The Local Side of Hong Kong 🇭🇰

- The local side of Hong Kong! In this video we will be exploring a market that the locals love to visit to purchase their fresh fish, meat, and clothing. This is very much a local side of the city so they are not used to receiving tourists like myself, so you will notice that people are not the most friendly in this video, but nonetheless it was an experience that I'm glad I had! This video is nowhere near as long as my usual films, but I still hope that you enjoy it!

I noticed people already complaining about this video... if it bothers you simply don't watch. I didn't go out of my way to film this market, it was literally near my hotel and I found it super interesting.
If you only want to see touristic areas, feel free to go watch the millions of videos that there are about the same places on CZcams 😂 Don't waste your time trying to prove a point... the touristic places will be shown also, but the local sides in my opinion are way cooler than Victoria Peak, avenue of the stars, and Nathan Road 😂
That's what makes your videos great. When you go off the beating path. Don't listen to negative people you do you.
Awesome Chris, what a great attitude. ❤ Hey next time you're in Los Angeles, can you show us East LA or if you're in Long Beach, can you film Compton instead? Just skip the tourist areas like Beverly Hills and show us the real Los Angeles. 😂
Hi Criss I recomended you one place you must visit in Hong Kong. It is Ngong Ping 360, you can enjoy view of Lantau Island from cable car and going to Ngong ping village where you can see The Big Buddha.
@@tantijoo He said he's not doing the tourist areas. I don't think he's aware of it yet but he's catering to a smaller group of viewers that wants to see the negative rundown areas of other countries. I've seen this before, he's basically being used by others with an agenda. He has no idea the bigger audience in the millions wants to see the opposite he's filming. One other travel channel I follow, a British guy name Jason with millions of subs gets over millions of views using a different approach. He even started a new channel recently and gotten over 50k subs in just two month.
@@ANXZ07 I'd like to see that also.
My aunt used to live in that area! I appreciate you being so genuinely positive. When the butterfly landed, that old man was saying in Cantonese, "it just flew in, so pretty right?!" So he was chatting with you :)
That is amazing! So glad you enjoyed this video 🙏🏻❤️🇭🇰
Kowloon walled city?
@@gogadev Hi no, this is the Ngau Chi Wan Market near Choi Hung (Rainbow) station. If I remember this video correctly!
@@mellymelme5293 thanks
Ngau Chi Wan is one of the very local working class neighbourhoods with the some of the lowest incomes mostly with elderlies and new immigrants
They are busy earning a living and I guess were not used to cameras filming them and were probably shy and spoke no English at all!
Well done for visiting in local style and really hope you have a lovely trip in this amazing city! The city truly has everything to offer
Chris, you ask if this video is dull. NO, it is not! You haven't posted a dull video yet. All of your travels and comments are fascinating.
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me!! Seriously! 🙏🏻❤️
I support you and appreciate your efforts to reveal vivid normal life of general local community...Its what other foreign visitors may eager to know. Well done!
The one thing I appreciate about your channel is that you take excursions like this and show the not so glamorous and glitzy side of cities. Markets like this are part of that. Not everyone is going to be nice and cheery for the camera. It's all part of the experience. Glad you didn't eat all that cold pork right away. That was definitely meant to be taken home and cooked in a microwave.
Thanks a lot Don! Same here! I appreciate videos like this more than those who try and sugar coat everything! I took that pork home and heated it up afterwards..... so dang good bro!
Thank you Chris for showing us the local side of Hong Kong!
It's the most important thing to experience other cultures when you're travelling, and the touristy area doesn't really do that justice.
Venturing off the beaten path takes courage, not to mention the locals are more shy and are not used to speaking English at all.
So thank you for showing us the Local Side of Hong Kong, keep bringing us to incredible adventures! ❤❤❤❤
What a sick video man, this is original and just what we want, raw experience of places most people won't go to or even film, thanks brother and keep it up!
Love to experience the world through your travels, I cannot wait to start mine. ❤ 🌍 ❤
Thanks so much!
I bumped into this video as youtube recommends it to me for no reason. Being a local HK chinese, I found it surprisingly interesting watching a foreigner having a tour of the wet market. The things you noticed were completely different from mine and it's just a fresh point of view for me. I noticed that your channel is about going to all these places in the world and I subscribed to your channel (and instagram too) immediately. Looking forward to watching more videos of your previous and future travel experiences. Keep it up, man!
