Greg from northern Michigan. Good choice Pete ! Had a 20 kW Generac air cooled standby gen set on our old rural house for 14 years with no problems. Racked up about 600 hours of run time. Installed a slightly larger 22 kW standby gen set unit on our new rural house four years ago, also without problem. It has about 160 hours of run time so far. And Generac is American made too in Wisconsin. Pete's a prepper, me too. Great channel !
Greg you made me feel much better about my selection in generators. Yours have much more run hours than mine after 20 years...Generac has done you well. American made is a big plus in our mines. Thank you for sharing with me, and supporting my channel peace!
Better choice would have been a Kohler or Briggs, you can get parts, they are far more readily available at part houses, And they make their own engines. Generac engine parts are only available via Generac. Good luck needing that one part from your local saw shop when your down n out. Dont get me wrong they sell a lot of Generators, price and marketing go along way. When’s the last time you saw any other commercial on tv other than Generac? We have used the czcams.com/users/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!
Thanks for posting. I’ve been trying to upgrade from a 17KW to a 24KW so it will take care of the entire house. I’ve had poor luck with Generac not being able to fill my order and I live in WI. After taking a 50% deposit a year ago I’m still waiting. Don’t forget the other small vent on the house side of the cabinet. I also dig a path around the entire unit in case you have to remove the front panel for an emergency repair.
John I have to check for that vent...I'm wondering if that is the intake for the engine...thank you for the tip. The generator is better protected from snow than the ac units but your comment is excellent that vent was well above the snow. That's not good that you've been waiting that long for unit and put down a deposit. I only had a 5 week wait and that was for the installers to catch up. I'm wondering if you should inquire further with the company you gave the deposit. None of my business I'm only trying to help. Thank you for supporting my channel.

Hey Great Video ! Contemplating a Generator also. You might also look into a backup sump pump called Water Commander. Based out of Illinois. I will have a video on my channel next month detailing the product. It uses city water to pump out your sump crock instead of back up electricity. I purchased the MG36. It ran me about 650$ for the pump and plumbing parts.
Grey water pumps were very popular in our area, until one storm when we lost water pressure...my gosh that was a strange storm. You have a great sump pump...I'm posting a video soon on that. Be safe
Nice setup Pete, I installed a Generlink powermeter transfer switch on my house (It's very small 2 bedroom house), so I have a mobile generator Enermax XP12000EH to power the essentials of my house by turning on each breaker for each circuit I want to power. It's like buying a tractor for insurance, since I've installed it. Only needed to use it once.
Peace of mind. We like to be self reliant in our own way. I should look for a generator as a back up to the pad mount. Thank you for supporting my channel...I think spring is here 65' today.
Charles thank you. When we were first married we lived paycheck to paycheck and saved as much money as we could. Although I'm a business owner my wife is my life partner and has worked very hard and done well in her career. I appreciate your comment thank you again.
You may want to consider building a wooden structure around the generator with solid top and vents around the side something that would give it plenty of space to breathe and that’s fairly easy to remove to maintain
Your install was much better than generator super store of lawton. Nothing painted, still don't have cell phone monitoring I was promised and still haven't been contacted for first oil change even though paid for such service. Wouldn't recommend generator super center of Oklahoma.
I wish they were less expensive...quieter is always better. This unit is much quieter than my previous generator. Generac is working on that. Thank you for supporting my channel. Peace
Another CZcamsr who had one of these Generac backup generators talked about a problem during cold weather. He said the air cleaner filter box would fill up with water condensate and freeze and eventually plugging up an exhaust vent in the filter box, causing oil to spray out from the dip stick tube. You definitely have seen your share of cold winters, so I was wondering if you've ever had this issue?
Cujo I believe the problem is snow gets sucked up through the intake vents and sucked into the air box and into the combustion chamber. So I make sure the engine intake and cooling vents are cleared of snow. I have a video on this last year during the blizzard...pretty cool video. I've had no issues when the vents are cleared and my machines runs every week year round snow or rain. I hope this helps be safe, thank you
Nice unit, I've always been one to go bigger than needed with many things so your not working them so hard and I figure that they would last longer than something running at max capacity. It's very rare for me to lose power here as the co-op that supplies my electricity is very good at maintaining their lines and keeping trees trimmed back. I have a portable generator but have thought about a unit like you have. Take care...
J there's so much peace of mind having a pad mount generator that will run whether you are home or not. I'd save that portable generator for a redundant backup. Our area they are getting better at trees but the infrastructure is old. Thank you for supporting my channel.
