What makes a commercial banker successful? How can I prepare for a new commercial banking role? What should I focus on when I first get hired to develop my sales ability and achieve lending success? In today's video, we will cover your first 90 days as a junior relationship manager or commercial banker. While you may feel pressured to try and sell early on to generate business, investing the time upfront to learn about your lending products and how to "sell" to prospects is essential to increasing your chances of success. In your first 90 days, there are six steps;
1) Learn your product first - what types of loans can you provide? What industries or market segments is your bank most competitive in?
2) Identify dealermakers - build relationships with senior bankers in your division so you can attend their meetings and learn how they sell/communicate with business owners.
3) Build A Relationship with Risk Management - Your credit adjudication team is a critical relationship to develop, invest time upfront and listen to their perspectives.
4) Practice your sales techniques on your existing client book
5) Build your sales confidence and style, what type of lender do you want to be?
6) Get out in the marketplace and start selling - where can you find deal flow as a lender?

What if you don't drink, I'm comfortable with people drinking but I don't anymore, hopefully not a turn off to potential clients
That shouldnt be an issue. There are other ways to spend time with your COIs.
With regards to connecting with lawyers and accountants, any particular titles we should look for? Ie audit, M&A advisory, etc
Love the health tips at the end lol
Focus on corporate lawyers with a focus on commercial/M&A law. For Accountants I would target either senior managers or junior partners who are looking to build their own network of lenders a they become more client facing in their own organizations.
What and where can you find the skills to start in commercial lending?
You can find them on this channel! LOL Check out some of the other commercial lending videos on how lenders look at companies.
I'm overwhelmed and I haven't even got the job yet lol. I guess that's the first step

Yup! First step is getting the job, good luck with your search!
Are commercial bankers expected to pay for these informal meetings out of their own pocket?
Great question, most commercial banks give relationship managers a corporate credit card to pay for these coffee meetings and lunches. You usually have a limit of $1K per month for BD related expenses (the limits change based on the size of the bank and your seniority).
