I think people should just leave it alone. The Van Halen family doesn’t want to do it if someone else wants to put something like that together and go ahead but we have hours of videos and live footage a bunch of albums, live albums a bunch of pictures magazine covers we have all the palms just go back and reminisce. You don’t have to do a tribute Eddie’s not gonna be there and I don’t particularly wanna hear other people playing Eddie stuff. I see that on CZcams constantly just leave it alone, we already have the music just go listen to one of the records that should be enough. It’s gonna have to be enough.

I think there pissed off that after leaving Micheal Anthony out of there last tour. he has been stable with Hagar. and would rather not go back to the unstable ego driven thing that was called van halen. Anthony and hagar are class acts that found each other. I would bet my life that it is such a better atmosphere in the circle, or chicken foot than it ever was in van halen. for one , no one is left out, all the guys get credit. no bashing each other, no jealousy, and really no narcissist. they are older guys that still love to rock. hagar had connections way before he teamed up with van halen. and I think deep down, the van halen bros new that hagar could do all this stuff on his own. they weren't use to that. And I do think who Anthony y went with. tells all!!

Wow! I'm the caller into Trunk about this. LOL. Alex is enjoying his family life and keeps busy. He's an upbeat guy with great sense of humor. He's not the depressed recluse Sammy portrays him as. He's not interested in Hagar or his tour. Yeah, he's still unhappy with Hagar for exploiting Ed and his disease to sell his book. Sammy knows this is why Al doesn't want to speak with Hagar and isn't interested in joining him on stage. When Alex's book and audio book comes out in October he's gonna do interviews. UPDATE: Coincidentally, just saw Alex at a local neighborhood spot. He's NOT gonna be appearing with Sammy at the L.A. gig.

They literally don't even need a singer. It could be Alex and Wolf, and they can have a different guitarist for every song and the entire concert can be a musical with Eddie's guitar parts as the highlight. That would still be a multimillion dollar tour. I would definitely go.
I have met Alex, he is done with this! And he is trying to deal with losing his best friend! Everyone seems to forget that Edward Van Halen is dead! Roth in the early days worked in the studio , but live , vocally ...he sucked ! He got away with it with his stage show not his voice. Sammy live today even with the drop D tuning, is passable but that is it. Joe is a great guitar player, but without ED, it's just not Van Halen . I would like to see a record of studio tracks never released come out if possible ! I Feel Alex just does not have the drive to play without Edward Period . They rode the waves together through thick and thin and now the seas are still , RIP Edward !

Him and his brother were figuratively tied at the hip as musicians since they could pick up an instrument as kids and started playing music together. It was always Eddie on guitar and Alex on drums and they came as a pair.

I could understand Alex's outrage about Sammy exploiting Ed's substance abuse if Alex--never mind Ed--was even 1% apologetic to the fans about Ed's 2004 performances as a result of his substance abuse. Sammy stating a fact while apologizing to the fans is not nearly as bad as Alex denying it, yet Alex is cutting off Sammy for stating the truth.
Was it up to Sammy for stating the truth/exploiting Ed's disease to sell books and profit off Ed? Alex never said anything bad about Sammy in response to what Sammy wrote. So, Al took the high road. And, Alex is entitled to live a Hagar-free life. He's not married to Hagar. He never shot back. He just chose to move on and live a Hagar-free life.

the sammy tour currently is better than any slapped together roster of rotating players for a tribute tour. the band is tight and cohesive, satriani's playing and tone incredible.
Sammy's concerts haven't been worth a crap for a couple decades. I saw the dude from 73 with Montrose thru his solo career 74-82 and then the early days with VH. Since 2000, he's old fat and lame.......

After you do something for such a long time you get to a point where your just done, seems like that's where Alex is. Sammy saying Eddie was a drunk explains a lot to fans who deserve to know why VH has been so chaotic over the years but it doesn't take away from EVH's brilliance.
I hope the caller is really Alex’s friend and that what he says is true. Thank you Alex for all the great music and the inspiration you gave to me as a drummer. I can only pray that one day you would do some sort of clinic/ educational video.

I'm not supposed to say anything but couldn't take Eddie speculating that Al might show up at Sammy's gig knowing how it isn't gonna happen. I was envisioning people flying into LA and staying in a hotel in hopes that Al would be there. LOL. Wanted to help prevent that.