I lengthen my run time to 15 minutes. I want the oil to get good and hot to take care of condensate in oil. Assume you have the same cold weather pavkage I will never be without Ng BU Gens again its a necessity just like shingles or insulation
There's also an air intake vent in the back of the Generator also....I just wish Generac would allow the consumer to increase the exercise run cycle back up to 15 minutes......5 minutes is too short in cold weather regions to allow the engine to get hot enough to burn off any moisture in the engine..I suggest running the generator once a month for twenty minutes
Another viewer told me about the rear vent, I mention in it in a Blizzard Debriefing video. I thought the short test time was great...but you raise an excellent point. Thank you.
@@maraudermitchelli Keep an eye on the underside of your oil fill cap, if there's a white milky substance gathering, there's moisture in the engine......I always run my 22kw at least twenty minutes every month even with the five minute weekly exercise..five minutes is fine for warm regions but not in cold weather winter conditions
Nice generator, did you know genirac made air compressors for Sears. Do Not know if they still do, a really nice product. My air compressor is still working after 25 year's. Boy I really liked shopping at Sears. A real American company.
Andrew I did not know that. When I was a teenager I use to wait for the Sears Sunday newspaper flyer sale...man I'd get so excited looking for tools on sale. My favorite purchase was my 3/4" drive ratchet set. Very sad demise my grandfather worked for sears. Thank you for supporting my channel.
Two thoughts here. First thought would be to have that generator sit up higher off the ground since you guys get so much snow. If that’s impractical maybe I take and exhaust snorkels like those safari vehicles have? Second thought there would be a steel cage, cemented down really good to prevent somebody walking off with your generator? Yes, they’re heavy but so aren’t cars and they get stolen hundreds of times each day! Great channel but people can see what you have….to steal next chance they have. Unfortunately that’s our new normal nowadays.
Believe my I know. My company did all of that and had zero percent financing for 18 months so I financed and paid it off in 10 months to ease the financial pain. For me it's worth giving up something to keep my family warm and basement dry. Be safe
hey, my ac/ heat pump unit has a stand it sits on that bolts to the foundation of the house. this keeps the unit way above ground level. I insisted on this method for that reason of snow accumulation around the unit. its off the ground approx. 1.5 feet. I don't have to worry about shoveling it out unless snow is deeper than that height. maybe consider one of those mounts for your generator.
I will post a blizzard debriefing video on this topic soon thank you good comment. BTW I think that is the best option I do that on some commercial units.
Joe I wish you great health and thank you for helping me. Not sure I why i was breathing hard in this video. My blood work gets check frequently as I"m a diabetic, oh and my blood pressure is great and cholesterol but maybe i should see a cardiologist. thank you stay strong.
Hello. Thanks for your content. Having my Generac 22kw installed in 2 days. You mentioned you use a trickle charger. Do you have a video talking about it? How did you set the trickle charger up?
The generator has a built in trickle charger as did my previous generator. I'm not sure if it is included or an option...frankly I think it maybe standard. i hope this helps you ask your installers. You'll love your generator.
There's a difference between a 200A service and multiple 100A / 200A sub-panels. If you have and I lost count 300A or 400A to your home which is certainly possible in a 10,000 ft² home or larger with 4+ AC units plus a couple Tesla cars then I would look at something more in the 50 kW or even larger range. I guess it depends about how often your power goes out and for how long. Short-term outages meaning under 24 hours an air cooled generator is perfectly fine and supplying a lower kilowatt hour than your service is also fine (things will be turned off or on). As long as you understand you have to trade one device over another for priority otherwise you would have an overload. The reason I'm looking at your video and others is I'm trying to justify going from a Generac generator to a Kohler generator. Our last generator lasted 17 years and it's still running, but the stator and voltage control isn't what I would deem two thumbs up. I live in Florida and in the Sarasota area and we were lucky to have only gotten a glancing blow from Ian and we lost power for about 24 hours. Although some areas around us may not have power for days or weeks. The problem also in Florida is sometimes natural gas gets shut off for a variety of reasons or your subdivision may not offer NG. We opted for a buried 500 gallon LP tank. The reason that I even mention this is that your generator's capacity is calculated on liquid propane not natural gas, so your capacity is probably 18-19 kW, you lose at least 20% capacity on NG.
