Becoming a grumpy old man driver. I’m suffering myself, looking at diesel autos, it’s inevitable!
Being trying to find a big auto luxobarge to insure, but definitely wayyy to young to need one
@@ldwp6395 Iv been looking at Jaguar S Types! Couldn’t be more old man worthy!
@@matleith I've been looking at xj6's so it dont make my back any worse
Well the "Internet bmw crowd" is a funny thing... Been in it for around 15 years, lived the "only e30 is a real car, the new plastic cars are shit", then the "no fluid changes, read the stickers dummy it says life time oil, no change needed", then the "e60 is the worst car ever"... So Dan... I my humble opinion, no mechanical device using oil goes without servicing it... Or if it is cheaper drive until the box goes and get a "good used one", both ways have their fans.... If it was my car and the milage is correct, would change the oil to prevent low oil /oil contamination and thus high gearbox temperature... Which is the thing that kills them in the end
Thanks for the videos and thumbs up
Good car, good dog. Good vlog.
I would argue it’s one of the most reliable cars. My e60 has been in the family since 2006, and now I have acquired it. It’s currently got 277000 miles, and the engine has never been opened! I can’t think of many cars that can do that.
My 2009 e61 525xd is at 456.000 km and only recently let me down, multiple errors due to faulty ecu relay and intermittent throttle failure. Runs fine now. As long as it remains reliable, road legal and looking fairly decent there's no sense buying anything else.
Nothing wrong with an E60 lci or pre-lci, they are good cars you just have to know how to maintain them, DPF's can fail/block up but thats because the parameters have to be met for a regen, normally down to a failed thermostat or glow plug or egr fault, none of which is that difficult or expensive if you're handy with the spanners, a diagnostic tool like INPA or Carly will pay dividends. Swirl flaps can fail but nowhere to the extent that people make out, they can be deleted very cheaply. Control arms can be expensive if you go OEM but the Meyle stuff is good and not extortionately priced. End of the day these are cheap 'luxury' cars so dont go in thinking you're not going to have to spend money on it, there are no cheap luxury cars. And yeah no such thing as 'lifetime' oil...
Good post
Perfect timing just opened CZcams and got the notification
Hope it made good car status will find out
My ex had a e61 530d auto, and it was the best daily ever, fucking loved that car 😊 Bristol to Heathrow in 56mins once, heated leathers and all that etc slept in it, smoked around feeling like a boss, 100% would get one when i have the chance. Although my Arosa is a beauty and cost 5% of the beemer 🤷♂️
My b6 avant has been running strong for 7 years now. still my #1 good car :)
I got an E61 about same time you got yours. Also got 164000 on the clock. Have just had to sort the turbo out (thrust bearings went), but otherwise been absolutely faultless. Not a rattle or squeak either. Lot of car for the money!
Great content mate found your channel from the E46 M3 as you do when you buy a car you spend your time looking up the same car lol 😂 in my case was the E46 M3 love the channel and the M3 content keep it up.
Good video on the good car. Lists 3 things, holds up 4 fingers 👌🏻 I’ve ended up with an 05 mk8 civic 1.8 for two years now as well because nothings really broke, gets 40mpg to work and back, and everything else seems expensive after paying £900 for it. 100% agree with what you said about people being unable to maintain speed, as bad as people that selectively speed until someone’s behind them.
NO ONE can keep a constant speed, on ANY road. I too feel all the pains, Danny.
You can take it out of park with the key out. Lift the cover from around the gear selector and there is a hole on the left side you can put a screwdriver in and pull back to release park. It is in the manual and used if the car dies and need to tow or pull on to a low loader. Can you guess why I know about that?
Completely agree about speed on the motorway. I’d guess majority of cars have cruise, I don’t understand why people don’t use it. Does my head in when I try over take in my truck and they then decide to speed up but I’m limited to 56..
Completely relate to that and when you drop back in behind them they slow down again 🤦🏻
That cruisecontrol complained sounds so relatable. Most of the time it's more comfortable to just drive without it simply because of other people.
I’ve found the best way to have a pleasant motorway journey is to either be the fastest thing, or the slowest thing on it. 65MPH - everyone passes you. 85MPH - your passing everyone. Sitting at 70 - 75 will just cause you to get snarled up with the idiots
Even towing at 62 can get you in trouble with the idiots
With fuel prices the way they are now I've taken to doing 60 and it's so much more relaxing than constantly accelerating between 60 and 70 with the idiots in front of you. Mostly lane 1, occasional lane 2 to get past the trucks.
Fuel economy is improved by about 20% over doing 70 in my car, and the average speed over say 250 miles only adds about 15-20 minutes to the total journey time.
Early evening, windows down in the summer with some good music playing makes it even better.
