    i just had a sedated endoscopy today! now that it's all over, i'd say the worst parts had to be the anticipation and then ripping off the i.v. bandaid once i got home. i had propofol and after a few jokes with my dr and nurses i was just gone. i have zero recollection of the procedure, was woken up with a capri sun and was on my way in hardly any time at all. in fact, i walked (not alone) over a mile home. so, all in all i got peace of mind from my results and a free nap. if anyone is here because they are nervous, try not to be, get the drugs if you aren't allergic (it's fun) and think about what you're gonna eat later! you will do great :)

    it's really great that the staff where so understanding, that really helps. I have a huge fear of needles, i mean i do take them when i have to, but it's like the most nervous thing for me, i get sweaty my heart rate rises and the worst part is that everybody thinks that it's some stupid thing and i'm making a big deal out of it, and it's really annoying cause they dont seem to get that it's a real phobia...
    and the last time i had to take a needle was a penicillin a couple of months ago and it was the first time i was taking it so they did the allergy test and nth showed and i took the shot and 10 seconds after it was done i went into anaphilactic shock and i literally thought that i was gonna die or like my brain was gonna explode or melt or sth, it was the most horrible experience of my life and after everyone is still acting like "it's nothing, get over it..."
    sucks...

  • @lakesandfells
    @lakesandfells Před 4 lety +4

    I had this procedure today and it really wasn't bad at all. The worst bit for me was the spray at the back of the throat which tastes pretty awful. You do gag a little bit as the camera is put down your throat, but it only lasts a moment. I was sedated, which just makes you feel relaxed but still fully conscious throughout. If I was to do this again I think I'd just go for the spray only. If anyone is going to have this procedure I'd say don't worry, it's absolutely fine, I've had no side effects at all and was back at work an hour or two later. I've had no nasty side effects, not even a sore throat.

  • @rowiko
    @rowiko Před 3 lety +2

    I couldn't agree more!
    I watched your video a few days after I had my sedated endoscopy earlier this week (should have watched it before 😁!). The procedure itself was very smooth and over before I knew it. No discomfort and no gagging at all, which I had been worried about. It turns out that being so chilled out by the sedative totally did the job it's designed to do. The main anxiety I suffered was in fact the anticipation of the procedure, and not the procedure at all!
    The two things that were a bit annoying actually occurred after the procedure. One was when lying in recovery and not being sure when I could start swallowing properly again, slightly afraid I might choke if I do, because my throat still felt numb. Maybe some better explanations by the staff could have avoided that.
    And the other was an annoying tickle in my throat, causing me to cough, about two or three hours later. But after drinking some tea it got better very quickly, and then it went away before I knew it.
    But in summary: Anyone who needs to get an endoscopy, sedation is the way to go! No reason whatsoever to be worried about it!

    Hi Claudia (tw emetophobia) I just wanted to say I had the same thing done a few months back and my experience was very different. Obviously if anyone is having it and is scared maybe don't read this but I feel the need to prepare some people for what happened to me. I had the sedation but it failed completely. I was completely awake and aware of what was happening and I also have very severe emetophobia so you can imagine how difficult this was for me. It was painful and I gagged and retched the whole way through the procedure and was incredibly distressed and my heart rate went up to 130bpm so my mum couldn't come in and comfort me and I struggled a lot with flashbacks and anxiety attacks afterwards. I don't know whether I was immune to the sedation or they didn't put enough in but this was the result and I know in 99% of cases it goes like how you said and most people aren't aware of what's going on and don't remember it afterwards but this is my experience just to warn anyone xx

I hope you can start to go out and really concentrate on overcoming this, because it leads to stagnation to let this limit your life so severely. Anyway, I'm a fan, and I hope to see you do more feminism videos, even though I'm on the opposite side, lol! I just like your videos I guess. ;) You just have a very attractive personality.

  • @Yvaia
    @Yvaia Před 8 lety +16

    I had it without any anesthetics, with just the numbing thing and it was quite an unpleasant experience. Nothing too bad, but just uncomfortable, because you could feel a foreign object going down your throat, into your stomach, which is an experience on itself. Also (emetophobia tw?) it involved a lot of gagging which is never pleasant.

