EDIT: wow alot of great ideas in the comments related to nameplates guys :) I'm impressed x I appreciate you all
why the fuck do you care outta curiostiy if someone chooses to turn nameplates on for themselves? if they prefer it and dont mind cause its not anywhere near as big a deal as i think you think it is, whats the harm? like srly at base you could have nameplates over heads off with than a nameplate and healthbar appear at the top of your screen when you look at a mob or ally and show you its name and health bar in the top with the option to instead have nameplates over heads with health bars or turn it off completely. srly my guy it aint that deep that you need to remove entire choices from people for no reason and this is literally as bad as the people who cry that a flintlock firearm is a step to far when crossbows with white bolt trails behind them as they are fired are for some reason ok....
Love the new format. I need that twitch juice. Keep pushing for nameplates only on click!
I completely agree with this vid, it also gives Rangers and Rogues, the ability to hid even further rather than when you get close to a PC
*POP* goes your name plate, and poof goes your stealth. Which I doubt that they would implement it that way but still I like you compromise concept in this vid.
people gamma hack dark nights it doesnt work even though i love dark nights.... its just not feasible.
The idea of having nameplates only when you select a mob is exactly what I would expect and want from ashes. The game Enshrouded does this very well. Nameplates are off unless an enemy is targeted OR is taking damage from another source. It feels right. It feels natural, and it fits the immersion just right.
If the nameplates didn't appear at night it would make pvp at night WAY more interesting. You could have ambushes at night! It would add a more dangerous feel to the world at night. I would LOVE that.
...or nameplates appearing only when you are close to a light source.
@@sospokemika1197 even better
@@Dragon211 you "think" you would love that, but you wouldn't love that
@@venivini5151 Why do you say that?
@@austin8313 Why? Because leveling matters. Speedrunning the game matters. You CANNOT die because that would slow down your way to max level, which in turn might not give you the chance to whine on Twitter about how the game has zero content, and when the next update is.
I think nights are perfect. What would be cool though is if certain caves were completely dark without either a torch or magic light spells.
Considering Underrealm looks like rave club, because of all bioluminescent shit they jam into every area, I doubt that will be the case.
Also the occasional moonless or cloudy nights.
im all for realizm but i still want to see the environment in a game that im supposed to have fun in at night
Im all for the "only nameplate on target" out of combat, and then having nameplates show for all enemies you are in combat with outside of that, seems like a good compromise to keep inmersion and gameplay. But yea, it should be definitive, everyone should be equal with that part of the interface whatever they decide to do with it.
Nameplates only showing for mobs you're in combat with - a great solution!
I also believe turning off nameplates completely should stay an option. While yes, in 90% of cases, it is optimal, many players do play games just to play, whether it be for story or rp reasons. I have also turned off name plates in games such as WoW when doing certain mechanics because the screen cluter of name plates can make things harder (M Star Auger for example).
I agree 100% with nameplates, game looks so much better and works better in a PvX game when nameplates are off.
I guess the other option could be nameplates are on during the day and off during the night, makes night a little more dangerous when mobs or players can sneak up on you easier at nights
I would personally only have nameplates appear when A) You select something or hover them in action mode, B) Mobs that hit you or somone in your group
Its definitely not dark enough in distance.
You shouldn't be able to see that far when its dark, then again its a clear night in a desert.
They should've shown night at different biomes and weather conditions.
My thought exactly, it shsould be darker in the distance but overall the colour scheme is on point imo.
@@RandomDaniel_ Color scheme is fine, but I would love to see different ones based on weather conditions and location. Arid dry desert and snow covered plains should have different night hues.
This purple-ish tone fits deserts for sure.
@@MelFright Yeah very true, agreed. shadows from the other lightsources need to be added aswell, big wacky shadows as you get closer to fires and so on.
@@RandomDaniel_ I would go even step further and make moving clouds cast shadow on a ground with god rays peaking through gaps.
Maybe now for a night, but defiantly for a cloudy day.
@@MelFright Ohyes please.
