  • Michael Buerk presents the Nine'o'clock News on Thursday 3 April 1997, the day the Labour manifesto was published for the general election. Reports:
    1) Robin Oakley on the Labour manifesto and the reaction.
    2) Niall Dickson on what Labour is proposing for public services.
    3) Peter Jay talks about Labour's economic policies.
    In the later section:
    4) Anne Perkins's campaign newsdesk includes a tour of John Major's battlebus, the 'chicken' sent by Conservative Central Office to shadow Tony Blair (unsuccessfully), and the latest polls. Also the Grand National is due to be run on Saturday (it wasn't...)
    5) Peter Sissons reports from the East Midlands on the election issues there.
    6) Robin Oakley discusses the state of the campaign.

I love the transition when the camera zoomed out of the Coat of Arms to the small newsdesk. The news desk shown in that transition is the real BBC News studio. The rest was simulated to be huge with a great big glass structure (which was really CGI) as it would present at the beginning of nearly every BBC News bulletin in those days. The colour of the set during the Election Campaign would've made the whole set deemed as a fake if it continued with its normal ident.

This was a key problem with the so called virtual set. There was nothing you could do with it. ITV News 2004 green screen look was much more flexible, with the presenters able to deliver news digests standing or sitting. This was not really virtual, more just computer generated opening with a bit of real set and presenter pasted in.

Strange, there's two other headlines away from the election and neither gets mentioned!

'Cos I didn't record them. That's why the picture jumps at 13:43

Stuart Wheeler at 19:29 - willing to be corrected, but was he also a Conservative donor at one stage?

He gave them £5m in 2001 so yes, a bit.

@@DBIVUK thanks for your helpful reply :) I'm sure I saw him on another clip from 2003 when Iain Duncan Smith's leadership was in serious trouble, I think that's where I previously recognised him from.