@aceeg69 exactly. It's allegedly a tribute to Ed but not a single picture of Ed included in opening video montage or at any time during the show. It's just Sammy's tribute to himself. He'd be playing 600 seat clubs based on his solo career if he wasn't in VH playing the music Ed wrote. But all Sammy could do was bash/exploit Ed in his book for the sales. Hope Sammy is enjoying the money he's making playing the music Ed wrote.

I have to say though, Sammy's "Best of All Worlds" tour sounds really good. Even though Jason Bonham is damn good on the drums; it would be great to see Alex on the drums. Hearing Michieal singing some songs is pretty awesome too. He does a real good job. Even though Joe Satriani isn't no Eddie. He kills the guitar. It's worth going to the concert!

I know Alex doesn’t owe us a damn thing, but I would really love to see him play one last time. I know he lost his best friend and we lost our guitar hero. Seeing Alex is the closest most of us would ever get to being able to say goodbye to Ed and Van Halen. I wish it could happen. With or without Sammy.

I know Sammy was treated like shit at a certain point by the brothers, but the book was harsh. Especially considering that Ed was very ill. Incredibly hard to walk that back. Michael Anthony is the best example of how to act like an adult.
I think it’s pretty obvious to everyone that Eddie and Alex were extremely difficult and toxic to work with. Unfortunate fact because EVH is my hero but man, those guys just knew how to wreck opportunities from 1995 onward. From 2007 onward they paraded around with a caricature of Roth, released an embarrassment of a live album with him, etc, They should have mended their fences with Sam long long ago and gone out the right way. Van Halen fans are no doubt treated shittier by their band than any other fans. Even after Ed’s death, it continues.
But that doesn't mean Sammy should have exploited Edward and his disease by writing all that stuff in Hagar's book. He trashed Ed AND Al exposing tons of dirt then wonders why Al won't have anything to do with him. And Sammy said he regrets it, so don't defend it. I do not blame Al for cutting ties with Hagar after what he wrote in his book. Everything you mention has nothing to do with this call.

When Wolfgang replaced Mike on bass Ed should have informed Mike in advance what was happening. He should not have taken down Mike's image on the front of the VH1 album and replaced it with Wolf's picture on the official fan site. When Ed did a phone in interview on Howard Stern when asked about the bass slot it was fine for Ed to say 'My Son is IN' (fair enough) but Ed shouldn't have then gone - 'And Soft Soballewski can do whatever the hell he wants'. Sammy should have controlled his anger motivating that 'Crazy Eddie' chapter in his book & not included it....Edward & Alex didn't take away band rights from Mike in the 1980s as Noel Monks book suggests. There are those that dispute this. Even if Mike signed rights away for the 2004 tour to happen. Roth is capable of far greater abuse than anything Ed & Alex ever committed. (Paul)

This is just my opinion, but I think Alex needs to get over Sam's book and while it was not Sam's place to say things (true or not ) about what was going on with Ed and his personal life, Alex needs to step up and be the better man and forgive Sammy after all, Alex is not called Rev for nothing....he is an ordained minister and being so, he should know that you are supposed to forgive others. He should practice what he preaches! Alex is a Great drummer and I respect him as a drummer but not as a person.
Is Alex required to have Sammy in his life forever? It's been 20 years since they were in VH together. Can't Alex move on? I know Alex. He's a great spirit. Very generous. Down to earth. Ive had Hagar's book for a long time and after reading it I didn't feel any vibes that Hagar was slamming EVH. The book was really about Hagars account of his life, career and relationships. He even discussed about his racist father but I didn't feel any vibes that he was trashing anyone. Alex didnt exactly say what was even false in Hagars book pertaining to either Van Halen brother. Uh ,Roth as usual is a different story. Im out😮😮😮😮

I was one of the 14,000 or so that saw the best of all worlds tour on July 20th at Jiffy Lube live in Virginia.
It was quite moving, but also very well done.
Great musicians, a great song list, and definitely could tell they had practiced. They nailed every song, including a bit of Dance the Night Away that really surprised Sammy, and Joe was on fire, unbelievably, the entire night!
Alex is mad at Sammy about what he put in his book, but, none of it was a lie. Sammy wrote the truth.
Just because it's true doesn't mean you have to expose/exploit it to cash in. It was disgraceful and Sammy has said he regrets it. So don't defend it.

Eddie does not a tribute. His musical legacy is quite alive and well. The Wolfgang gig with Foo Fighters was enough. And that's it ... nothing else needs to be done. Enjoy all the Van Halen stuff... .it's on record, on the Internet, and there is good 40 years of material from the very early demo days to last concert.

