The lyrics of this song reflect sorrowful memories of the civil war the city " Beirut " witnessed from 1975-1989...

Fayrouz is more than a singer in the arab world, she is imprinted in our childhood memories, she represents joy, comfort, nostalgia and a tender embrace ❤ she is basically our fairy godmother. Thank you for this reaction

Fairy Godmother is one accurate description of her archetype. Nothing starts your day better than morning Fairuz tunes.

You described it perfectly. 3 generations in my family listen to Fairuz, and my daughter is beginning to get into her music, making almost 4 generations.
She was our comfort during the war, our happiness in the car or on the home stereo, and our pride as Lebanese people for decades.

There is a deep meaning in this song! It is not just song, you should also research why she created it. It is very emotional because Beirut was teared apart several times and rises up again every time. My father lived his childhood in war, entirely..

I'm listening to this 9 months after the fact so my comment may be lost...but Fairuz is a legend on so many levels and for so many Arabs. But first I need to address the connection btwn Spain and Arabs. The Arabs were in Spain for 800 years and "Arab" influence is woven into Spanish culture and music. Secondly, this song is an anthem for Lebanese (and countless others) especially bcs it came out during our bloody and senseless "civil" (uncivil) war that took the lives of so many and crippled Lebanon to the point that it has never fully recovered. Thirdly, she also sang for Palestine and our loss (I am half Lebanese, half Palestinian). Her velvet voice has been a balm and therapy for many of us. I would venture to say almost all of us. What makes her that much more special is she is also Christian and she has served as a unifying force in a world that too often breaks down over human drawn lines that divide...The day she dies, we will have lost a beacon of light in an often dark and hopeless place.

LYRICS IN ARABIC translated to English
To Beirut, from my heart, peace to Beirut
He went towards the sea and the houses
A rock like the face of an old sailor
It is from, the spirit of the people is wine
She is from, whose sweat is bread and jasmine
    How did it taste?
The taste of fire and smoke
For Beirut, glory from ashes for Beirut
From the blood of a boy carried on her hand
My city extinguished its lamp and closed its door
In the evening, she was alone, alone and at night
To Beirut, from my heart, peace to Beirut
He went towards the sea and the houses
A rock like the face of an old sailor
You are mine, you are mine
Oh hug me, you are mine
My banner, the stone of tomorrow, and the wave of my journey
The wounds of my people have blossomed
    Mothers tear
You are my Beirut, you are mine
    Oh hug me.
