    I appreciate that the SBF aren't saying this guy's an idiot for stopping partway through the first game, they're actually discussing the mechanics of the game and problems it has design wise and why going from Bayonetta to DMC1 makes it feel bad. I like that they're not just dismissing the question entirely and moving on, they're putting thought into how they construct their answer and actually answering the guy's question. Chalk up another reason these guys are my favorite channel.

      I also think they just know this situation all to well, cause they've talked about it before about playing prequels before the first official game or Woolie not being able to climb just about anything outside of Breath of the Wild. BotW seems to have that effect on many people, jumping off of cliffs thinking they have a glider.

    Since they talk about going back to old games, my favourite game of all time is Metal Gear Solid 3, which came out when I was still unable to appreciate games on a deeper level. I didn't play it until the HD collection came out, and I still feel that if the game is good enough to stand on its own, the age won't matter.
    Which is why you usually only see like fifteen NES games get re-released all the time. Those are the ones that still hold up the most.

      Hi, 7 months later, and if you are still there, I remember renting MGS3 when it came out (being a MASSIVE FAN of MGS1 and MGS2)... and I really didn't like MGS3 at the time.
      I felt that the games jungle setting was instantly dated at the time, and the 'jungle' was just a set of really tiny rooms that looked vaguely outdoorsish... because Metal Gear felt best when in urban environments (especially when Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon and Halo (all having 'better' jungles) existed between the gap between MGS2 and Snake Eater.
      HOWEVER... having finally played MGS3:Subsistence (aka the HD version that fixed the camera) a couple of years ago, I can NOW see why it is a classic (especially on harder difficulty). Metal Gear needed an entirely new camera system to realise the potential of its ambitions for outdoor environments.

      Dunno, but honestly, I do find flaws and faults with its characters and certain plot/narrative points. I'd hardly call it the best in the series, or even the best FF on PS1. That's not to say it sucks: the combat's some of the best in the series. But it has been legitimately hyped beyond acceptable levels by those whose first FF was 7, as well as the Cloud/Sephiroth fans who want to suck their dicks and see stupid shonen-style fights and conflict in a sci-fi/fantasy setting.
      There's a better execution of that last bit, and it's called Kingdom Hearts.

    *1st, DMC3* :
    See how that game still holds up today as one of the bests. Understand the hype and go wild SSStylish.
    *2nd, DMC1* :
    Your hype after playing DMC3 will make you understand how far they've gone and enjoy it as a cool building block for the genre.
    *3rd, DMC4* :
    After having a good understanding about the games, DMC4 will allow you to experience the greatest combat ever in the series, and how bare bones the game is.
    Finally, you can play *DmC:DmC anytime* , it's good as a starting point but lacking compared to DMC3-4.

      DMC1 is 17 years old. There are tons of games that exist now that look and feel better. (Also early 2000s PS2 was basically the generation of trash camera).
      It's not a case of not being 'smart enough' to appreciate a good game, its not being able to tolerate the jank shit that was ironed out through improved hardware and years of working on the DMC formula.
      Also I remember DMC1 is outdated culture-wise now too, being the flavor of early 2000s Matrix-era tryhard edgelord culture (aka teenage white boys buying swords and overcoats). I can see people who are not familiar with that wondering "why is this game seriously trying to push this lame shit?". There's a lot of stuff in it that has gone from cool to comedic only thanks to age.

      @NaveNinja Před 6 lety +1

      I think the practical effects were fine from a special effects standpoint, but there's literally nothing in TFA that stood out to me. Every new alien and creature was just a bland, brown-skinned, long-faced, squinty-eyed, grey-haired boring design. Hardly a classic SW alien in sight. The fact that they decided to use practical effects makes purely CG characters like the tentacle monsters and the orange not-yoda all the more jarring, because these obviously fake things stand out even more because of it.