Your upbeat and positive attitude is great, and you're to be praised for getting off the beaten track and visiting neighbourhoods and local markets such as Ngau Chi Wan!
Hi! Really glad u went to explore a wet market of Hong Kong! These are really good places, and despite me not going there much, they’re still a crucial part of my memory. I grew up in Hong Kong, and it’s really pleasing to see someone explore the lesser known places of Hong Kong, like the wet market, which is very very fascinating. Glad u are enjoying Hong Kong! 💜
PS: I think the reason they don’t want u coming over is probably becuz they feel uncomfortable with a camera filming them, especially with a tourist… and there’s the language barrier so…
I'm a local in HK and you've earned a new subscriber!
I won't miss any of your new videos now. Protect your true soul and your own pace, Chris. Thank you for your videos.
I really like this adventure!! It can definitely see how the HK locals are.
I live in HK, but I haven’t been to this market before too! Thanks for showing this video to us!! And hope you like Hong Kong 🎉
We went to HK 3 years ago and we loved it. Only encountered 2-3 people that were rude to us. Make sure you check out the night market if you have time and when you go to Disney try the squid there is only 1 cart in the park that sells it. I just watched all 3 of your HK videos, cant wait to see the rest.
I love the fact that you show the real
Side of a place .. it’s what’s interesting about another country the way they operate their daily life’s !!! Let’s gooo love it bud
I like the raw videos, like you say the real places and people are the real interesting spots. One of my fave things to do in a new country is to hit the local markets or supermarkets to see new things. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Thanks a lot Hayley! I always appreciate your comments! I know you're waiting on that Disneyland video, but trust me its coming soon!!!
@@Travelwithchris can’t wait! I like how you remember. This is exactly why your subscribers love you, you remember what we say.

@@nirobeata I agree, I love to travel and watch travel content. But I always found that too many are just out flexing for the gram and don’t show real honest travel, and that sometimes travel is hard/frustrating. I like that he keeps it real and is respectful. He deserves every success. I started following Gladys and solo too via Chris and I like them. Love right back from England! 🏴
@@hayleykhan896 definitely i agree and you are very right ! do you have travel chanel too ? I also traveling sometimes . If u go to Disneyland go watch the lion king show...alot of my samoan friends perform in there
That’s some serious local content bro that’s amazing Keep it up!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Yo, in the beginning of the vid, I love that you gave a dude sitting down some money; and then you thanked him. Much respect.
I appreciate that 🙏🏻❤️
Remember how Hong Kong has changed. Rules different and people are cautious. Been many times and was there recently again. People very friendly and helpful.
I think outsiders feel that hk people are unfriendly but there answers are usually very prompt or sarcastic as a first line defense similar to new York people but they will help you out if you can communicate properly.
As much as the tourist places can be interesting Cath and I prefer the walk about in the local places. Great video Chris, keeping it real! Till next time✌️👍
I live in Hong Kong, when watching you walking around this place I now have a whole new appreciation to my place
me too!
I was in Hong Kong for 3 weeks in Aug.1988. The viewers are right: very hot, humid and rain most days. I remember Causeway Bay, the shopping district is similar to Yonge Street in Toronto, Canada. I always like that you show the local side of Hong Kong. I grew up eating Chinese food. I love eating the pork, ducks, and chickens in their markets. I never like the tourist traps. I love their fruits like the mangoes!
Hey Chris keep up the good videos. I love traveling through your eyes. Thanks man👊🏾
Thanks a lot Dee! I appreciate the kind words!
great video..even though there wasn't too much crazy stuff going on, still like to see mellow videos like this. keep them coming!!!!!
So many great videos on the way! They will be longer as well!
It was great. I enjoyed watching it and loved it as always. Thanks Chris.👍👍👍😍😍😍
Cool video Chris. Nice to see the local side of places, I personally prefer just walking through local markets and just taking in the countries culture. It’s like taking a stroll through the swapmeet back here in socal. Take care dude get some sleep man 😂.
😂😂😂 facts just like the swap meet! I need to film one of those when I return to film in LA
Chris I really love your videos and you as well. Keep up the good work.
