  • Robbie Shakespeare and rhythm partner Sly Dunbar have long been recognized as one of the most prolific and innovative partnerships in reggae. “We don’t fear to work no time” says Robbie in this wide-ranging mid-90s interview. They never stood still, recording with, among others, U Roy, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear and….Serge Gainsbourg. They reveal what holds them together, and why Chris Blackwell signed them to Island Records (Sly’s dancing shoes!). Robbie recalls first seeing Sly in action at the Tit For Tat Club, and how they later took dub to an international audience. Steve Barrow asks the questions while Rick Elgood and Don Letts do the shooting.

Its good to see how humble these two giants of reggae music are; After being involved in bands must of my life i have met a lot of musicians that ant half as talented but there egos brings all kinds of distractions, we may take these two simple in the way they present themselves but they are far from that its all about the music; not about personal feeling of jealousy of anthers ability's to play well, these guys work above small mindedness for the greater good encouraging each other to their full poetically and ability's working for each others betterment within the music and the music industry in Jamaica and you can hear their brotherhood in the music they produce honest and clean; music comes form the hart and when played at its best when its tuned by the soul, I grow up listening to Sly & Robbie in all there different studio productions from 1970's and on wards and like a lot of people have been well entertained over the years thank you guys for a life time of reggae innovation and hard work may God continue to bless your works Bless

They don’t interrupt one another and Robbie blows his cigarette smoke away from Sly. Mutual respect helps maintain a successful partnership.

I disagree about the Chris Blackwell part. I feel like if I put in the work I deserve what I deserve. I'm fearful for what the person did for me and I expect him to want to be compared as well but I dont feel like I should be short changed either.