I hate to compare it to this due to memes but it’s the easiest comparison: if someone played Bloodborne and loved it and heard about the souls series I wouldn’t start them on Demon souls. As another comment said, the Best Friends handled this very well, and with a degree of politeness and empathetic understanding that I'm not able to muster right now.
    Speaking as someone who bought the HD Collection and went back to DMC1 after this email, I'm pretty sure the whole series (besides 2) holds up. It really sounds like this letter does not understand the character action genre in the first place, lacks creativity when exploring game mechanics, and just wants a vibe match with Bayonetta 1 - which DMC3 might have given them, had they bothered to try it.
    Getting to the point they said they quit at takes like 45 minutes. Every flaw they accused the gameplay of is partially true, but also proveably wrong. I don't think this is a person who is long for this genre, unless another game in the ensuing years has shaken their misunderstandings out.

    Ok I've only just started playing DMC 3 and from the small amount I've played I can see why people like it and I feel myself stating to like it too . That million stabs move with the lunge feels so satisfying. I also marked out super hard when I was just mashing out buttons to see what would come out and accidentally on purpose did that move where Dante rides a demon like a skateboard especially because I had just seen that in a cutscene a minute before and though there's no way I can do that in the game and low and behold I could. I just need to know however ; is there a way I can fix the fucking camera because it's so fucking slow. Oh and can I heal mid battle because I'm a baby and I'm getting my ass kicked pretty hard. If anyone wants to give me some secret teq that I don't know about that'd be appreciated also.

    • @Dasaltwarrior
      @Dasaltwarrior Před 6 lety +11

      I believe there might be a camera sensitivity slider in the options menu, could be wrong though, and yes there is a way to use items during mid battle, they're assigned on one of the directional buttons along with a map and a movelist.
      Btw, from what I can gather from your comment you seem to have started with 3 which is good because if you did like me and went from 4 to 3, 3 starts to feel really restrictive really fast and it can ruin the early experience somewhat.

      You can use healing items mid-battle, but if you do, your rank at the end of a level gets lower, so if you care about that, don't use items.
      Also, if you're having a hard time, try using trickster or Royal Guard styles. The former is for mobility, which gives you more options for dodging moves, and the latter lets you block and parry attacks.

    TO BE FAIR, Devil May Cry doesn’t become fun until you know EVERYTHING, and the game starts throwing everything. Devil Hunter mode in DMC5 even is boring as hell the whole way through, enemies are easy to plow through, they often die before you can do anything cool, and it doesnt feel like you have all of your tools. But once I hit DMD i started having way more fun, having to use everything I know to avoid dying and to keep my style rating up, and its a rush. I went back to Devil May Cry 3 and i feel it exactly the same. I know it’ll be more fun on harder difficulties, so I’m genuinely just playing it for the story as of right now.

      I mean if his experience with the series is playing that one and finding zero enjoyment in it to the point of hating it, why would he even bother with 2 and 3?
      If you couldn't stand MGS1, would you then jump to 2?

    • @afterpasthours7504
      @afterpasthours7504 Před 6 lety +7

      Because generally speaking it’s pretty widely accepted that DMC1 is the jankiest one, with jumping that will barely ever work and camera angles that will make you sick of trying any directionally sensitive move.
      Even I had a rough time with 1 but I accepted it early on because the big difference being I knew what I was getting myself into, it’s severely dated with mechanics that you don’t see around anymore with modern games, the Resident Evil style of keys to doors that’s so heavily used can get annoying and the water sections can make certain people sick.
      Plus going into something so much older with the mindset of wanting something more like Bayonetta is simply unreasonable.

    • @afterpasthours7504
      @afterpasthours7504 Před 6 lety +6

      Plus speaking purely objectively, he’s not smart to buy 3 different games and pass every other one off after playing the first one. It’s not sensible from a purchase standpoint whatsoever.

    I like that they aren't insulting the guy like the comments here, I think a part of that is they've talked about this before how you should never play a series in chronological order if the timeline mixed around and how user friendliness makes older games and not being able to climb outside of Breath of the Wild.