Yes it's the language barrier plus not used to seeing tourists, especially with cameras. But very cool video, great foods, you crack me up Chris. Bring it on how it is! Hommies (live fish) must
be suff
Homies must be suffering lol upstairs is the rough part of the market. Hope you are having a great memorial day stay safe and def look forward to the next video.
😂😂😂 thanks a lot Gina! I hope you had an amazing weekend!
Great video Chris! I myself love indulging in the local areas of whertever I visit, loved tis video!
Thanks a lot! I also very much enjoy that! 🙏🏻🫡
Thanks brother can’t wait to enjoy more of this trip. 🫡 from Austin Texas
Love your videos Chris! You always put up great content! Forget the haters Chris! Big fan of yours! Much love brother 🤙🏽
I grow up and live in Ngau Chi Wan for most of my life, it has been almost 3 years since I left HK. Thank you for the video.
Love Hong Kong series so far🤙🏼 Me and my gf are going to Thailand in few weeks, maybe we will see there! Greetings from Finland again Chris!🇫🇮
That is awesome! I hope to cross paths with you also! You're going to love it!
sorry for my bad English, I want to say
What a great video!
You show real life in Hong Kong
instead of rich people and flashy tourist areas
That's great!
Great content! Very good local market tour! Keep it up!
Extremely cloudy view. Absolutely No 24/7 public transportation. Beautiful butterfly. Excellent day 2
Dang Mann sour vibes in that market for sure! Glad it didn’t affect your mood, Great video brother !
Yeah, but you'll see a lot of better interactions later on in the series!
Personally, I consider shopping an integral part of the trip, so thank you for the great video, continue your journey
I have to say, as someone who has been in and out of Hong Kong so much, I wasn't even aware that the MTR has exits right into wet markets. Cool video and thanks for sharing! Don't worry too much about the comments on the less comfortable interactions. Working class or not, touristy or not, nice is nice and rude is rude. It's just part of life in Hong Kong--customer service attitudes are all over the place! It's ALWAYS worth exploring the less touristy parts of every city and see how the locals live.
If you can get past the sights and sounds, the truth is these markets (sort of a Chinese equivalent of "farmers' markets") are where the freshest ingredients are to be found.
' Oh man you know what ' 😋 as you say always lol , ..i love to watch your local makert video experience with supporting people always !
Take care bro..! ❤🙏
@13:14. On the top left are bbq pork, pork ribs... bottom left quill and pigeon.
As a local I can confirm that people there are super nice. I still remember one time I dropped my airpods into a super dirty drainage, and the people nearby just helped me recovered it. As told in some of the comments already, they are mostly working class people who can barely speak English so don't feel bad about them ignoring you!
Good morning Enjoy your Memorial Day and thanks for your services stay safe
You absolutely nailed it Chris. No CZcamsr (non local) has ever filmed a local market place. Well done👍👍👌👌
Nice to see you exploring some parts of local shops😮
Thanks a lot Jill!
Nice video . Thanks for keeping it raw and real
Chris I think it is really cool what you do. Stay true to yourself and don't let people change you. By the way I was thinking that the one floor you were on that wasn't very cool maybe you were in the work area of the market and they were not used to people coming in just a thought. God Bless and keep going Bro.
Thanks a lot for the kind words Tom! I always appreciate your support 🙏🏻
i enjoy your videos bro been watching for a while i liked this raw style of content it was great
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
we love your videos chris !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much! 🙏🏻❤️
Great content, I really appreciate your effort, thank you!
Thanks a lot for the support!
@@Travelwithchris You're OK bro, I know it takes a lot of courage to speak to any strangers in a new city
You are very nice to consider others feeling and some just don’t want to be in front of camera. Since opening of the border, there are so many Chinese KOL filming locals and criticize them not speaking mandarin or not nice to them as they speak mandarin. More respect is what HongKonger need!
Keep up the great content Bro Chris
Thanks brother!
