I think I know the real reason why E36s were not as popular for rallying.
the engine sounds very hypnotising, which would be dangerous when there are long flowing ribbons of gravel and then you need to hit a "SQUARE LEFT INTO EASY RIGHT TIGHTENS, OVER CREST, KEEP CENTER"
