  • Robert Sturman has a unique perspective. From behind his camera he is witness to the vulnerability, the beauty, and the human elements that connect us all.
Take a journey with him, as he shares stories from around the globe and the astounding images he has captured.
We are a global community and his camera is the illustrator. A dedicated yoga practitioner, photographer Robert Sturman has increasingly focused on capturing the timeless grace and embodied mindfulness of Asana in his work.
His portraits, whether set in the lively streets of Manhattan, the expansive beaches and canyons of the California coast, the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the timeless elegance of Walden's New England, or the bleakness of San Quentin Prison, remind us that there is beauty everywhere.
His stunning repertoire runs the gamut from yogis perched on rocks surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, to African orphans practicing yoga in Kenya, to breast cancer survivors, bare-chested and scarred. In addition, Sturman has worked extensively photographing war veterans who have embraced the practice of yoga to heal PTSD, in an effort to help change the heartbreaking statistics of veteran suicides each day.
In Sturman's own words, "I often think of Rumi's words 'I can't stop pointing to the beauty.' That feels right to me."
Sturman's honors include Official Artist of the 47th Annual GRAMMY Awards, 2010 FIFA World Cup Artist Representing America, and Official Artist 2008 United States Olympics.
Sturman has been the subject of two separate New York Times articles celebrating his photographs of yoga from around the world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Wow. I am completely blown away by this TEDTalk. So passionate, so strong, so eloquent and heartfelt. So much more than pictures from a camera but rather poignant slices of humanity that when brought together tell us a story about our period in time. I applaud Mr Sturman for his work, his dedication and tireless effort to make us all stop and look around us and place a higher value on all life and that we each matter in the eyes of our creator. I thank him for this inspiring work.

I really can’t say enough about your Ted Talk. I laughed. I cried. I felt inspired and in awe. The storytelling with your images are woven together so beautifully. It’s simply quite wonderful in all the ways one wants to feel during (and after) a talk. My brother hosts a meditation night for his AA group. In a few minutes, he’ll share with the group your talk, and then they will sit for a 15 min meditation. I am sending love and gratitude your way!

I’m sure those at the Braille institute, who couldn’t see your work, still got to witness your humanity and the beauty you share! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