Nights should be dark but moonlight should be strong enough to keep a nice blanket of luminescence allowing enough visibility to play properly but not as good as day time visibility, may be add sources of lighting players could carry like lanterns, torches, class skills that makes light or implement on their nightly caravans/mounts would be a nice touch, bonuses logging at player built campfires out in the wild or at the inns/houses, would be nice to make night caravan trips stealthier by turning off their lights and sort of more dangerous since you can't spot ambushes as easy as in day time whether they are mobs or other players
Surely node cities would have more lights than out in the wild
Well, according to devs carrying torches and lanterns is a chore and players wont like it.
Not to mention those people who keep mentioning the fact that name plates are visible at night so there is no point to really dark nights. I don't care.
Some of us want dark for the sake of immersion.
@@CasabianN-xr5sc They could go Elden Ring route and allow lanterns to be hanged on piece of equipment-Like belts.
I understand what are you trying to say, but dark never looks good in a game and will give you a migraine and an eye strain, seeing nothing or seeing a poorly lit environment is not pretty to look at ,if hiding in darkness effect is what you want, then better to give players more invisibility instead, kinda like what Fallout does with stealth and you will get the same effect ... its much nicer to have an environment that you can see and enjoy! But yeah I agree moonlight should have stronger lighting contrast!
@@CasabianN-xr5sc I 100% agree with the devs that would be dumb asf
@@CasabianN-xr5sc I have been re-playing KCD & the nights there are a mix of moonlight and actual darkness under shade, if you are out in the open and its not foggy you get a subtle moonlight in open spaces, in foggy rainy weather is darker with occasional lightning, if you are in a forest its automatically darker because of extra tree shade, it makes playing in the dark less convenient and encourages waiting for day time to do activities, now I know MMOs are different but are they really different from say Rust? Rust has similar day and night cycles where day is double the time of night but night is very useful for pvp hiding and loot runs, you can make the shape of things at Rust nights but most often players use torches, head lights, hand torches, lights on guns, night vision etc
since AoC is a world of magic I don't see why not add both physical lights and magical lights to illuminate the night, while maintaining the ability to play and move undercover in the dark, best of both worlds
There could be an ability that identifies mobs. So the more rare or higher level mob, the longer it takes to ID. Then a voice over description or ID plate appears temporarily.
1:13 It seems like bounced lights are turned off, so there is nothing to illuminate faces and parts of the shadow. 1:41 That might introduce several types of lights, we will see.
The stream was interesting, and it was nice to see the improvements in lighting. However, overall, it felt more like a filler rather than a focused stream.
Another great discussion! Thanks for the content!
A night that isn't dark is like lava you can walk over. It takes a feature of the world away just for the sake of convenience.
That and I want to see spells start actually reflecting off the environment...
Extra points if the spells start interacting with the environment (e.g. fireballs over water = steam trail, iceballs over water = temporary frozen surface, fireball over sand = glass trail).
Narc, keep on keeping on ... I'll watch
Nameplates in Ashes will show the class as well as info about their armour type and tier, so yes turning them off is a major disadvantage
Nameplates only when clicked on the mob is a great idea. Watching the night time video I just assumed that’s what was happening anyway and I like it
This is how it should always be. Nameplates kill immersion
i reckon it'd be awesome if the view distance of nameplates scaled off the lighting. could make for some jump scare moments out in a forest in the dead of night. along with some interesting dynamics for positioning in pvp
Have name plates based on light level, and attack distance. Even if it is like dnd3.5 humans can't see in the dark without light. A torch provides light out to 20 feet, elves had lowlight vision that gave them 2x distance in color so they could see 40 feet. Dwarves had night vision which gave black and white out to 60 but with no light around.
Now that torch can be seen further than the person holding it can see. So you would have that anyone standing in the light radius would have their name shown if light was bright enough. If dim it could just say humanoid, bright could say minotaur, daylight says it is specific person that you can identify. You could go with darkness makes like the bows arrow spread in front of you that only shows in that cone with diminishing distance depending upon darkness level
2:42 I believe they wanted an ability to move the skybox to simulate the movement of the planet / moons etc.
I really think no nameplates unless target selected is a cool idea.
