You should definitely complain to the local police, and also to the taxi company. You have lived in China long enough to know that there are criminal laws on the book in China for crooks, because there are crooks.
OMG, Luke, you must take the matters up with the Police to prevent such charlatans from scamming others. You will have to teach him not to do such scams and also save the reputation of the people of Qingdao. Thank you. Take care and stay safe.
Sounds like the taxi driver my wife and I used in Shanghai once to go to the F1 circuit. We could see it from the car window as we drove around it but he insisted we weren't there yet and proceeded to drive around the area four times before finally dropping us at the entrance. It cost much more than it should have done but luckily having a Chinese wife she called his company to complain and they reimbursed us the difference in cost. However in defence of the Chinese Taxi/Didi drivers these incidents are few and far between, most are very courteous, honest and helpful.
And there are some street smart tips to keep even as a local here. 1. Always call cabs from big companies like dazhong, haibo, or jinjiang. 2. Avoid taking cabs whose driver couldn't speak Shanghai dialect. Obviously this may not be applicable nowadays. 3. Don't use your transportation card to pay the fare, and don't give him cash in a dim environment as he might give you back fake notes. These are still useful for foreigners, especially tourists. Locals are more like to book cabs or ubers though Apps. It's very unlikely to get scammed. Or if they did take the detour, it's very easy to get refunded by the platform in a sec since the App keeps track of your route during the trip.
I'm sure this happens all over the world with taxi drivers scamming tourists. Happened to me in Naples, Italy. Driver took me the long way round when destination was only round the corner (I didn't know that I was in 2 minutes walking distance) 😳
It happened to me, in one very early morning a few years ago, on the way to SFO from downtown Santa Rosa, a white female driver scammed me, i couldn't do anything about it, but I clearly remember what that woman had done to me🤮🤢
Me too in Japan, the location is only no more than 500m from the bus stop (sky resort) and i did not know that so i drove a taxi, the driver did not tell me how near it is.
Just lodge a report to the local authority. I did it once at Shanghai, 2days later I received a call from the authority apologize to me. And they compensate me with 3x the taxi fare I paid for, immediately to my Malaysia bank account. Must teach this goon a lesson.
Qungdao is a beautiful city. I hope this experience does not put you off revisiting by probably joining a tour. Tourists are fair game fir scammers all over the world. You should complain to the taxi company. The driver’s phone number may be useful
😂As a girl I’m always being extra careful with taxi drivers! Always have the map saying the direction out loud and talk to the phone as if you are going to see someone!
Yes, Luke, make a police report or a report to local communist party head. They will handle your complaint. And while you're at it, viral your report on weibo to shame that taxi man.
the Didi app has clearly stated the price and destination information, and the payment is automatic after confirmation. Therefore, you may have taken a private unregistered taxi.
As a local person in Qingdao, my advise is that Don't take airport taxis to take DiDi or the metro. And Qingdao is indeed a beautiful city; you can go to ShiNan or ShiBei district from what I see u are far away from the center of Qingdao. Don't let that shameless man ruin your holiday.
That's sad that you got a bad greedy cabbie, so there are rotten cabbies everywhere, even in China. To be fair the majority of cabbies are decent people doing their bit to earn a living.
feel bad for you man, perhaps i've lived in china for too long, but its a fairly known unspoken rule to not trust airport taxis. they always take the long route. also its easy to take advantage of foreigners...
i lived in Qingdao for 4 years and it was a wonderful time! But yeah, i once got that bad experience with a taxi from the airport, when i already knew my way, and he started driving on the opposite direction, and i started complaining and he was pretending not to know the direction and like calling someone to ask (it was a main big avenue, and i understood all etc). He saw my foreign features and thought i could be trolled. He was wrong. I payed him half of what he asked for. If you get a taxi in the airport, in the taxi queue, they give you a paper with his car data. So i topd him i would denounce him and i was only paying what i had always paid from the airport to my house for years... But hey, that was my only time in 4 years. Maybe it was the same dude that scammed you 😅
If I got on an airport taxi in the UK, and told the driver take somewhere nice within 30mins, I'm sure the driver will be the sane...Kachingg. He's taken you for a ride!
Call the police, haha the drive will be punished. There’re still some 黑车 around train station or airport, that some illegal drivers without taxi licenses will attract travelers enthusiastically. Always get away from them unless you have absolutely no choice. Find a taxi at official taxi stop, or call a Didi. Usually they don’t dare to do this, and complaints will be quickly handled. ❤❤❤plz enjoy your trip. Police will handle this kind of shit. 😂
I visited Qingdao (Tsingdao) at 2018, it is a beautiful city with many European architectures, the seafoods and Tsingdao beer is so excited. I feel sorry that you met a bad guy and take you to unknown place
According to the restaurant name, I researched in the map and found out the taxi driver took you to 广顺兴(利群广场店), which isn’t his decision but you let him stop when you don’t want to go further more. I think he was trying to take you to Mount Lao(崂山), which is the most famous tourist attraction in QingDao. Every tourist will go there if they decided to go to Qingdao. I checked in Didi. It will cost you 130-290 rmb, depending on the type of car you took, plus expressway toll fee. So, I think the taxi driver didn’t scam you. You may not understand each other well and you are just not satisfied with what the taxi driver thought was beautiful in Qingdao. That’s all. Here are some reminders for foreigners traveling in China: 1. Taxi is usually 20% more expensive than Didi, which received lots of bonos from the app and didn’t need to pay lots of expenses which taxi should. 2. Don’t believe the Urban Legend that Taxi drivers know where there are good restaurants and beautiful places. They are low-income workers, which didn’t often go to fancy restaurants and beautiful places. BTW, what they thought are beautiful doesn’t often meet your expectations. 3. Please don’t expect the taxi driver to understand everything you said in English or in Chinese which you may think is good enough to let locals understand. In China, people who can understand foreign languages will get a better work than driver. So most people who are working in the service sector didn’t speak English, except for those who are working in the places targeted to foreigners. Try to use a translation app, which works better than your English or Chinese. 4. Do more homework before traveling to any place. You should make the decision where to go and where to eat. Otherwise, please don’t blame others when their recommendations didn’t meet your expectations. They are drivers, not your tourist guide.
Well before the journey he said he will take me to 城阳 and he kept talking about that area en route, which is where i went, it seems thats where he planned to take me. It cost 101¥ and was about 45 minutes compared to the taxi driver taking over an hour (on a toll road). And yeah i spoke chinese which he definitely understood btw
Sounds like any taxi in any country when they see an "innocent" tourist. In fact what they really see is a walking bag of money on two legs 😉😉😁😁 It looks as if (most?) of those shops are closed outside the tourist season?
I also had the same experience with Bangkok airport taxi...they just want to ignore the meter and charged us a value..even when you're going back to airport from the city..they don't want to use the meter.
