Okay so my theory is that this song is basically her mom speaking talking about marinas dad and the abusive relationship that they might of had she conceived marina on the day she turned seventeen while he got to walk away and live his upper class life and she had to deal with it on her own. That's just my thoughts also it ties in with marinas 80's style clothing
I love this song but structurally I always found it odd, as where you might expect a middle eight the song actually tails off, leaving a feeling of melancholy. But between swatting away the addressee (you don't know f*ck about my family) and the last triumphant chorus as she enters the tunnel we see that she has won her mental battle with her demons. She comes out of the tunnel and delivers lines whose implications are I think easy to miss. She says she never felt like a princess but she USED to kid herself that this was how things were meant to be. In other words, that she was trapped in a structure not her own. But, by implication, this was NOT necessarily how things were meant to be. So she has gone from battling with whomever it is has put her down relentlessly - questioning her identity, her family, her childhood - to finding away to assert herself. She has used anger, humour, energy, withering contempt, put downs and a celebration of her own freedom. That said, I don't think it matters who she's addressing. It's the how and why and their effects that count: the social and psychological constraints and the damage they cause, the impact on her personal freedom. She needs to fight against being suffocated. The song tails off, then, with lines to suggest her being older, wiser from surviving the fight - sadder perhaps, from what she has learnt about herself and others, but more self-assured. In the video, she looks directly at the camera - confident, though alone. Somehow I wish I could be there and buy her a drink. She looks lonely. After all, she keeps me company in my darkest days. Anyway, this is probably over-analysing, but I do think TFJ songs deserve analysis: they come from a dark place, but they're full of life. I love this album like a sister and best friend all rolled up in one, so I thought I'd spend some time thinking about one of my favourites. If anyone has got this far, I am stunned and amazed and thank you for your patience with my ramblings.

it feels so bittersweet that i've been listening to marina since i was 11 and in a couple of months i'll be 17 - she has been such an important artist for my entire adolescence and that is down to the utter brilliance of her lyrics, music and artistry. the family jewels is, in my opinion, one of the best albums in modern pop music. it sums up so many themes of isolation, insecurity and complex emotion that so many people can identify with. she is extremely underrated even though more than a decade has passed since the release of TFJ, but i'm so glad that she is more and more widely appreciated. this'll be the first song i play when my birthday comes. much love

People all like "omg what happened when she was 17??" I don't think the exact events matter. EVERY female can think of a pinnacle time in our lives growing up when a male has undermined and used and abused their power over us. It could be an authority figure, or someone our own age, but I can think of several instances around this age where the various men and boys in my life showed me they would basically always be the ones with the power, that I would never be as equal or important as them. That to many of them, I was just an object. These instances have varied in levels of extremity and hurtfulness. I used to think boys and girls could just be friends, I use to think they actually gave a shit about what I spoke about and my talents and interests, boy I was so let down growing up. I know this is a sweeping generalisation, and not all men are like that yady yada. But what I'm trying to say is during late teens and early adulthood it's common for many females to learn to many men, they are literally just an object, and will never be as important as them in their eyes. And this is what this song is about to me, I don't know if it's exactly what she was going for, but that's how I interpret it.
It's a societal issue. Hopefully in the future things will change, with a new generation brought up free of the misogyny and sexism which is rampant in the world. In the mean time, we should all do our own little bit to defy the system. If you feel put down it means you can rise higher.

People all like "omg what happened when she was 17??" I don't think the exact events matter. EVERY female can think of a pinnacle time in our lives growing up when a male has undermined and used and abused their power over us.
It could be an authority figure, or someone our own age, but I can think of several instances around this age where the various men and boys in my life showed me they would basically always be the ones with the power, that I would never be as equal or important as them. That to many of them, I was just an object. These instances have varied in levels of extremity and hurtfulness.
I used to think boys and girls could just be friends, I use to think they actually gave a shit about what I spoke about and my talents and interests, boy I was so let down growing up.
I know this is a sweeping generalisation, and not all men are like that yady yada.
But what I'm trying to say is during late teens and early adulthood it's common for many females to learn to many men, they are literally just an object, and will never be as important as them in their eyes.
And this is what this song is about to me, I don't know if it's exactly what she was going for, but that's how I interpret it.
It's a societal issue. Hopefully in the future things will change, with a new generation brought up free of the misogyny and sexism which is rampant in the world. In the mean time, we should all do our own little bit to defy the system. If you feel put down it means you can rise higher.