Yet another cheeky tip: Busses are numbered in Hong Kong, if the bus number has a "X" behind it, it often goes to the same place at the number without an "x" but will miss some stops to arrive at main stops faster, however it is a few HDK more expensive. Enjoy HK ppl! 😁
Guys, some older generation they only know Cantonese, which is their mother tongue. Just like when I am in the U.S and walk into Walmart and freaking speak Cantonese with the cashiers, they would for sure give me nasty look. It’s the same. So, just try to be respectful if other humans being on the world who don’t necessarily know English. Just like you don’t like Cantonese. ❤ much love and awesome video series, thank you 🎉
👏👍
Hi Chris, coolamundo market walk!! ✌️
Nice video, stay safe and enjoy your trip 😊
In Hong Kong , there is local food plaza on the highest floor of every building of wet market. The lower floor u can buy vegetables, meat, fruit, fish, etc. But on the highest floor, u can find a large local food centre that u can try different kinds of local food such as dim sum , porridge, roasted meat, roasted duck. But u should find the wet market run by urban council of Hong Kong Gouvernment. It is very easy to identify the gouvernment wet market building coz usually it is a complex large building with 4-5 floors. Purchase of food and fruit on the lower floor. Food centre on the 4th or 5 th floor. It is food heaven on the highest floor. But if there is one block of wet market with only 1 or 2 floors, they do not provide food centre
You were pointing out the Pear in the wet market when you buy one apple. (In asia, often see Pear like this rather than the green pear you see in other parts of the world) They are quite juicy also, as for the barbecue pork, better eat at the shop when there is rice to go with it.
Welcome to Hong Kong bro
Please forgive the elderly who do not speak English, they do not have much chance for education as we did in the past, but they work so hard for this city and family.
Btw, your video remind me the trip to italy, and I ask the same question in the market, but they recommend everything to me😅
Thanks so much! I appreciate the support big time! So glad this brought you back some memories!
We often forget, Hong Kong has had a very hard past as a colony (which by nature is exploitative), and also wartime occupation. Things only became better since the 70s and 80s. My parents both grew up poor in the old HK, they had unique opportunities that perhaps we no longer get, but they also suffered hardships like poverty and starvation that I never had to.
My father loves in the new territory (village). They have some really good cycle routes with stunning views.. The city side and shopping is OK. But the city is filled with unhappy and mundane people. When I go I plan to jus do alot of mountain climbing. Cycling. And stay out of the city besides a few boat rides etc in the harbour side. But yh still very interesting how people cook and own their little interesting stalls. Good work my man👊🏻
Fantastic video Chris.
Thanks a lot brother!
Keep d vids comin I luv them❤
Thank you Stacyann 🙏🏻❤️
Hey Cris i liked the video off the market and a like the long video please make more video,s off Honkong thanks for sharing Cris 🙏👍🥰
I liked this video, not sure why others didn't. You went to somewhere really local. That is an area with a lot of government-subsidized housing for poor people. One reason people might not like the cameras is because a ton of tourists flocked to the local playgrounds due to the rainbow design, just for Instagram photos. Sometimes literally few dozen people hanging around just for pics. So locals might be fed up of tourists with cameras. But almost all were still cool with you. As the odd one out, you became the thing of curiosity haha ;)
Welcome to Hong Kong, best place on earth. ❤
You very nice person sir...a good traveller
Hi Chris, I lived in Hong Kong for more than 10 years. I suggest you to go to the peak and taking the boat across the Victoria harbor. Feel free to ask me , have a nice trip!
Chris You are amazing person ❤
Your video is really was very cool and means a lot to me
The crispy pork you bought can be eaten coler, but it best served warmed up and dipped in mustard sauce
That small mango, the pit like paper thin, I wish I can find them here, I only saw one time when I was visiting SF
I love your videos, but i do think its important to read the room and not push people out of their comfort zones, especially as a tourist entering their territory. I'm going to keep watching of course, cause i do love your videos.
Welcome all come to Hong Kong 😊
Good mix of Hong Kong. The pork & Mango's look great.
Great video Chris.
Thanks so much!
These kinds of videos are dope i wanna see the local sides
Thanks brother!
Good Video and nice Music at the end
I look forward to watching more Hong Kong content! @18:48 You need to try out asian pears when you get the chance! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
I had one a few days after I filmed this video!!! So delicious!! So many great videos on the way!
There are a lot of Indonesians working in HK as house helpers , hence lots of market for Indonesians local food, same applies to Philippinos
Upstairs and downstairs is like the east and the west coast lol😅🤣 a total different vibe💯 sending love from🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Hong kong is a beautiful place
OMG! Welcome to Hong Kong! 🙂 I am your biggest fan and I watch all your videos! They are very cool and interesting! 🤗 I am from Sri Lanka, but living in Hong Kong! Lots of love! Stay safe! May I ask, how long are you staying in Hong Kong for?