    • @GreenEyesGian
      @GreenEyesGian Před 6 lety +7

      Joel Rodriguez Honestly I think you totally can because it should be common sense to tone down your expectations the older the game you play.It's like expecting Star Wars original trilogy and expect it to look as good as episode IX.(in videogame case this extends to contents mechanics and so on).I'm not even a DMC fan but sounds like this guy thought he was just going to play Bayonetta with a male protagonist.

    I honestly can kinda relate a bit to this because this is how I feel in regards to Morrowind. I started playing Elder Scrolls thanks to Oblivion and Skyrim and I wanted to check out Morrowind since I always heard it get a lot of high praise, with some people even going so far as to call that game "deeper and more immersive than Oblivion and Skyrim." I bought it on Steam while it was on sale and immediately one thing that made me go "oof..." was the fact your starting walk and run speed is WAY slower than it is in the two later games. I even played a little bit of Daggerfall for comparison's sake since that game is freeware and hell you even move faster in Daggerfall, so yeah unfortunately Morrowind gave off a rough first impression because yeah I'm sorry but I can't stand games where your movement speed is just that slow, and from what I could tell it doesn't get much faster through leveling. I then tried out combat and doing some questing and yeah unfortunately I just had a hard time seeing why this game got so much praise from some older Elder Scrolls fans (combat in particular just doesn't feel very impactful to me), leading me to conclude "I guess, unfortunately, I really needed to have played this when it was new to appreciate it, because seriously I'd rather be playing Oblivion or Skyrim over this."
    Unlike the person who sent that email though I still have Morrowind on my Steam account and I'm hoping maybe one day I can give it a better shot, but those few hours I tried to get into it just left me feeling like "I want so much to like this but I just don't see what other people see in this game."

    This is like bitching that the music, game play, and graphics in Pokemon Blue suck compared to Pokemon Ultra Moon.
    No shit.
    That game is 25 years.
    Why would you expect an old game that people who grew up with it and have a nostalgic love for it, would be comparable to the capabilities of a modern game. Or that it should in the first place.
    No offense to this kid, but that's not very bright. Might as well complain The Creature from the Black Lagoon isn't as scary as the newer It.

    wait people try ff7 and think these cutscenes look bad I hate it? No shit the game came out years ago. Only ff game I ever played was 10 and a friend told me to give 7 a try recently. And I have to say I always thought this game seems overrated but its earned its praise. There are things in the game I hate that were limitations of the time such as some of the puzzles or interactable overworld actions such as cracking the safe for the key to vincent or when you're climbing the midgard plate and you have to jump on that swinging rope. But damn. That game knows how to get you into it I love the interactions between the party and I recently got to the date night at good saucer and the aerith's dialogue tugs at my heart strings. I'm amazed a game from the 90s makes me feel such things and it hypes me up for when I eventually play the remake 10 years later

    8:04 I'm one of those "Why doesn't my gun do damage because bang bang gun" people, probably because DMC2 was my entry into the series and it had really powerful guns, then DMC3's Gunslinger style felt pretty redundant because why would you pick anything other than Swordmaster in a hack n slash game? (granted, Trickster is useful as well).
    But yes, I do understand the "context of the time" thing the Zaibatsu are putting forward. Those games paved the way for something greater.

    Dante final boss is just broken becuase of range and that was the only cool boss that i wanted to play as.
    and the only one that is upset that they aren't putting in qts because i want to watch dante fuck up i don't think he looks cool for a mysterious ass hole to his only relative.and not keeping his living weaponry and not explain why he doesn't have it for the next game .
    dmc 1-2 is no excuse. dmc 3 and 4 could have gave a solid reason on why he doesn't have those weapons besides feeling that i got from dmc 3 is he gets annoyed by his talking weapons so just throws them away

      If they couldn't improve the combat they could atleast improved the enemies in stead of re-hashing same enemies.tthey shouldn't have gave the player the option to go back all the way to the start.they could have atleast explain what you had do with nero grab