Thank you Your comment is excellent. My generator is just for short term emergency use. The longest my previous generator ran was 18 hours it was 15KW so on ngas it’s 12kw. It powered most of my house so we were careful to manage usage. Good luck with your decision it’s hard to beat these generacs.
I to just replaced my 2003 Generac unit with a 2022 Generac don't forget to keep that vent on back clean I have cold weather kit they do help especially on the oil it gets good shot of warm oil I only use 100% synthetic true small engine oil not car oil they don't have the zinc and phosphorus numbers required Briggs and Stratton, Amsoil and Generac all make great 5w30 synthetic the Briggs and Amsoil are 100% synthetic not sure about the Generac oil but it's designed for air cooled engines Mobil 1 and other car oils are not the ppm on zinc and phosphorus is only 700 to 800 because of emissions they are not 100% synthetic either including Mobil 1 I'm gonna put a silicone oven mat under the battery warmer I have heard them rubbing causing a short on the frame those mats are good to 400 degrees also remember valve adjustments on the engine 25 hours then every 200 hours I have a little bit smaller unit with the new 816cc with hydraulic lifters doesn't require adjustment anymore like my old one they are great units the small engine oil really helps burn off and wear big time sure is peace of mind having them love it

@Marauder Mitchelli I just did some research the battery warmer was redesigned with a pad under the heater part generac addressed it I checked mine and sure enough it has a soft pad underneath the actual heated part I would assume yours does too being pretty new its a nice design probably at least 1/4 inch thick pad
Is there any way to site that thing so it doesn't get buried in snow? Any way to shield it so you don't have to go out in a storm and clear the intake/exhaust?
Jeremy I think mine runs exactly 5 minutes...but I will check. It sends me an email when it starts and stops. We can compare. I'm very happy with the generator I hope you are also. Thank you for supporting the channel.
I am planning a similar installation for a new build -- (2) 200 Amp panels and a 100A in what will be a the RV garage some distance away from the main house. I have been looking at the Generac Back-up Generators -- Still debating on Generac and another Brand like Kohler or Cummings -- My question is are your fully satisfied with the Generac Brand - including the installation and service from the company and or dealer? AND does the 24KW meet all the needs you have during an outage? Thanks for a great video!
RP my first general 15kw was at my house for 18 years and now it is still working at my brother's house for 2 years...I'd say that's very good. He is thrilled with it. The 24 kw is probably 2-4 kw more than I need, as a garage is still in play at my property. It should more than handle my needs. The installation was good, some routing of wires I wish was better...but it seems to run. I'd recommend this brand as 3 of my siblings have purchased it. I hope this helps.
@@maraudermitchelli Thanks Pete! I asked because no matter what the product is today -- someone somewhere will give it a BAD review and describe a problem -- I guess there is no getting past that no matter the product. I also believe that doing the research like that on a product does help discover the good the bad and the ugly? I also believe that "vetting" the company selling the product is important and seeing if they have had complaints written up on them as far as Customer Service issues. I will be doing that with the Generac Sellers in my area where I will be building this year. Thanks again for your reply and your comments. Retired Person
Nice upgrade. I'm looking to do the same. Did you run all new wiring from the generator to the transfer switch or were you able to use the wiring from the 15kw unit?
This just solidified my decision. I have a 3600sqft house with 2 AC units. The 24KW should be more than enough for me. Does this power your whole house or do have to turn off certain things?
Ray a 22kw would have powered my entire house it wasn’t that much more for the 24KW. We also have a hot tub. I’m impressed with the 24 being very quiet. Btw my brother has my 15KW and it’s still going strong. My ac units have a delay start which were installed with the generator but they were problematic and disconnected, my hvac contractor says the stats have a delay on them.
You should look into installing a soft start kit on each of your AC units. A soft start kit will greatly reduce the extra "inrush" amperage when your AC units start up.
Yes sir you are dead on, I teach hvac at a community college and own a generac 22kw that pulled 130 LRA that would stall my generator. Micro air easy start dropped that to 26 LRA and 0 issues now. I now teach and preach soft start technology as it makes your compressor live longer also, big plus.@@frazzledude

John she is so right. I failed to mention in the video that it's security for my family. Bless your mom thank you for supporting my channel...peace
David that is how I feel, I totally agree with you...my wife was hesitant at first until the power went out. Thank you please keep commenting be safe.
@@Deke1 Excellent advice thank you Deke.
There is also an air intake on the back side of the generator.
He took care of the most important parts of the unit.
Yes I forgot...ugh I'm getting old.
