    Cracked glass - gives you an opportunity to replace it by hardened laminated glass, rather than the common window panes that had been used (from the look of it). With laminated I mean two thin layers of glass with a laminate between them - many types exist. The hardening means that the worst that will happen if something falls on the glass, a chip comes off and it still is in one piece - if something notable would happen.

    • @rebeccahedberg6656
      @rebeccahedberg6656 Před 21 dnem +3

      I agree and would it make any sense to get it tempered and tinted a little to keep the cabin cool? Just a thought.

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 Před 21 dnem +3

      @@rebeccahedberg6656 - that's a good thought too. I restored an over 100 years old brick&mortar house. We replaced the wooden window frames by deeper ones that can hold insulation glazing without having to make visible adaptations on the outside. SMC could do that here easily. We used a double glazing with a heat film in it that allows heat to pass in one way but not the other. In my climate we allow heat to come in, but about one month in summer it gets incredibly hot inside. If you want thermal insulation in general you need 15mm (about 3/5 inch) of air gap. This has maximum insulation. The heat film is a metal-like coating on one side of a glass pane and it will be visible to those knowing what they are seeing. The age of this boat would not forbid using it, though.
      In my case, we used the laminated hardened glass in the outside glass of the insulation pair.

    • @TheCrustyCaptain
      @TheCrustyCaptain Před 21 dnem +1

      PET. It's has a high transmittance than glass, is basically indestructible, lower thermal conductivity and ridiculously cheap. Only downside is soft surface, so you need to be careful cleaning. I'm never using glass again

    • @markgallagher1376
      @markgallagher1376 Před 21 dnem +1

      Yes, I was wondering if you have regular plate glass there, what are the chances of getting caught in big waves and one breaks over the boat and smashes the glass? The boat would get flooded pretty quickly.

    • @passinthru4328
      @passinthru4328 Před 21 dnem +1

      @@jpdj2715 Some good points here. Tempered glass of a sufficient thickness would be able to withstand any wave and even support a person stepping on it, but it would have to be sized carefully to allow some differential expansion and contraction of the glass and the wood frame. As described, an insulating glass unit with tempered glass on the outside and laminated glass on the inside would be optimal but the seal between the glass would have to be really good.

    As a professional cabinetmaker I have been using a festool sander for the last 8 years. I will stick with it. The butterfly hatch on my schooner never leaked. Silicone is evil on a boat. It corrodes aluminium and you can’t paint it. You’re doing a fantastic job Alidino. Looking forward to the boat in the water.

    Tip (not that you need it)
    If your under-frame hatch/b'fly frames crack open again (perhaps from iced moisture), a not-too-hard and unobtrusive solution could be to chisel in a rebate for small metal corner brackets. Inside or outside corners. This is something I'm sure you would already know though. Cheers

    The lack of insulated glass in butterfly hatch would I think be most irritating in cold climates, the condensation would steadily eat away at the lovely timbers. In cold places there is still likely to be some condensation. There's another benefit and that is sound insulation, stronger and insulated glazing will keep out more of the noise of the weather.

    Hi you two. Think about getting glass panels that are unbreakable like in cars (I forgot the name it has a formica film sandwich between two panes of glass), and yes sealant on the glass panels not adhesives! Also, likely too late now, but a trick with the seals for the portholes is to cut the joint at an angle so when you glue them it is like a scarf joint.
    You are so closed to splashing it is exciting! Yep stabilizing the wood with epoxy widely used in building knives etc. but on a spar like the bowsprit that will be under tension and torsion the epoxy might crack, unless using penetrating epoxy.
    Beautiful work!