Oh my god, I bloody love that dog! My old boy Charlie would love her (he'll be 15 in August!), but feckin' dogs are just brilliant anyway. I can never trust a man who doesn't like a dog!! 😉
Ann lee.... worth the watch just for that ref danny 😂😂
Mate our vans are limited to 70 so annoying when you go to overtake Mr 68mph then get half way past and then he wants to sit at 70 for the next 8 miles 😂
Damn; gotta find that sweet spot
Cracked me up. Quality video.
I remember back when Mr. Denzel was bought and thought that car was pretty nice. Think this one still compares quite well aside from the early gremlins but I’d have one I must say!
struggle to maintain 70 up hill on motorways in my EK3 unless I drop it down into 4th, damn eco sh*tbox :) perhaps I'll get an E60 for my next commuter when I'm bored of the EK3 rattles and lack of comfort for 50 miles/day
It's probably worth changing the gearbox oil but I've read stories about the gearbox failing after an oil change - give it a Google - it's probably just a coincidence. I've changed the oil on both of mine a couple of times (C5 Audi S6 and Merc E350) and it's worth doing as a normal service item but read up on the procedure before you do. You have to change the filter as well as the oil and there's a special procedure for refilling, you have to empty oil, change the filter, fill it up, then start the engine, get the box up to temperature, THEN add more oil with the car still running. When the engine is running oil circulates the box and you can put more in. Bit of a knack to it but fine if you do your research before hand and have a proper pump to put the fluid in.
If there is a really old oil, it created a lot of deposits. A new oil has fresh solutions that can dissolve these old deposits, they then travels and can clog channels and so destroy tranny
Reminds me a lot of my Vectra C Estate 2.2 Petrol on 165k. All the odd electrical stuff, never missing a beat, pain in the arse suspension jobs and the auto box failing being the thing thats likely to send it to the scrap yard.
The dog is amazing, such a good listener.
The only thing I don't like about my 320d daily is that it's not a wagon. Thanks for the video Dan. Especially enjoy the canine factor.
Not that it’s missing 2 cylinders ?
@@dannyDC2 No, you're right. I'm just in denial and I have to rely on my old 535i as an antidote to my cylinder envy. I did think about mapping the 320d but I just can't stand the belching black smoke out the back. My Mrs' has a mapped 120d and it's pretty quick but it's like a James Bond smokescreen when you nail the thing! No bueno!
Hits 2000 : track 10 never forget it.
without it though we'd never have had the "drain plugs" clip 😅 I've rewatched that so many times
I had a garage near me have a go at changing gearbox fluid. I specifically asked if the can do it being a German specialist garage. And they said no problem. They said when I picked up the car that they only got 3 litres out so they only put 3 litres back in but in sounds weird now strange constant noise like gravel. Unhappy.wish I'd left it alone. E82
Get it flushed mate
change your oil and filter mate. it will be better then ever. do not flush it, only oil change will not kill it:)
E60 common mistakes
DPF failure (due to thermostat)
Engine temp failure (2 x thermostats)
Rear hatch wires (both sides)
Panoramic roof rear little window not opening properly
Keys not opening or closing car (antenna in the rear hatch/or wires, or key itself (no signal)
Rust on rear hatch (open the glass)
IDrive Failure (booting or not working at all can be repaired about 350$)
Rear screen wash pipe broken or glass opening button broken
Failure or third stop lamp (all or some led broke, can get only OE part)
Failure of screen and light wash pump
EGr failure (only pieburg works)
Dan, I do LOADS of motorway miles. M1/18/180/62 some A1M on your patch & quite a bit of A1 as far as Newark ish. Use CC 96% of the time. Always set to 74, seems to be the best speed, can get away with 76, for short distances, to get away from the twats. A1 I do 66, as it's a VW T6 so I'm limited to 60. No speeding tix in the 5 ish years I've been doing it. 63 in a 60 smart motorway limit etc. All good.
Far form perfect, but potentially less hassle than limiting to 70. Keep on keeping on. You Redzz
Subscribed after watching the bit with the van haha, I use CC every day and can't stand those who can't maintain their speed. 07:12
This is an incredible car from BMW:)
Need to get yourself a fully loaded LCI version lad!
Nah
had a mechanical parking sensor on my old mondeo too, what a feature!
perfect time the change gearbox
Great video mate 👍 defo agree about motorway drivers. I have to just sit in lane one otherwise Id go mental 😆
Bought my 2006 ,e61 530D ,in 2013 flew to Italy to buy it at that time I saved 50,000 sek sold it this year for 52000 sek ( I bought it for €9000 that was 9.50 per sek)
This car Was called futura 240 hp diesel, everything except leather, so 9 yrs i had the car,I bought a 2016, f36 420i, prefer my old car. The e61 is a great car I drive a lot of MB 220 cars the xdrive on my old e61 gives 100 times better handling.