Thank you sir...I forgot about that intake...oh boy so far no issues.
Could you do a summer startup? I’d like to hear what it sounds like. Thanks!
Too late to that this year but it sounds pretty good sir...very impressed with the generator. Be safe.
2 great thoughts and it was what I was thinking. Thank you
I would have one to but the cost of the unit, electrician and gas tech killed it for me.
Believe my I know. My company did all of that and had zero percent financing for 18 months so I financed and paid it off in 10 months to ease the financial pain. For me it's worth giving up something to keep my family warm and basement dry. Be safe
Yeah but $12.000 I a lot to come up with, Generator is $6000 and labor is another $6000
hey, my ac/ heat pump unit has a stand it sits on that bolts to the foundation of the house. this keeps the unit way above ground level.
Great video. You should have your heart checked to make sure your arteries are cleared from your heavy beathing. Coming from
Heart victim. Good luck.
@@maraudermitchelli thanks..... I will ask my installer
I to just replaced my 2003 Generac unit with a 2022 Generac don't forget to keep that vent on back clean I have cold weather kit they do help especially on the oil it gets good shot of warm oil I only use 100% synthetic true small engine oil not car oil they don't have the zinc and phosphorus numbers required Briggs and Stratton, Amsoil and Generac all make great 5w30 synthetic the Briggs and Amsoil are 100% synthetic not sure about the Generac oil but it's designed for air cooled engines Mobil 1 and other car oils are not the ppm on zinc and phosphorus is only 700 to 800 because of emissions they are not 100% synthetic either including Mobil 1 I'm gonna put a silicone oven mat under the battery warmer I have heard them rubbing causing a short on the frame those mats are good to 400 degrees also remember valve adjustments on the engine 25 hours then every 200 hours I have a little bit smaller unit with the new 816cc with hydraulic lifters doesn't require adjustment anymore like my old one they are great units the small engine oil really helps burn off and wear big time sure is peace of mind having them love it
Kevin awesome comment great tips I read it 3 times. Thank you for the great advice.
@@maraudermitchelli your welcome yeah sorry my grammar is poor took a therapist 10 years after high school to figure out I had learning problem if its hands on then I'm fine I can read great I think that's why it got over looked, your electrician is really good mine was put in by same guy both times he does really good work I'm very happy just got finished couple weeks ago I did break-in myself 1 hour at a time small load I wanted the 5w30 synthetic in it before 20 below zero weather gets here in Northern Illinois very rural farming area lots of wind it probably been ok with cold weather kit but I know my dad would of done that so it felt right lol you have nice set up, take care
Not really it needs to breath building a structure around just may cause overheating. Thank you for commenting and trying to help.
My new 24kw runs for 7 minutes on test cycle.
I believe it was new and they had to rewire the grounds on ,y panel
Where in NY? Im out near fredonia, NY
@@blakeehmke007 my daughter went to school there I’m 18 miles east of Buffalo in Clarence. Thanks for saying hello
OMG is this video about you or the generator?
Thank you Robert
No need to be rude. He was explaining how it works for some people who may be considering a generator or doesn’t know how they work.
The 15KW is 20 years old
You should look into installing a soft start kit on each of your AC units.
No shit. I think i put this generator in. You're out by clarence? I remember this one.
Who do you work for? I can't see your picture to agree. But if you did you did a great job.

How many SMM’s did you install? What loads did you shed? Thanks. Great video
Joel I'm not an electrician...please explain your question and i will answer you may need to do it in a separate comment so I see. Merry Christmas...You're smarter than I
@@maraudermitchelli I believe he is asking how many load shedding modules you installed and which appliances you hooked them up to..
My modules are for the electric stove top, electric oven, and pool pump. Those small boxes with the orange light are called load shedding modules.
how many square ft do you have?
2 floors are about 5k, basement is another 2.5k. Thank you for supporting my channel.
The bigger the house the more to deal with and endless money and upkeep. No thanks. Can't take it with u anyway
I agree with you, it's part of owning a house no matter what size you have to keep up with it. I hope you stay with the channel. Be safe.
They did short the run cycle my generic 14 kilowatt generator only runs for 5 minutes for the test cycle seems to be long enough it does cool hot exhaust out of their jobs side so I guess the motor is getting had enough we'll see
Thanks Richard mine is running well, I like the shorter test weekly.
It's okay "Sir talk a lot". I could give a darn what you do with your house, or your generator. But most likely, you'll explain it to death for three or four more weeks.
Thank you Again
