As many of the outputs of the 2600 are in the range -10V to +14V, the AD/ADSR Gate and Trigger Inputs should be able to handle that voltage range safely.
For reference, Specifications from the Behringer 2600 documentation:
AD/ADSR Gate In threshold is +4V.
AD/ADSR Trigger In Threshold is +5V.
The portamento/ keyboard Gate Out voltage is +14V max.
The portamento/ keyboard Trigger Out voltage is +10V max.

I have a Division Six Dual Mini Sequencer and the Behringer 2600. I tried your gate/preamp method and it does not trigger the 2600 ADSR properly. One thing you missed was adjusting different ADSR parameters. If you did you would probably notice that the attack and decay are not functioning properly (as well as the rest of the EG) when applying only the gate to the 2600 VCF EG. After much research online I found a video with the solution. It's hard to find in the 2600 documentation. The ADSR requires a trigger AND a gate. The Division Six Dual Mini Sequencer only has a gate out. I recently purchased an EMW "gate to trigger" module. I split the gate out of the Sequencer with one going into the 2600 gate jack and the other split going to the EMW Gate to trigger converter. I then brought the EMW generated trigger into the 2600 trigger input jack. Presto! The 2600 ADSR functions as expected. If you want I can throw a quick video together to show the patching and results. To share with your community. I enjoy you videos. Never owned an ARP back in the day. MiniMoog was my synth of choice. So I had a bit of a learning curve. Your videos helped.

      Hello Ronald,
many thanks for sharing your experience with the Division Six Sequencer.
I am totally aware of the fact the 2600 EG’s require a Gate AND Trigger signal. As a matter of fact I have already made a video about this
      czcams.com/video/MTf10H0KWDU/video.html
But nevertheless you took the best approach by doing your own research and testing. That’s always the best way to learn the 2600 Synth.
I have never dabbled with the Division Six Sequencer but with all my equipment I have never experienced any Attack/Decay issues on the ADSR when going through the Preamp. Except for the the Sustain which is probably due to the fact that the Preamp might not be DC coupled. Anyway when you look at the ADSR position in my video and listen to the accompanying sound then you will notice that the Attack and Decay are working properly.
One again I would like to refer to this video here czcams.com/video/MTf10H0KWDU/video.html and suggest that you try to split the Gate and Trigger and boost the just the Trigger signal and run it into the Trig input slot.
I am currently shooting another video about Gate connection issues because I have received several further questions/comments on my various Socials. So kindly stay tuned.
Thanks a lot for watching my content and for taking the time to write this comment. Greetings, Ralph

Hi Ralph, I have just got my original (1974) 2600 back from service and was trying to run it from my Doepfer Dark Time Sequencer (still to try with my Doepfer MAQ 16/3 and my Keystep - and expect a challenge, and probably failure using the Behringer 960 sequencers!). I followed all of your instructions and even with the input levels at x 100 I was still getting the Sample and hold clock taking over/playing on top of my sequence - giving a sort of double beat or a click as well as the sequencer output and then fading itself out when the S&H clock faded. After thinking a lot I have plugged in the output from the preamplifier gain control (big knob on the top left of the 2600 - same as the Behringer but not a slider) as you suggested, BUT connected it to the Sample and Hold GATE input on the 2600. That works - so far. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I am working through your other videos.
I just found your other video which actually covered this bit. I plan to watch everything you have produced eagerly!
    Best wishes, Tony, Hove, UK.

Ralph! taht was exactly the problem I had while using the signal splitter (that one that looks like an asterix).... it splitted the voltage so it wasn't enough to duly trigger the Osc..... and the Trigger. I updated the firmware as you adviced and starte using it with midi (and just for knowledge, I tested the CV splitter with a multimeter,.. and yeah...)

On the GATE only, right? The 960 is +8V the 2600 has different voltage on different modules. What I’ve seen is that the pitch enter direct to the Arp’s mixer and then to the VCO pitch. And the gate goes to the Arp’s PreAmp and when to the S/H…. And then it works correct? Thanks Ralph 👍

I used to use a Kenton with my old OG 2600. You can use it in a variety of ways - including the extra CV etc. With the Behringer you’d be able to use midi to deal with the note pitch and on/off, freeing up all the CVs for fun stuff like filter cv, pulse width… anything with a control input really.

This is a very helpful suggestion, and is much simpler than the using the voltage processor.
Is the preamp DC coupled, so a long gate will hold the envelope open?
Also like your suggestion to use MIDI when possible.
Another thing to check, is if the hardware sending the trigger/gate/clock, has an option to select what voltage they send. Some allow you to choose between 10v and 5v.
A few of my synth toys have that, like the MicroFreak, and the Korg SQ-64 sequencer.

    • @RalphBaumgartl

The Arturia Keystep also allows you to choose between a 5v and a 12v gate.

When Behringer recreated the Juno with the DeepMind they put effects, a screen, lots of preset memory, MIDI cc implementation, etc. Now that is how to recreate the voice of something with modern features. After that Behringer lost this fantastic concept and I have never purchased another product of theirs, though I like my DeepMind. If they made a full cc implementation on this, a screen, presets and TC effects, I would instantly buy this and pay a lot more gladly. But as is, I am not sure I would take one even if the company offered to send me one for free.

Ironically, the 2 behr synths I own are a dm12m and a 2600. I prefer digitally controlled synths, including analogs. The dm12 is really amazing. The 2600 is old school modular which means patching. I am a keyboard player, but I am exploring some semi-modular toys, otherwise I would not have the 2600 either. I got a grandmother and a west pest for the semi-modular games. It is actually fun to string several synths together for crazy new sounds. Behringer will have more original synths soon. They are developing a ton of synths.

I have a Dark Time sequencer (set at 12v gate out) which still doesn’t trigger my Karp 2600FS, which supposedly only needs 10v. I do exactly what you do - use the preamp to boost the Dark Time. It works fine but annoyingly means I can’t use the preamp for sound design at the same time.
Love your videos - if I could make one suggestion it would be to ditch that awful headset mic and find a better alternative. Your voice-over sound quality really lets down your otherwise great productions. All the best.

hello Ralph! I have another beginner question for you 🙂 are there things which work only with midi? today I am messing around with my 2600 connected to my Keystep Pro via CV. all the connections are fine and it all works great. but I noticed that the "vib depth" slider was having no effect? so I unplugged all my patch cables (except LFO) and connected via midi and the "Vib depth" is behaving exactly as you would expect?
I tested using one CV connection: KSP into OSC 2 for pitch, and KSP into S&H clock for gate, and then cable (same as with midi connection) from LFO sine output into PWM input of OSC 2 (also tried with pitch) but doing this, the "vib depth" has absolutely zero effect? what am I doing wrong here Ralph? is there another CV connection to make that I am missing? thank you! have a great day 🙂

    • @RalphBaumgartl
      @RalphBaumgartl  Před rokem +1

Yes, certain things will only work right out of the box if you have a midi keyboard connected. Using a delayed LFO (vibrato effect) during a CV/Gate connection requires a lot more patching and making use of the Voltage Processor. Kindly check my tutorial here: czcams.com/video/5pkO7Yiffac/video.html
But as I said in my video, always go for the Midi connection first, because it makes things easier especially when you are starting out with the 2600 Synth. Greetings, Ralph
