to make sure everybody is seated during their Trip... such is the Power of a Zip Code! Heck even a Food Bank from an illusive Zip Code... gives u access to an abundance of food! First time I went... expected 1... maybe 2 bags or Rice... they gave me a $400 haul... with Fresh fruits and all!!

It was more reliable to take a bike through the snow to get to work, I even made it from Harlem to downtown faster than the bus surprisingly. Bus drove passed me 2 minutes into Chinatown. That’s the 62nd bus btw on archer. Not everyone can ride a bike or even afford a car from all the state taxes, hope from all the taxes were being charged with will finally fix this issue.
