  • The situation is dire in the Kingdom of Rohan. The wizard Saruman, their friend and ally, have betrayed them and has gathered an army of evil creatures in the fortress of Isengard. Gandalf the White and powerful allies come to the aid of Rohan, but will the Rohirrim prevail? This video attempts to represent Tolkien’s version of the battle. It includes the Battle of Helms Deep (Battle of the Hornburg) and the Battles of the Fords of Isen.

This project took roughly 300 hours, a third of my entire vacation was dedicated to this video. I hope you find it entertaining and as always; I am very open for feedback, both positive and negative. I strive to achieve perfection, but that is not possible, and many will of course dislike my accent. However, I am very happy with the end result, and believe it’s the best effort I could have given.
The battles portrayed are known as: The First Battle of the Fords of Isen, The Second Battle of the Fords of Isen and of course the Battle of Hornburg. We see the important roles Erkenbrand, Grimbold, Elfhelm, Théodred and Eomer plays. The Galadhrim Elves are not present at all; that of course belongs only in the movies.
A special thanks to BFME Reforged for granting me permission to the Sauron clips! Check out their upcoming game here: czcams.com/channels/CLe3p0r-qSEfcWTTJWR04A.html

@@LoreOfTheRingsYT The Elves needed to be there in the film though, because otherwise the Elves did fuckall, except for one line in an extended scene which does nothing by itself. "This is what YOU men, hobbits and Dwarf must acomplish. We Elves could help but we no longer give a shit. Bye." Besides, its so obvious that the Elves were Tolkiens' favourite race and for everyone who never reads the books to despise/hate the Elves due to their lack of involvement is almost a stab at Tolkien himself. The prologue is what causes the issues, the Dwarves are spoken of as underground Hermits with an obsession with shiny stuff, but the Elves are shown as a race who will stand with 'humans' against evil. Yet they do nothing to actual assist the fellowship other than a few times which are shown in the films.

Thank you...I always found the portrayal of Rohan in the movies to be slightly off point...As it comes to military it gave the impression that they were merely just a few peasants when in fact they were still fierce fighters, they had men, they fought back against Isengard aggressively and nearly won The Battle of Helm's Deep all on their own which while considerably unfavorable to them at the onset was not nearly as desperate as what it was made in the movies, which I'm not complaining at all, yet the endless oceans of orcs shown in Two Towers is not truly representative of the even struggle which lasted for some time...

Will commence with spelunking your playlists, am especially interested in learning more about the Humans who sided with Sauron.... don't think any fought for Saruman, as that was, if memory still serves me, just Goblinoid w/Trolls and Wargs. Perhaps not factually, but on a strategic level absolutely. It is safe to recognize that the orcs would besiege the castle (and probably take it by storm as a relief force from Rohan could easily besiege any army trapped in the valley). It is a safe bet that Theoden would hole up in the castle instead of taking to the field. Thus Gandalf's relief force would almost certainly encounter a siege or a battle. Both would give a considerable strategic advantage to the defenders and put them in a position to win the siege/battle. Theoden's mad dash was a brilliant move on his part as the morning sun, the sudden sounding of the horn and the fearsome presence of cavalry out on the field would no doubt shake the morale of the besiegers. No doubt reports of Erkenbrand's army must have come down to the orcs, whose commander would've created chaos on the battlfield by trying to pull some frenzied orcs back from the battle to muster a rearguard against the oncoming force. All that chaos was just the icing on the cake.

After reading the two towers a few months back then watching the extended version of the two towers again, it bothers me how the forces of Rohan look so weak and helpless, which is very similar to how the siege of Minas Tirith plays out in The Return of the King. They basically get routed and totally defeated until Gandalf shows up, which isn't really what happens in the book at all as the video shows. Part of me wishes the Amazon TV series just did the events of LOTR books like HBO did with GOT where each book got a whole season. That way stuff in the books that's left out of the movies for time constraints can be shown.

Because in a film if the bad guys are easily taken down you lose tension. You can't really believe the Rohan/Gondor could lose their respective sieges if every scene shows them wrecking orc shit. And if you don't believe there's a chance they'll lose there's no tension, the battle becomes a formality.

Important to point out the sequence of events that lead to the retreat and defeat of Isengard's forces:
    1) Aragorn talks to the armies, warning them of the dawn and what a nrw day might bring. This causes some of the Dunlendings to be nervous.
    2) Dawn breaks
    3) Some murmur spreads in the enemy's army, probably about the huorns' sudden appearance. One can imagine the fear of being surrounded being ever present in the minds of an assaulting army.
    4) The horn of the hornburg is blown, and the sound causes many of the orcs to throw themselves to the ground as it echoes around in the canyon seeming to come from everywhere at once.
    5) A great shout arises from the besieged forces and the king sallies forth with his cavalry. Note that they are riding out unopposed as the orca have just thrown themselves down in fear.
    6) At the same time, Eomer and Gimli sallies forth from the caves, causing all of the enemy to be driven back on all fronts.
The enemy loses simply because they are broken morally. The fear of being surrounded causes all cohesion to break down and they flee. Then Gandalf and Erkenbrand shows up just to hammer the point home. Note that at no point is cavalry charging into armored orcs standing in formation, as happens twice in the movie and is not how cavalry works.

The idea of adding elves to the battle was imo to show that 1. elves are in decline (only managed to muster 150 or so men) 2. the very dramatic scene of dying Haldir to show that elves immortality is in fact sort of a curse. Elves don't truly understand what it means to die so the slow motion Haldir dying, looking at his fallen brothers, is completely "baffled" by the cold running through his body and his eyes blurring. A great scene imho. 3. we saw what Legolas can do with his bow. And that's only 1 elf. DON'T TELL ME YOU DIDN'T WANT TO SEE A WHOLE ARMY OF LEGOLASSSEEEESSS IN A BATTLE?!!

Very good video. I like also how you generally included also the Isen battles and everything that lead up to the Helms Deep defence.
The book version generally looks more realistic and from that immersive. It always stuck me odd that Theoden could not muster more troops for his defences and how basically there were no troops west from the Edoras for that matter.
But each version has its merits, I still think that the movie version did its part good for the "wow" effect, by adding Elves into the mix, and the final arrival of Gandalf and Eomer was also quite cinematically well done.

Interesting but the part about "orcs placing the fire orthanc" is conjecture. The "fire of orthanc" is mentioned once by Aragorn in surprise after a hole was blasted in the wall. It is unclear if it's a weapon or an object or a spell. It is likely that the "fire of orthanc" was Saruman's wizardry coming from the tower of Orthanc as displayed in the 1978 animated movie and it is also the simplest explanation.