You'd kind of remember how party members look instead of a floating name.
And as you said, makes darkness a stronger mechanic.
Regardless, I will play in this style. I have enough confidence in my situational awareness to understand what's happening.
We could give some of the races types of nightvision. Heck one of those Vek orcs had eyes the size of saucers and night would likely be like day for him. Tulnar might have a form of thermal vision similar to the Predator or they see in ultraviolet after living underground a long time with all the bioluminescent life.
If they have night time name plates why not just create a Dynamic name plate system that gets more and more faded out dependant on the light level around the character.
So daylight your name plates are popping. Night time in the super dark it's basically invisible. At dusk it's just nice and faded.
I think variety is key. Darkness scaling hour to hour and also season to season. Events like solar and lunar eclipses should also be a thing.
Pitch darkness could be limited to 2 hours a day, it would liven up player activity in cities when it's too dark to safely go adventuring.
I think Josh Strife Says does it really good, picking relevant, interesting streaming content and making short YT videos out of them.
Would be great, if you can do something similar with your streaming content.
Thanks for making videos in your special style. :)
I think this is better. I remember RYL game uses the same mechanic name plates only appears when you click and it does immersed me on to the world.
I feel like an MMO can - and ought not - have nameplates. Double down on the immersion, Intrepid. I'm here for it.
I think nameplate appearance should be a shorter distance during the night say 10 meters or so and maybe like another guy said light sources cause nameplates to appear as something is illuminated, just like regular eyesight would be. I wouldn't want 30 nameplates floating around 100 feet from me. But i also agree with your suggestion of being able to click on something a bit further off and have its nameplate and other info to apear.
What if they did group nameplates to help reduce clutter? For example, a group of the mushroom guys would appear as one nameplate: "group of mushroom guys" but when clicked on, you can easily see and select their individual health bars. This could apply for players too, letting you know theres a group of players there, but not giving you their individual information until their close enough to you.
instead of nameplates and health bars the mobs themselves could show the damage your doing / if there close to death ( missing armor/limbs,slower movement/harder to hold up shield, excesive bleeding, burn damage from lightning spells and such ) , would deffinetly add an extra layer to the game
pax dei lighting looks like it has much higher contrast than AoC new night time. thats what they need to increase, the contrast of the darks and lights, to make it pop more. it's very grey currently... like dulled.
already one year of streaming, I was sure that it was only 4/5 month. Congrat for the one year !!!
Besides targeting nameplates should be exclusive to npc's you can interact with
I think it's perfect for a bright, moonlit night. My question is will there also be darker nights with cloudcover or even thick fog?
Format beside normal materials made time to time when there is 'content', those last videos with this "Table of Contents" touching few topics from discussions made on stream is great, those discussion abbreviations are indeed juicy. {new-line-youtube-style} Personally I like to be overwhelm with content as completionist achiev-bot (features and their layers like PoE skill tree). But as anything to work (have quality) it need effort/hardwork to be made good and that's why often less is better, because it require less time/work to make it (focus on it). so, make crap is easy, make zerg amount or protos quality is harder but make zerg-protos combination is ultra hard. {new-line-youtube-style} In such matter I would love to have skill/talent that need to be learned to have ability to see 1, more or all nameplates like perception, depended on range, daytime, environment + bonus for certain classes (rogue by default, druid in forest etc)(and even not liked by player "debuffs" like warrior in berserk mode would see less). And You need to decide if You will be glass canon DPS-Andy or other type of player. Sacrifice points to have side abilities would be good diversity and customizing options. Like raid leader that do less dmg/heal but have abilities that really help in management and such, that ppl can build cooperation and fulfill certain roles in group, as also affect their immersion in running through empty wilds searching/hunting mobs.
have nameplates only display in a narrow, short cone directly in front of your viewpoint. This simulates your character's attention being on what they're looking directly at, and at night you can reduce the distance. That way you will only have one or two nameplates on at a time, and it actually makes sense. Night could be dark as well.
