    Super helpful, Ben. Thanks. For your next "Tip Time" in this series, it would be great to hear your thoughts on pop-up timing relative to steepness. We all learned to feel for the board to "catch" the wave and then give a couple extra paddles to make sure we've caught it, but for steeper waves that can often results in a pop-up that's too late... either sucking you up to the top of the wave (missing the wave of going over the falls), or resulting in you dropping too far down the wave before popping up and loosing all that momentum. Watching your more critical takeoffs (and those of most advanced longboarders), you pop up almost before the "catch"... like you're anticipating it happening and the lift of the tail of your board is the cue to pop up. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thx

    I think the idea of pushing your chest down when the wave is picking you up is going to hold people back when they get to steeler drops, especially if people inteptet it as getting their head/nose down to the board (which they probably will). OMBE have alot of good stuff on the oreo method which is kind of converse to this, albeit, with a longboard you're more likely to be trying to plane into the wave.

    Thanks for the insight, Ben! Congrats on the win!
    I’ve been working on angling the opposite way I want to go then turning in the opposite direction and find that I lose speed and end up doing a bottom turn most of the time instead of building speed and staying higher on the wave. I’d love to see you talk about how to go about those early turns since you do them so smoothly!

    Ben. The it’s ok if water comes over the front is a great tip. These little observable things really help.

    Great video, my favorite thing that you do is provide subtle details like it being ok for a bit of water to flow over the nose.
    A great next step from this would be positioning and timing for dropping into the pocket of a wave.

    I'm sure you know that the 'nose-dive' has been called 'pearl, pearling or pearl-diving' in California for at least my 63 years surfing. I should know, I'm experienced at 'pearling on take off'. I always enjoy your stuff.

    Great vid, thanks! When you nose diving paddling do you try paddling harder to take it out? or trying with a chest move?

    This is really helpful thanks. Just trying a longer board and really enjoying it. It’s noticeable how you seem to catch even quite small waves. I find I miss them even when further forward on the board and paddling hard. Might this be about dropping the chest and paddling harder earlier?

  • @briankim57
    @briankim57 Před 2 lety

    Thanks for the fantastic tips. Regarding the pop-up timing, I would like to catch waves earlier cause I assume that it helps slide down longer and generate more speed. But I'm not sure this idea is correct. Also, I miss waves often while practicing catching waves earlier. Is it just a paddling skill, or are there other tips to catch the waves early?

  • @tg5834
    @tg5834 Před rokem

    You can get lots of extra speed paddling in by pushing off another surfer paddling for the same wave beside you.

    Hello Ben 💥, Thank you for your GREAT tips: If I may make a suggestion !
    All your videoes are 90% showing you noseriing or walking to the nose. Even your videos about paddling show you doing your nose riding.
    Bottom turns and cutbacks or whatever is the topic of any video, is showing you nose riding. Essential footworks are never shown in detail. So , think beginners and intermediates like me are left behind and advanced ones usually don't watch these videos. They already know how to do it.
    THANK YOU !💥💥💥

    Awesome tips, thx Ben. Interesting that you mention pushing into the board while paddling into a wave. This seems to be the opposite to OMBE surf - oreo biscuit reference of arching the back. Is this because of the difference between longboards and shortboards? or simply adjusting to the wave you are dealing with on the day.

    • @Nandox7
      @Nandox7 Před 2 lety +2

      Oreo biscuit is done at a different time. Is that split second right after you feel that you already entered the wave and you do it to speed up, rather than popup right away.
      If you do it and you haven't properly entered the wave you just going to stall and loose speed.

    • @phonyspirit
      @phonyspirit Před rokem

      They also pick up different stage of waves. Short board usually need steep wave to take off.

  • @rctrix9063
    @rctrix9063 Před rokem

    From my observation beginners and intermediate surfers try to catch waves at the top. I think it's a perception thing that even experienced surfers tend to try.
    It's easier to catch a sloping wave than a steep wall but some part of every wave is sloping. That part is usually lower down the wave. I don't believe most proficient surfers know they do this.

    Tx Ben, great Vid :) Question: what do you do with your feet when paddling in ? I and a lot of other people lift their feet in the air to get momentum. But I'm not sure if this helps on all waves, sometimes the wave hits the feet before the pop up.

    • @BenConsidine
      @BenConsidine  Před měsícem

      It depends - I usually find feet up IF we're using them correctly to geenrate drive and momentum to be no problems, for people I'm getting to use the toes to press off from on the pop-up ill ensure their toes come onto the board before popping up to set the toes in the right position. In steeper waves where we don't need to generate so much speed and power with the paddle, it would be more ideal to leave the feet lower :)
