Little disappointed with the low output on 222MHz. I am guessing do to harmonics. I wonder if there is a firmware hack to increase the power a bit more.
Could you check the output power on other freqs other than Ham bands. Curious if its firmware that prevents more power except for Ham Bands.
Also, Can AM be turned on after the MOD is performed for other frequencies.
I noticed on their website they have firmware for this radio. Wonder if its an update and I also wonder could you put the firmware on any of the clones of this radio.

Better Baofeng 10w
I am going to post a link to your video on facebook. Nobody in my area has ever had one of these. I got mine yesterday and after a little learning curve, I am liking it.
I ordered one about two weeks ago and I've watched every video you've made on it.Seems it has more features than I knew about it when I placed the order
My portable VNA and Rigexpert all have their own adaptor kits and my service analyzer has 2 at least. One company also offers them in a roll up bag which is really handy.
I just want to say THANK YOU for the information, of turning the radio on first... My head was spinning for two days lol
Lifesaving tip on the cable plug in order cheers mate.
Hi, I purchased one of these, it got here 3 days later, I have been having a blast just getting to understand how everything works, I have watched several of your videos, in fact it was one of your videos that made me purchase one. I ordered it off Ebay from an outfit in Texas, got one with the white screen. One thing that had me wonder just a bit was the fact there was tape on the battery contacts so no contact on the battery till I located that and pulled it off. Perhaps not a real problem but there it was. I have programed mine using the old software on my system from programing my little Boefang radio (recommended by the tester when I took my HAM test years ago). I like the set, while I haven't been out of town yet to make any contacts with it (I am the only HAM in my small town) reception is outstanding.
I downloaded the manual and printed it out. Much like the early Japanese manuals there are technical terms that don't translate well. There's also an anachronism warning against modifying the radio to receive cellular phone signals. Strangely enough, American scanners still have the obsolete analog cellular phone frequencies blocked out.
I have received two from the manufacturer as free samples and they have sent the software and the radios are excellent. Voice prompts are clear, easy to use the menus from the keyboard and clear transmit and receive audio.
I wish all the radios had a menu system like this one.
bought two of them from your link. should get them by April 25th 2023. I've purchased several of the bf flavors over the years and have about 10 different versions. Only happy with the original so far as it has the least issues. I did test many of the antennas that came with the radios and they typically get a 2.0 or worse SWR. I have a few that are tuned better and are actually closer to 1.4 1.5 swr. so better to purchase a good antenna but beware even those are bad or copies of good ones that aren't worth the money. I would forget about 1.25 as it just doesn't work no matter the BF copy.
I ordered one from your Amazon link, I haven't received it yet but look forward to it.
I've ordered one. Hopefully it'll arrive soon.
Hello, I have been able to install the software in the description on my computer, thank you very much for the explanatory video and the software,
Best regards
Glad it helped
i have done what you said but it will not talk to the radio. what is the serial settings in the usb com port please
spud vk8zwm
This radio seems to get better and better, with each video I see! Even the programing software looks easy to use. If it was waterproof, I would pick up a few.
I should try to see if it is waterproof hey!
Better to pop a non waterproof radio in a waterproof zippy bag, than get one that is waterproof, as they usually have different sockets for charging, in fact I think the baofeng waterproof radio's use the side contact pad charging which is a pain.
I ordered the Anysecu with programming cable. Yeah not as easy as just plug it in and it works. You left out some important details. Thanks.
I'm having trouble with the squelch setting. Even on the lowest setting, it's still a bit deaf to weaker repeters. I live in a rural location so repeaters are rather distant. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 73, VE6XTC.
Hi.
How do i install the Quansheng software? When i download it, i get by install the message: Unable to open archive file.
How do i fix this? I download it from the Quansheng website in your discription.
Have downloaded the software but when I try to run portable station cps setup I get this message “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer” any ideas?
Was also unable to download software in Edge or Google as I got the message "Unable to download securely" Downloaded ok in Opera.