If they have a day and night cycle why not have name plates off between like 8pm to 6am game time. Idk how quick the days are, don't roast me. Then they come back on b.c the sun is out. You could even apply that to like heavy rain or snow. Caravans lets attack at night fall. Maybe add a torch that makes name plates come back near the fire. IDK man sounds cool to me.
Just have the nameplates off during the night. Will make it more eerie and add some immersion.
I noticed at around 6:45 you only see the nameplate of your current (or recently damaged not sure) target.
The moon is not round (: . It has a very weird shape, and no it's not clouds blocking it.
Also I agree either no nameplates or always nameplates (fading might work, but *we have to see). The level of darkness is fine, but it does need adjustments and improvements and I'm not talking about the sky box.
I'm thinking about the nameplate and what if it worked like rogue coming from hiding when a light source lights up the area where the enemy is.
what if the nameplates only apear when the mobs are in combat with you/your party or when you click a mob like you said
I would love to see nameplates being off and only available on targeted mobs!
Played WoW HC has an Uber immersive playthrough with exactly this; no names, no nameplates, restricted zoom out (aka default for era) and it was fantastic. Did it make the game harder? Fuck yes it did, it required me to pay attention to the world and not the UI and was great!
BDO had darkness too but they had to make night easier to see because people were complaning it was hard to play during night time in-game.
Yeah i remember that BS well. It literally does nothing but make everyone playing find something else to do (in town) other then what they want to do. There are plenty of ways to present night time without it hindering game play.
I imagine the only ppl that like this aspect are ppl planning on playing a stealthy character and they think they will just be out ganking indiscriminately. Seriously doubt there will be no repercussions. If they even find anyone running around at night long term.
Nameplates always off unless targeted makes sense. It also will help with performance which is always a plus.
Keep up the good work!
Also i personally like when you react to Asmongold watching the monthly AoC video for example BUT i have to dig through the vods, as i rarely watch the stream, so i would watch unedited parts of the vod if you would upload it
Maybe a bit too dark in some places. The light sources of the world definitely aren't finished, so it would be nice to see what it looks like with the lighting finalized
Take a shot every time narc says nameplates 💀
bro's tryina get ppl shtfaced
This is once again, an issue of information given to the player. How do you let the player know there is a mob nearby? Do you want to do that? How should targeting someone/thing work? How far should the player be able to see? All of that is information that the player is trying to figure out to make a decision. Having perception as a stat, as another commenter stated, to dictate the answer to these questions is a great idea and I'd love to hear people talk about it. As for nameplates, I say turn them off and have a target UI OR only have nameplates for what you're targeting.
And make night darker, make spells/torches/lanterns/spells be useful. Let you cast them on other players, share oil for lanterns, etc.
Would love to see very dark nights and requirement to carry torches etc. would also love the night/day and season cycle to be more like normal days. I get the impression we will have several nights in 24 hours and seasons that change weekly which I think is too fast.
this is why i follow you narc always on point for me personaly nameplates should be off no matter the day time they breake the immersion of the game and you are in disadvantage if you have the choice for them to be on and you have turned them off
Ayeee what up narc
It's not to dark, it's just dark enough to have night time light sources valuable
Yea that's what I was thinking as well, nameplates off, until you click on them.
I am betting some quests can only be completed when the night sky is in a certain position.....
It is a light issue. Shadow casting can be a bit annoying to get working properly in UE
Depends on your screen it'd so much darker on my 2nd screen
Nameplates only when targeted, or nameplates with anyone in combat, would both be fine for me.
I wonder if a solution could be seeing name plates in the over world only by a spell or skill, one that requires either a channel and or/ high mana consumption per second.
perhaps such said spell/skilll could be named Identify, or Scan, or something.
Have a very minivan name plate that only displays health, it’s a high skill mmo no one who can have nameplates will choose to not use nameplates it’s essential it’s ultra necessary. Sure the choice is okay but it kinda sucks not knowing if you’re allowed to aoe or not / engage on a new mod, it’s require for teamwork not just info. Much love ❤
i think the night is dark enough i do hope that they will have things that will impair your vision a bit more though such as fog or some form of magic would be nice.