The zf gearbox tends to leak (filter gasket gets stiff and leak) and Oil level gets low and the Oil hot.
Got a leak now zf 6 speed. Not sure where it's coming from. They think it might be sump. Think previous owner didn't use OEM filter. Low on oil so need to sort ASAP
@@eddy45686 they can leak in more places , for one the seal where the cable goes. Be careful not to drive it low on fluid. Good luck
i have a 07 plate 520d e61, 50k on the clock, my first lux car ive owned going from sporty hacthbacks, i love it everytime im in it, great car
I’m sorry but 50k miles engine must be very very choked up with carbon
@@piovo5222 seems completely fine
@@MannLiikeP yep seems fine as diesels are strong but if you were to open that engine up it would be full of carbon everywhere. Could not have a single drop either but 50k for a diesel especially in 15 years means that it’s only done very short journeys.
I made a video how to fully service the gearbox mate: czcams.com/video/yAjVsJHS65E/video.html
Nice one
Have to agree with you about the maintaining speed on a motorway, sooooo annoying 😂
Did the oil change on mine and I personally thought the box wasn’t as smooth afterwards. Was still ok but regretted doing it, suspect I was a little unlucky. My sisters car (same one) had done more miles and felt silky smooth, weird!
Mine isn't too bad just feels like it doesn't know what it's doing sometimes. Could be the torque converter getting leggy!
Probably didn’t put enough oil. These car will eat themselves if they are run with low oil.
Lucas trans fix oil is super stuff
Hey Danny, are you planning to go to the Ring with the E46 this year?
Not much more annoying than using cruise control on a motorway, it highlights that people can't keep to a speed 🤣 and when people accelerate as you're overtaking
All you need is a good ol' F-150 or GMC truck....wait your over there Nevermind....maybe a Raptor?
Can deal with just about everything on the road except people who can't maintain speed, proper grips my shit
Agreed
YES, good car!
Dalmatian
Didn't you also have to change an air bag on the rear from what I can remember. I wonder if you took this on a track and ragged it like you did with the Audi a6 Avant, it would develop a transmission/drive-train issue? 😂 Out of the three daily's you have had i feel like this is the one you have taken most care of in terms of how you drive it.
Well yeah. I did do a list of everything I'd changed on the video but cut it out cos was boring
The airbags actually lasted longer than the front springs...
@@dannyDC2 Lol true. I always had a soft spot for that Audi A6 Avant you had. I like BM's too but always avoided the high mileage one (which i could afford) as it seemed like i always knew someone with one that either used oil or had timing chain issues. You haven't had any of that which is good.
Question is why this 525 d tax is £340 a year, and I have lci 530d and its £250 🤷♂️ never can understand car taxing.
The lci have lower co2 rating thus lower tax and are m57tu2
On my 3 series with the stupid key like that, if you push the button to stop the engine and then once more with no foot on brake it will put the ignition fully off with the radio and stuff off. I use that for when it’s on the ramp.
I vote good car. If it gets places other things can be forgiven.
EDIT: 20 seconds later you said the same thing. Must watch whole video before chatting shite.
🤣🤣
I've had my C6 A6 Avant (3.0 TDi) 13 years now and just hit over 230k miles. I've read both sides to the 'gearbox oil' change issue for years, and wrecked my head wondering which advice to take - especially early on in the cars life when it had fewer miles and was still worth money. But being a cheap b@$t@rd, I decided to leave it be and see how it goes, and well, hauls as good now as it ever did - zero deterioration at all (and I do a lot of 'toy towing' too, having also had the 'manual rear parking sensor' installed). Each to their own of course, but as this is my daily driver, a work horse and a towing tank (and a big 3 litre oil burner also helping!), I don't rag the @rse out of it like the other toys, so it literally has been mechanically faultless the entire time (silly bits like parking sensors and window regulators being the only things that have given grief over all that time). My advice then? Don't drive it like a tw@t, and your gearbox will be just grand with the oil she came with! 👍
Picked up gt7 Dan?
Hi Dan, Would you recommend the vacuum brake bleeder?
Yeah I think the hand pumps are great. Fittings aren't the best but will do the job
Pagid for paggered brakes 😂
Dog's wondering who you talking to man
Mi Band 6 Gang
Miss the Volvo just because it was square AF!
Good for transporting white goods
I wouldn't buy an e61 ever again tbh.... And I had the 550i. Loved the sound but everything else, no thanks.
Just glad you said sound and not noise👍
I just bought a 525d Touring as my daily. One thing I didn't see in your video was if this is a 525d or 530d?

2005 E61 530d since 2013 had problems but I fix them and keep going 😁😁
Gearbox oil change every 50.000km engine oil every 10.000km
you're wasting your money on oil
@@dannyDC2 Better than waste them on new gearbox 😁😁
Not sure with how much ZF oil is 😂