Cheers

The function on the radio where you can detect what frequency is in use from a nearby transmitter....what sort of detection range does this RX have....?
As soon as i plug radio in to the Baofeng cable , i have 2 cables tried both . the radio goes into transmit mode , and then I get a red led, not a blue led , using windows 11, using the software on this site , any ideas ?
Have a question plz help. Just received my UV5K. And it does not switch to channel mode. It just stay in frequency mood. Pressing function key and 3 to switch and it does not only stays in frequency mood. Don't know what's wrong with it. And it was updated to new firmware.
Good review.
Does anyone know if there is a way to display a single VFO or group of memories instead of two simultaneously?
After updating unlock 18-1300, from stock firmware 31, and using RSSI bar 78, why does the LCD sometimes give an error when we PTT (freq 142) and also sometimes go blank, finally I restarted it back to normal. I tried again on uvmod with firmware 26, unlock 18-1300 and rssi bar 78, still the same symptoms as above. Does anyone experience something like me?
I have the Anysecu version of this radio. Tried using both Anysecu and Quansheng software and editing memory channels. But, and it is a big but the software for some reason does not let me enter repeater mode. Keep getting an out of frequency error. Any suggestions?
Hi Mate , could you please help me with a query … I’m trying to work my quansheng radio and when I set it to a certain frequency, I can’t transmit … I can only receive.. any suggestions to fix this
could anyone help me, i went to the quansheng website and downloaded the program software and it will not let me open said software file. I am currently running on the latest software for Mac OS.
Your videos about the UV-K5 have made me decided to buy a pair of them.
I have already downloaded the programming software and the new firmware, but reading how to upgrade it I find that the instructions in English are some confusing.
Can you make a video about how to upgrade the firmware? I think it would be very useful for all UV-K5 users.
Tank you very much.
Can you use chirp to program it? I've ordered one and should have it next week.
Hi! I've recently purchased a Quansheng TG-K10AT and I cannot find the programming software anywhere. The one at the manufacturer's site seems to be firmware, but I can't even download that, since it's under a password :(
Do you happen to have software for that other model or generic Quansheng software? Thanks!
Hi I hope all is well with you and your family. I downloaded the CPS software but it's asking me for a password whenever I go to read from the Radio. Can you help me out if possible, please?
Can you explain this software to me.
On chirp for example i have a frequency that is 146.640 with offset of -0.6mhz. In the UVK5 software if has spots for tx and rx frequencies and frequency steps. Does this mean in the UVK5 software i would enter 146.640 in receive frequency and 140.640 in TX?
I have got the LSENG version of this radio as my first amateur radio, was hoping to be able to use it for work as they use VHF coms on the 164.000 to 173.000 frequency range, I am able to receive the coms on it but i am unable to transmit using it so have to use their radios which aren't as clear on the receive. Is it possible to unlock it to be able to transmit on this frequency range or am I to be confined to using works radios?
Thank you for this video, very helpful. Only one question: if I will put a name in the channel name, it won`t be visible on the radio screen, in the software it will.
It stays CH-001, is that normal?
I bought a device but it doesn't scan the 2 meter band. Is there a way to fix it?
Would it be possible to achive Tx=0.5 W on the 446MHz band?
Maybe using an atennuator ont he antenna?
Can someone confirm this : using an external mike I cannot go in TX when a signal is received. PTT on the handheld doesn't have this problem. Or I am missing a setting somewhere 🙂
Busy Channel Lock is Off.
Just got a Quansheng uv-k5 works , would like to see a csv or a way to export my Chirp file. Thanks for the software link also the firmware updates. 73
I like mine so far. I haven't done the UHF spectrum analyzer test yet. I am looking for a mac/Linux friendly programming software. Has chirp been updated yet?
The AM sound quality on the airband is terrible! Any fix for that?
I have a question.
South Korea's amateur frequency band
Can I limit it to 144-146Mhz and 430-440Mhz to tie up the frequency?
