The decking is all done! We still need to build the handrail and apply the stain, but we think it really helps tie our home all together.
I've watched from the start never commented. But today I'm saying happy birthday sir. You are a real man boss. Father, homesteader, husband, provider. I wish I had the opportunity to build a home and life like you. Blessings to you and the family sir.
I don't think I've ever seen a home built with so much patience and attention to detail. I'm a builder and have been a builder in several states but I have never seen any tradesman put this much love into anything. There are a hundred things I've watched Spencer do that I know make a better product in the end. I realize he's not a tradesman and does not have a huge construction background but he seems to see several steps ahead and also has the foresight to see what will come in the future as far as maintenance. Well done. You both make a good team. Patience seems to be both of your strongest skills. Much love.

I've come to appreciate the effort and storytelling involved in putting together an episode. My wife and I binge watched every episode in a week. After we caught up we tried to find others doing an off the grid documentary style like you yours. All I can say is you've set the bar incredibly high. We can't find anyone doing a similar story format that isn't boring tells the story of a journey and less like a how to. I think that's what makes it great. It's genuine. Thanks for all your effort and time as well as sharing your journey with us. Its been a joy to watch.

I'd call him a gifted carpenter. Handyman is more like someone who dibbles and dabbles and half fixes things but to neccessarily to specification nor for it to last long.

She's a doting mom, comedy relief, Handy woman backup, painter extraordinaire and amazing videographer/editor.
2 things:
1. Always pre-drill deck boards at the edges.
2. Glue does an amazing job at bringing split wood together.
You forgot Spencers OCD - he would always know there was a cracked deck board 😀
you can clip the head off a screw and glue it in the drill hole so it looks complete
It's really not my area of expertise, but I've seen evidence of the glue joint being stronger than the wood?
Spencer as I have watched you do all this construction for your home it amazes me. From my recollection you had no experience in carpentry, everything you have done is research, study, and then do. You've done a great job. I wished that I had the opportunity to find someone willing to try something like this in my life about 35-40 years ago. I know that perhaps you both might not think this is so special, but it really is. Love your home, they way that the both of you work so well together and enjoy each episode.
i so much enjoy watching your progress, you remind me my late wife when we were younger. She passed away two years ago after 58 years together. You two clearly love and enjoy each other deeply. Keep the fun in your marriage it will pay off greatly. I especially enjoy your out takes at the end of your videos. Keep them coming, I look forward to many more.

You may want to consider supporting those stringers from somewhere else.
I'm sure the top will snap for some of the same reasons the deck board snapped when screwed in at the corner.
Not trying to pick apart your work, just bringing it to your attention so you can add support under the stringers before it's closed in, if it's being closed in.

Oh my goodness the baby is growing, how beautiful she is. I love the little headbands she wears. I just loved the time my daughter was born and her baby years .... of course I loved all of her years. She turned 40 this year. Enjoy all the time you can with her and there are never too many hugs and kisses. My sons turned 48 and 50. I have also run out of baby grandchildren, my youngest is 10! What a wonderful couple, their respect and dedication to each other is heartwarming. My husband of 25 years and I would never of stayed married if we built a house just the two of us . Spencer, you might want to consider putting either joist hangers or other reinforcements on those Deck Stringers. It didn't look like a lot of wood grain is left, to support you at the top Tread / Riser, for walking up and down. If you had to guess the weakest point on those stairs ..... what would you say.
Just saying ... safety first. Good luck on the future.
You could try to brace them but he has driven screws through the riser of the stringer at the thinnest point, where all the weight is hanging. They need to be replaced. Great videos though.

I grew up in snow country in rural Washington. When my folks were building our off grid home, we got hit with a late snow storm in the spring. My brother and I were tasked with the job of sweeping/shoveling the snow and slush off our uncovered sub floor.... What a week that was. We sure take weather apps for granted!