Bottom line you should probably always see the nameplates of:
- Players in your group/raid/guild (guild maybe a toggle tbh)
- Players who are hostile // corrupted
Regardless of whether you are targeting them.
Dunno about all the others
I like realism but in an MMO I don’t think it would work to not have nameplates when you are in active clan wars or for castle sieges.
If they only opt out for more telegraphed skill shots, nameplates would barely be necessary, but no, full tab target combat it is...
Telegraphed skills only work when you see your enemies and are not zoomed out of the planet.
nah, having a choice whether to have NP on or off is a great solution
The night is too dark. I started watching the livestream live, and I fell asleep about 5 minutes in to it and did not wake up until it was over. So I had to watch it again, where I fell asleep about 10 minutes into the livestream. This happened to me when "Age of Conan" first came out. When it turned to night time, it was so dark that all I wanted to do is turn the computer off and go to bed.
seek medical help. I think you may have NARColepsy. heh.
Bed time for little billy
I like it
I agree but names should fade in when you look directly at them for a couple seconds and they are close enough. So u don’t have to manually click all the time.
Ps: promonkeyking on twitch
Honestly I just hope they make the underdark much darker. That way we can get the best of both worlds.
These are the real questions
If you want darker than that than lower the contrast and deem the light.
Having dark nights and nameplates contradicts eath other as you say. And yes if you make nameplates optional it is no real choice especially in a pvx environment. I would appreciate no nameplates at all. Only nameplates for the target makes not sense to me if you have a target frame where you see basically the same but in a dedicated space. I remember the twohanded livestream where the rock elementals just came out of the ground. and it was a surprise or at least it took some vigilence to spot them. How cheesy would this have been with name plates. Maybe an option is to show name plates as soon as you get into combat with an entity so surprises are still possible but you also have the conveniance and strategic advantage in immediate battle. I do like the no name plates option better though.
i agree always off nameplates are a must
It's a lumen issue. I mean, you are sitting there with a glowing sword in the dark and there is no illumination from it. Your face should be dark, it's dark out, but the sword should light it up and flicker off of it.
damn this video is tooo true
Always torn about something 😢 damn this game
Bahahaha Pantheon just brightened the night time
nioce vid
Just issue a hot key for name plates to turn them on and off so narc can make a video complaining about having to turn name plates on breaks immersion at night
How about nameplates turn off at night time as a feature of night cycle
The nighttime looked good, erring on the side of too dark. Nothing coming from the player glows properly or anything like that YET
Considering the day/night cycle is going to happen to every player all the time they are playing, we should be able to see what we are doing lol
Not being able to see during the night is immersive and fun if you have ways to combat the darkness. Thats the whole point.
@@poisonated7467 I dunno. I’d rather do other things. There are plenty of games that use night time and darkness dynamics. I don’t think it has to be in every game.
@@barrywhite1770 I haven't found any games outside of a handful that use darkness. Certainly 0 MMORPGs do it.
Long time viewer of the channel. I have to say before you started to stream videos like this I watched per religion. Enjoyed the style and conversation and details provided. I was actually surprised and looked forward to a stream to catch you in. Then after a few I started to notice (Just my opinion) your personality started to change and I thought at times I was trying to watch a coked out maniac jump roping just to attempt to entertain or be good. Please do not take this the wrong way but you had a good sound and a good breakdown and ideas and personality already. Just saddens me when I only catch a few of these now due to how you changed over the last year+. I fully understand you must give out to what gives back the most. Yea I agree. I skip through the videos now or simply don’t watch them anymore.
@@mannybear4937 For me it's mostly the Live Streaming. When its back to basics like this I am pleased and it's like a sigh of relief. The Streaming though made me take a second look like man is this the Narc I know.
please stop treating youtubers like they're people to be worshiped guys.
It's bad for your mental health.
I am just one nerd trying to make videos for a game that doesn't exist - I'm not JSH
@@Narc not worship just feedback.