Thank you so much for the support! Unfortunately, I already left! I hope to be back soon though! Such a great place!
Chris, you forgot to take the mustard for crispy pork. It is very delicious!
They mostly have food court upstair over the market.
Nice market. I wish we had one like that here in Southern Minnesota
Yes I wish we had one in LA!
They have some in NY & LA, I've seen them personally.
Another great video. You using your gopro for this? Or could it be your big camera scaring them?
21:49 Chris, yes there are a big Indonesia population in Hong Kong, because many of them are Domestic helper so The housewife can go out to work those ladies helping the family😮
Oh wow very interesting!
Chris, can you please let us know the day of the week you are shooting these videos so we have a sense of the energy during the week or on the weekends? Thanks
Not dull at all man. Hardly anyone makes a video of a wet market in HK, LOL
These are exactly the content I love ! It’s not staged you just film your adventures no matter what they are . Just always remember to stay yourself and we will follow! Safe travels broski
That's 110% staged. It's not what most of Hong Kong looks like. He went off the beaten path outside the city 1:20-1:28 to film the most impoverished places.
Appreciate that bro!
I went soooo far out of my way to film this... like a block from my hotel far 😂, people will always complain though. Can't please everyone
So what if he did ,if you don’t like it keep moving bro no need to comment! Negativity is unwelcome and not needed!
@@bigchewy8069 No negativity from me, why don't you go back to america and film skid row instead, I'll even buy you a drink.
Thank you for your kindness Chris, I think the local people at the market wasn't unwelcome for the camera, they were just don't speak English, not all Hong Konger speak proper english unfortunately, especially for some older people and older local market😂, usually traveler won't go to those places, so they were shy to see a foreigner visit them and because they don't understand your words and they don't used to it😅, but i believe they welcome your visit in their heart😊
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you appreciated this video!
Awesome chris ..
From Malaysia 🇲🇾
Thanks a lot!
Hey Chris, greetings from San Diego, CA! Been watching your videos for a minute and realized I never subscribed, done now!😂 Nayways, got any plans of hitting up Taiwan any time soon? Bombest street food and friendliest people! Take care and keep the videos coming!
Thanks a lot for hitting that button! It seriously helps a lot! Much love to you in SD!
Yes I want to visit Taiwan very soon! I'm going to try and hit as many Asian countries as I can in the next few months to start my focus in Latin America next 🙏🏻❤️
Should go to fruit market in Yaumati district.
Mong Kok night market or Ladies market. Famous for street shopping.
Hey Chris New audience from HK here and thank you for ur visit~
I just want to express some of my thoughts while watching this video🤔🤔Most of the aunties and uncles just don’t really want to be on the camera(kinda offensive to them I guess?)and they are too too too shy😌😌(also bc of the language barriers) That’s pretty common if u go to some historic and local(not that touristic)places in HK. Anyway I just wanna tell u we are friendly and talkative if no language barriers at all🙈
Btw ur video is really cool(the pork definitely is the TOP 10 best food ever in the world)🤓🤓I like these videos when u r in India the most🤣
Finally a little tips if u gonna visit HK next time again👀be careful when u ask the price cuz tourist are the best ppl to get extra money from u know🤫
In Hongkong wet markets, they are mostly still using two measurement systems:
One is the traditional Chinese system (ie catty/kati, tael, mace)
The other one is the British Imperial system (ie pound, ounce).
The price of those mangos you bought was HK$12/pound
Conversion rate for USD to HKD is
1 USD approx. = HK$7.8
Love the local meat market, you should rent a self catering appointment somewhere and go to a local market buy some random items and cook us up a meal chefchriseats 😂😂
I did that in an upcoming street food video! Bought some frogs and took it to a food court and they prepared them for me! Coming soon!!!
I recommend visiting Hong Kong in Tijuana. They have authentic Hong Kong cuisine.
😂😂😂
Chris, I miss the way they pack the crispy skin pork, remind me when I was very little young , my old mom took me go shopping , back to 60 years ago
Wow thanks for sharing bro
