Scalping Bermuda Grass--How and Why--Fall Overseeding Project

  • Why would you scalp your Bermuda Grass? It is a simple step to do a few times a year to ensure a healthy Bermuda Lawn, encouraging spreading growth. In the fall, if you are going to overseed for winter, it's essential. It exposes the dirt, and you want to expose the dirt for seed to soil contact, and allow the sun to get under the grass canopy for the seed to germinate.
    As part of my Bluemuda lawn transformation, I do the first of two scalps to my front yard. It doesn't get it ALL the way to the dirt, but pretty close. It'll take two mows to get it all the way there, the lawn is thick! See how to set the mower height for a scalp and some reasons why you'd do this.