    I had an endoscopy to look at my throat about a month ago, but they went through my nose. The numbing spray is soooo strange! I absolutely hated it because one of the problems I was having was difficulty swallowing, so once my throat went numb and I actually couldn't swallow I became so anxious omg.
    For the actual procedure I was really scared, one because my friend told me it was awful, two because I was worried they would find nothing wrong with me, three because I was worried they'd find something WORSE than expected and I freaked out the first time the doctor tried to put the tube in my nose.
    But after that it was groovy, I got to see my vocal folds and finally be put at ease at the prospect of having vocal nodules, even though that's not what I was there for I've just always been paranoid as a singer I can't help it!
    I was still super upset afterwards and cried in that car but that's because it cost me $370 out of pocket and they didn't even find a problem he just said it was "probably reflux" and gave me a prescription and I was down $370 and I'm poor as hell mannnn
    But I freakin loved seeing what the camera saw it was so fun!!!

    I had an endoscopy last March and prior to it I was a nervous wreck at the idea of them putting that tube down my throat into my stomach and it showed on the heart monitor during pre-op. My pulse rate was going crazy, but my gastro doctor was very kind and told me it would be all right and over before I knew it. I was given propofol in the actual surgical room and felt a wonderful sensation of warmth and then I was out and the next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery. I did feel a strange sensation down in the lower portion of my esophagus and then found out they had taken some samples to look for a certain kind of bacteria, but after I drank a little and ate a bit that sensation went away. All in all, not a bad experience at all, but I can't imagine doing it without sedation of some kind.

I had the throat spray which freezes your throat so I couldn't swallow... that wasn't great. Then when the camera was pushed into your mouth as soon as it hit my throat I was wretching. Ultimately the examination had to be done and showed no bad symptoms... but it was not a pleasant experience. I did gag multiple times throughout. I'm sorry to paint a darker picture but I think my experience and yours are at polar ends of the spectrum. It was rough

    I had this too. I had the throat numbing spray, it was really weird! Not very nice though.. When you can feel it scratching against your insides and gagging in front of loads of doctors ew! But yeah the spray thing is weird, like kind of feels like your throat is closing up in a way. :')

  • @kayla6684

    it's so interesting to me that they gave you the option of using a mild anesthetic or just something to numb the throat! i had an upper endoscopy 3 years ago and my doctors put me completely under through IV sedation. i live in the US though, so i wonder if that's got something to with it? just different medical practices? i also have an extreme fear of vomiting/nausea, so i was very scared to have the procedure done, just like you. but i'm glad you had a pleasant experience and i hope you continue to do well in your physical/mental health journey!!

    When about did you have this procedure done? I have an appointment tomorrow, you said you were given a mild anaesthetic through canola. NHS has crashed recently and no ones announcing it. I doubt I will be given anything. I have been waiting for a hernia operation, and they have come up with every imaginable excuse not to operate, I was due to have an operation on the 6th of Sept, 2 excuses I still haven't seen the anaesthetist yet and he has to clear me first for the operation, second most stupidest excuse I have heard, theres no guarantee that the pain will go away after the hernia repair. I already had my pre-op on the 8th of August still waiting. I had a hysteroscopy today (without any sedatives) I took my own liquid morphine in and took it before the procedure. I have no idea what will happen tomorrow. But thank you for this wonderful video. It has calmed my nerves quite a bit.

    • @ClaudiaBoleyn
      @ClaudiaBoleyn  Před 8 lety +5

      Deep breaths my friend. You can't change it by worrying and if you remain as calm as possible and try to relax you will make it easier because you'll be less stressed when it comes to it. You have to give yourself the best chance at being calm. Honestly, it is incredibly quick. Like I said, I was asleep throughout. There was no pain whatsoever. It was the panic beforehand that was the worst part. Try to do something that you find calming. Read a book you like, watch a film you enjoy, draw, write, look up a person you admire. I'll admit I was exactly the same as you before my procedure but from experience I can tell you it will not be as bad as you think. In fact it will probably be a huge relief because you'll be able to see what's wrong! Also when you've done it you feel great. You can feel so proud of yourself! I have complete faith in you. I know you can do it. xxx