I'm the caller. I'm a VH fan who knows Alex from the local neighborhood. Spent a lot of time asking him questions about all of this stuff. I'm not supposed to reveal what he says, publicity, but couldn't resist cause I didn't want people to buy a ticket to Sammy's show in hopes of Alex showing up. And the speculation made me nuts. My speculation is that Alex was probably getting a lot of bull from everywhere as he was trying to get the trubute for Ed together. I think what broke the camels back was when Newsted went and spilled the beans after being asked by Alex to play bass. Allowing his anger to instigate him to write that awful chapter ‘Crazy Eddie’ in his book RED…I hope Sammy won’t be angry with me for saying this but he should not have gone into details about Ed coming apart at the seams to sell the book…Ed didn’t drink because he was ‘a bad person’ , he drank to blot out fear. He ALWAYS did….Fear of an audience with stage fright,,,fear of other people in this ‘fame’ business, and when he was diagnosed with that damned cancer his drinking went worse than ever. In his book THESE were the issues Sammy should have been educating the public about. Not the gory details because he wanted to ‘get his own back on Ed’ because he felt so angry about him. Alex lost his mind selling all his gear. I guess he lost his heart and soul when eddie died. Or maybe the stories about eddie and alex are true. Look I went to every concert from 1986 to 1993 in Dallas, Ft Worth and Austin. Some were 2 night gigs and my favorite 2 were 12/4 & 5th of 1991 and I have every ticket stub to prove it. I have girls panties from both Texas Jams. It was to hot to have on clothes, damn it man. But I've been a fan since the 70's in Elementary, to Jr. High and up to Eddie's passing. (RIP)

So let's be completely honest; Eddie changed the face of rock and roll guitar playing more than any guitar player in history. And Van Halen as a band produced hard rock music that rivals the top 20 hard rock bands in history. That being said; (as the caller stated) David Lee Roth is nuts, but so was Eddie and Alex. These three could not get along with anyone they worked with, including each other. The VH brothers fired every singer and producer they ever had and they would get into fist fights with each other, way into their adulthood. All had extreme substance abuse issues and none of those three showed any professionalism whatsoever. Van Halen was certainly one of my favorite hard rock bands of all time but that doesn't give them a pass for bad behavior towards others. For Alex to be mad at Sammy for telling the true story of why VH thing didn't work is, in opinion, ridiculous. If Alex wants to hide his brother's shortcomings that's fine and even admirable, but Sammy wrote a book about his career in music and being a member of Van Halen was his biggest musical accomplishment. People are interested in why it ended.
Facts. If anything it shows how small minded Alex is. Sammy just told the truth, and a truth that wasn't some big secret to begin with. It was obvious EVH was in a bad place for a stretch there. There is loyalty and then there is being delusional. Maybe Alex feels guilty for enabling his brother's "disease". Who knows. I saw Sammy's current tour a few weeks ago and it was damn good. I also saw Mammoth WVH recently and it was a great show as well.

Most tribute shows are effing corny ESPECIALLY when you are paying tribute to someone as great as Eddie. So long as we have whatever recordings they made between 78-84, I'm good. Now releasing vault material is another story, but that has nothing to do with a tribute show

The returns from this little tour are drops in the bucket compared to what Hagar has earned on his own completely independent of VH. The brothers Van Halen (a very dysfunctional drama filled pairing) wanted Sammy to fail, but he is a better businessman that the EVH/Alex camp and he outsmarted them. Satch does not need the money and Satch has never been about money in the first place. Take your bitterness and your hate elsewhere. Sammy et al are having a great time playing great music to keep VH music alive. Hagar put in the work to get the tour financed, so he deserves the rewards. Your small minded bitter accusations tell more about you than they do about Hagar and Satch.

First off, Eddie wasn't and isn't the guitar king. Second, from everything that has come out over the years, maybe Eddie, Alex and Roth didn't treat Mike like shit, Sammy wouldn't have had a problem with them. Also, when you choose to be in the public eye, your life is an open book and that is a choice they willingly made.
First off Eddie WAS King guitar ...The Guitar Institute of Technology thought so in 1982,,,,So did LES PAUL,,,So did COUNTLESS name players in the industry & also producers like Quincy Jones & Ted Templeman....Second, Ed & Alex could have been more diplomatic about the Mike/Wolfgang replacement move but the brothers were nowhere near as cruel to Mike as ROTH was.....Also, being in the public eye doesn't give people a licence to be vicious or calculatingly cruel to them .