Could you check if the radio transmits on 447mhz? It's the Aus UHF CB band. Not type certified but it'd be nice to yell at tradies over the air in a pinch.
How do I check the firm ware version out of the box
I wonder how to program an Offset for a repeater in this software, like -1.60000 or +1.60000?
Esse radinho é tão bom que já estou querendo pedir outro!🥰
You have yours? Having fun with it?

anyone have a save file of freq list? i hope its programmable by chirp soon so i can just import stock config freqs like FRS marine and so forth
Man, you still have to have those funky speaker mic cables to program? I was hoping they would've set up usb-c for programming by now.
I wish radios would offer an option to cycle between frequency and name every 5 seconds. Perhaps the company is watching the comments and could create an updated firmware for this SIMPLE feature?
Can you make a firmware update video for Quansheng UV-K5? because its documetary not english. thank you.
Does it access the U.S SatCom sat freqs well? asking for a friend lol
ANy way to allow TX on 477MHZ? I want to use it on CB bands in AUstralia.
It's a nice radio that it can receive 6 meters 52.525 OK. Sensitivity was good measured
on my service monitor on the other bands. The alphanumeric display is great, 9 digits. A nice radio like the TYT TH-350.
Hello, quick question, can you add alphanumerics to a saved frequency without using software? Thanks
How do you install the programming software?
Informative thanks. McAfee constantly stops the PC software in your link from running on my Win 11 laptop. Says it's a virus
Hi Hayden, as previously mentioned I purchased one of these radio's, mainly for air band and unfortunately it is very poor ! distorted audio and generally poor reception, but I guess you get what you pay for? but if you just want the other features of the radio then it's still quite good value for money, just don't expect great things from the air band !
i cant for the life of me upload CSV files to the software, any insight on this?
Anybody knows how to fix the sound on AM airband ?
DHL says mine are coming today. Likely won't be able to play with them until tomorrow though.
my PC wont let me download the programing software because its not in English. i cant get the software..
Can one transmit on 868 mhz with this ?
Excellent, just received mine in the post today. Does anyone know what the " SCREN" option 57 does?
I would love to know that as well
Ive tried to follow your video, but when I connect the radio using the bafeng cable there is no blue light, I have tried every COM port but they all say "Radio cant connect". Ive tried different USB ports on the computer as well. Is there a trouble shooting guide for this? There always seems to be a step in these tutorials that doesnt work as shown then I have no idea how to fix it (Im very new to radios)
Double check the Baofeng cable is completely plugged in. Some of them you really need to jam it in to get it to work.
Got mine about a week ago and was rather concerned about the software warning from my computer, however I bite the bullet and downloaded it and no problems so far. Easy to programme by hand and once you get the hang of the software, its so easy to programme all your local repeaters and upload them. I have one observation that I don't particularly like, it appears you cannot have one line showing alpha numeric and the other line showing frequencies, both have to be one or the other. I got mine for £23 and lets be honest, that a bargain and no mistake, even if its just for repeaters or when walking down the beach, if you loose it, so what......
i keep getting an out of frequency error. You did not. I manually programmed mine, easy enough. Did you do anything in the setup of the software as you had success?
@@custisstandish1961 Sorry you appear to be having some issues. I did not change anything in the programme settings and up to now have not had an error message of any sort. Just out of interest, what frequencies are you trying to input ?
It's just a Windows security thing. Only certified software and drivers are 'allowed' to be installed. Quansheng didn't bother doing that. It doesn't mean that their software is inherently unsafe in any way.
What is "VFO OPEN" option?
Hi so is the reciever on this radio any good outside of the ham bands or is it good for what it is a ham radio? Thanks
I’ve listened to Airband, UHF CB, FM radio and a few other UHF channels so far. It’s been fine

Still going through the playlist, thinking about getting one of these myself. The 1.25m band is vaguely interesting; does the power limit on that band change with any of the community firmware builds?
Since the radio appears to have been originally designed and intended for 2-meter and 70-cm bands, the hardware isn't there to fully support the 1.25m band. The existing circuitry is not tuned for that band, thus the significantly lower output power.
