    I've had it both ways, awake and asleep. Can't beat sedation, but truthfully, it wasn't so bad without. Just uncomfortable, with some pressure like gas. Certainly not unbearable. And it's true what they way, the prep is far worse than the actual procedure.

  • @Dancerstar852
    @Dancerstar852 Před 5 lety +27

    I had my endoscopy today, and it was super easy. I had mine with sedation, and I HIGHLY recommend if you are going to have an endoscopy to have sedation if you are nervous about the procedure.
    In the procedure room, they made me lay on my left side, and one of the nurses sprayed a throat numbing spray in my mouth. It didn't taste great, but it was tolerable. My doctor gave me Versed to make me less anxious and sleepy, but it did absolutely nothing (I was talking and having conversations at the max dose lol). So they had to call in the anesthesiologist to give Propofol. The anesthesiologist said she just gave me a little of it, and I was completely out.
    Then I was in the recovery room!!! No recollection of the procedure at all! I was just a little groggy and tired afterwards, but it was completely fine!
    Super easy procedure!!! If you guys have any questions, please ask me!

Some people do it without the sedation, but if you're nervous definitely ask to get the sedation. After they give you the sedation, you'll go to sleep, then you'll wake up, and it will all be over.

      You can ask for it. They will push you to just use the throat spray but it's your right to ask for sedation. If you don't say anything they'll just use the throat spray obviously. It's not done automatically.
      I've been reading horror stories about the endoscopy done with just the spray so I did say to the nurse when booking my appointment that I wanted sedation. I was sent a form for the anesthesiologist for me to fill in, which I sent back to them. Having the procedure tomorrow morning and I'm so nervous.

    It sounds very funny for the procedure like endoscopy. For example, in Lithuania (Europe), you will take 10 minutes for this procedure, just arrive, go onto special bed, open your mouth and into YOU being alive the probe will be put into your stomach for two minutes, that's it. You get up from a bed, and go home after 10 minutes before you arrived the same day.

    • @blackiesun
      @blackiesun Před 3 lety +2

      If you only get the throat spray you can leave immediately but in this video they're showing the procedure done with a sedative prior to it. Patient can choose to be sedated if they want to and with that they have to keep you under observation for up to 2 hrs after the procedure is completed.
      Usually they push you to just have the throat spray. I did say I wanna be sedated. Having it tomorrow morning and I'm so nervous. First one. I'm in the UK.
      Sedation isn't general anesthesia. You are awake but sleepy. It just helps to relax. With some people they can just fall asleep but they're not unconscious like with general anesthesia. Sedation is still carried out by an anesthesiologist.

    • @blackiesun
      @blackiesun Před 3 lety

      No. You can have the procedure done without sedation, which means they will just use a numbing throat spray and won't need to inject you with anything. This is the default option. You have to ask for sedation if you want it. Sedation means you have to remain longer there after to be observed (a couple of hours or so) and be accompanied home and so on. With just the spray you can go home straight away and do whatever you like. I was told that the spray only isn't bad but who knows. Some people say they were just slightly uncomfortable and some have horror stories. I chose sedation for my endoscopy tomorrow morning. I'm just too nervous. I also don't wanna gag.

Well, from what I have read and seen on the videos I am certain they tell you afterwards! As they can't really do anything right there and then, if it was for a down below (your bum) then I know for sure, they get rid of it straight away. But because its going down your mouth, then I don't think they can do the same thing! Maybe ring early morning Monday and ask :)