Anybody who enjoys squinting at their screen trying to see in the night hours is insane. It's not immersive, it actually pulls you out of the immersion coz you're going "f*ck this game is a bit dark aye?" and if there is some sort of advantage to be gained, by turning the settings down to reduce shadows,, rays, etc then people will just turn it all off anyways, so they should just tune it to a state where people won't feel like they need to play with settings, gamma, brightness, etc. side note: i like the vids that are cut up stream content. it's how i've watched Asmon for years. it's also easy for your to keep up the vids when the game is out and you just want to play and not make vids, well you just stream your play and BAM, you've got vids.
While sky does looked beautiful, I found the environment poorly lit, I understand in a huge-scale environment such as AOC having lighting spheres across the entire environment could be very memory-consuming and costly but I hope they improve it at least around some more obvious features- like a landscape ... I found the lighting in general dull and missing that beautiful vibrant effect as well as contrast ... maybe mix with pre-rendered should be used to cut down the memory cost ...
I dontmknow if it was the video quality but i was not a fan of the exploded moon.... just looked messy
it is dark enough. the end.
*Verra will never be dark at night, because it has multiple moons.*
Something about them looks too much like B, C, rare movies that shoot their nighttime scenes outside in the middle of the day then put a terrible blue filter on them.
Darker!!!
Torn over when you will speak to Ashes of Relation xD
Why so hands off with the ashes of creationn, CREATOR COMMUNITY?
Just have the name plates emailed.
Still want to see you doing skits again. Perhaps you could try putting one for your Twitch channel intro and see how people react.
they will return soon my friend
My favorite mornings are the ones where I wake up and there's a Narc video to listen to during my morning routine.
Its way too soon to judge anything lighting.
You're correct it's an impossible job to get lighting perfect. One thing I like about paxdei, and what I think is very important, is getting the white colour of light as correct as possible. The light spectrums need to be accurate.
Its dark at nighttime therefore it should be dark but playable at nighttime unless you are in a city. The only exception is on nights with an extremely bright moon but that shouldnt be every night.
Nameplates shouldnt be an option unless you click on a target or at the very least implement a feature that during the nighttime all nameplates get turned off. Even the pve nameplates should get turned off at night because nighttime shouldnt just be the regular grind but with a dark theme. Its dark.. You can see very little or fuck all balanced around still being playable and not being a pitch black survival game
What if nameplates show once the mob/enemy take damage, and dissapear once they are back to full health? This can give both the ability to do "ganks" in the world, but once in battle you are able to easily track what is going on as long as you done the damage to the target.
i love flickering on my screen when enemy gets hit by 15 damage abilities
Narc you are way to strict on it, but i would agree that there should be an option to select for day and nighttime.
the reason for being so strict is because everyone should be under the same rules and by offering choice - it splits the playerbase :) I think that is bad for open world MMORPGs that feature PVP elements
@Narc I mean, if vision matters, then you need to lose the target if he LOS you.
Btw before you see me as a hater, you are sexy in your steven underwear. ;) hrhrhr.
I just don't think that this should matter.
Ashes will bring us the best mechanics and it shouldn't be to hardcore. There need to be casuals that i will protect as a Headhunter for the correct ammount of ducets ofc ☺️
No it's not dark enough. You can see literally everything. Fires and torches are useless then. Also you can see every player/mob, there is no danger in the dark, no potential stealth or hiding.
Nameplates are an ESSENTIAL social aspect of MMORPGs.
You recognize people not by clicking on everyone and chatting with everyone but by reading their names over and over in common situations.
After a week of running support quests in a node you learn that those 3 guys are always around your usual spots and routes.
And for PvP its important to recognize the people that have meaning for you.
Because it's not real-life, you don't do that by seeing their faces but need something else - nameplates.
Yeah for players that definitely makes sense.
However for mobs and npcs that could be a different story entirely.
Good point though!
True. While I like to RP and disable nameplates if there is no critical action; they are a necessity.
Especially if there are spells with tab targeting in a game.
They arent, there is such a thing called the Target UI element. You can target someone, or look at someone and know who they are. Cosmetics and barbershops ruins that though. You absolutely can recognize people by clicking on everyone and moreso chatting. The point is information, what information are you using to identify a player/mob/npc? Name, clothing, character model? How are you getting that information? Nameplate, target UI, character model?
