The last thing I ever expected to hear you say was that you surfed Long Beach, New York. That’s where I live. 😊 The surf leaves much to be desired. The best thing I did for my surf progression was to go to a flatter rocker board. The high rocker longboard I had was holding me back from getting into these mushy waves here. Hope to see you out in our lineup one day. 🙏

You’re videos are great. I just got back into surfing after about 15 years and I wish I had all of these tips when I was young. Not that my younger self would have listened anyway.

This was great information for beginners and intermediate surfers! if I can make recommendation for educational purposes. Have the boards standing upright and lined up against a wall, this would really show their differences standing side by side, also have a board rack to put the board on in order show the rocker, tail and nose shapes (good camera angle). Thanks, I wish I had someone pointing this out to me when I was a kid:)

After my last question regarding if I bought the right board, I bought a wider board (a Torq the Don XL 9.0) with a bit more volume and wider tail. Turning the board is a bit harder but it is way more stable, thx for the advise.

This would explain why my nose riding hasn't progressed. My current board (9'3 with the wide point towards the back and square tail) is definitely not suited to my 4 years of surfing experience or the waves I surf (mushy at lot of the time). I was thinking of getting a new board anyway so it's nice to know I can now buy one closer to my skill level (intermediate) and save my current board for when I'm up to advanced level surfing. Thanks so much for breaking this down! Do you have a recommendation for a middle width longboard?

Great video and so true. After years of surfing, i have accumulated all of these different boards. However, i started with a pin tail 9 foot performance and wish i had started with a wide middle with rocker 10’. My current fav is the apex by cj nelson 9’ wide back

After 2 lessons I was catching most of the waves , making some small steps fore/aft and making shallow turns down the line. Instructor advised against buying a foam top. Instead she recommended something between 9-10 foot “ buoyancy in the center” wider nose and square tail. The first board you described seems like this style.

Hello from Manhattan Beach, CA…. I’m returning to surfing after. 10 year break and want to buy a new board…. Are your boards made by South Coast? If so what model is the red (beginner intermediate) board. I can get SouthCoast shapes here in CA at CJ Nelson .

And that model is the Nova Stella by South Coast surfboards - such an unreal board, makes noseriding super approachable and stable, good amount of rocker in the board as well so turning is nice on that one 🤙🤙

Love your videos. I've got a question if you don't mind. I'm not a longboarder, though i'm tall (1,92/82kg) and I love the mixed styles of the long- and shortboard techniques. Now i've bought that 7'10" 21" 2-7/8" big rocker pointed nose board. It's really narrow and goes with 3 fins. My question is: is it possible to noseride these kind of boards or they are made only for carving, and what would you recommend to me to be able to ride it really well? Will be happy for any answer, thank you. 😊

  • @hennnnerz
    @hennnnerz Před 8 měsíci

Board that works in lots of conditions => more practice time
    - wide point in centre
    - rail outline straight
    - more width in nose than wide point back
    - maintains speed when stepping up
    - works easier in fatter/shoulder when stepping to nose
    - no big hip = easier to pivot
    - more rocker
    - less bogging rail
    - prevents nose diving when on the nose
    - wider nose and tail helps for general stability
    - >> sharp rail at back third
    - or narrowing tail can be better for advanced surfer
Wide point at the back: for more critical wave position, turns in pocket, walks in pocket with lift under nose. Designed to be surfed in pocket.
    - wide point at back, in back third
    - reduces swing weight of board
    - easier rotation of board
    - narrow nose
    - closer to face and tighter into pocket when nose riding
    - more lift under nose
    - less likely to catch outside rail in critical turns
    - more responsive
    - good for carving
    - less rocker, flatter outline
    - board goes faster, carries speed better
    Pintail:
    - carve with speed
    - maintain line and hold drive on bigger steeper faster waves
    Square tail:
    - sometimes skip out if pushing too far or on wave with speed and power
    Tail kick up:
    - allows you to nose ride better
    - holding/locking into pocket
Pintail for bigger/faster conditions, holds line
Pig shape, wide point back, critical transition surfing e.g. point breaks
Beach brake board: wide point in middle, good moves in sub-par waves.

Hey - it really depends on a few different things. From the sounds of it though 10ft and 22 wide is fairly long and narrow, may be more of a high performance board and not something I would necessarily start with.