How many characters will the channel name display on the radio? Will it display lower case characters? Thanks!
The answer is 10 characters maximum, both uppercase and lowercase allowed. The radio centers the name on the display. Also the CPS file is XML, so it can be edited outside the CPS.
cool Video, any way to get TX on Airband?
will it tx on PRM466 frequencies? and or what is the frequency steps? Thanks Much
Thank. Dave
Hi, I have the programming cable, downloaded the software and yet the station won't connect to the PC in Windows11. The program doesn't see it even after setting the COM port correctly. Do you know where the error is? Thanks for the advice.
Ahh I only tested in Windows 10. Have you checked the USB cable is in the device manager properly installed? Might need to get the drivers - I think if you google Baofeng programming cable drivers you should find them.
@@HamRadioDX It helped to download the latest cable driver, for Baofeng cable CH 340 from Feb 2023. Now everything works. Thank you for your help.
What is the difference between the k5 and the k5(8) other than looks, is it worth it getting the (8) model? thanks if anyone knows!
Pretty much exactly the same internals. Just a different screen colour and cosmetic differences
ordered mine it arrives in a few days
Sweet what do you think to it Eric?
220 MHz requires a 220 MHz rubber duck/antenna, which everyone seems to fail to mention. The stock rubber duck does not cover the 220 MHz 1.25cm ham band. Also, scanning on either A or B memories, or VFO causes the backlight to remain lighted during the entire time scanning is activated. Battery life will be shortened as a result, unless the firmware update addresses this malfunction, or there is some way, which is not obvious, to turn off the backlight while scanning.
The backlight being on while scanning irks me so much.....Such an oversight. I tweeted Quansheng about it. They said the demand is low so they won't be providing firmware updates for now but will let us know later.
@@KartikSinghlive Made in China says it all. Even the Baofeng UV-5R is smart enough to know the light does not remain on the entire time you are scanning. Start a campaign and create more interest, so they make the necessary changes to the firmware. To have the backlight remain on the entire time you are scanning on a battery device is a complete engineering oversight. Someone should make a video about this lack of user programmable feature.
I've setup Ch19 manually ..476.875 ... but when I press the transmit button is says "DISABLE". No TX.

I cant get the software to read the radio, tried everything !
I tried this and my virus software said the programming software is a virus! Is it worth disabling the virus scanner and powering through?
im just getting into harm radio what do you recon should i grab Quansheng UV-K5: or baofeng bf-f8hp ?
I have only tests the UV-K5, I can't comment on the BF-F8HP, I don't have one.
@@HamRadioDX Thank you i ll grab the UV-K5(8) :) i double checked apparently you can unlock the next gen K5 same way as well as you did it with the K5 since the only thing that differentiates both devices is design and speaker. Thx again
I just got one of these and had a go with the software. I must admit that it was easier because of your videos. I was confused by it only having 14 VFO 'channels' that could be edited .. it seems that there are 2 for each of 7 bands? Anyway the main thing is that the .cfx file that gets saved is easily edited with Notepad++ say (if you are ok with the format). I found the AM signal from the local airport pretty scratchy but it does work if you can clue into the accents. I have a Tecsun 660 that can't pick up 101.2 here ..but this one does fine .. which reminds me to try them together on the airband channels. I get the impression that there is much more to this beastie than meets the eye, it's just a matter of finding it. Ummm regarding my 'having a bloody laugh' comment ..that's slang for ..Jees that's expensive. Sorry if it seemed rude 🙂 BTW Power on the K5 and plug in the cable before connecting to the computer.
Terryol
I ordered one through Amazon Australia which took about six weeks to arrive, however, it is the European version covering 144-146 MHz. I would have expected it to be 144-148 Mhz model.
How can I change it to cover the Australian VHF and UHF bands?

Thanks
to find the right com port check device manager then manually input it into the software. you might have to restart your PC
I want that dummyload ??
Software works fine but there is a drawback (at least from my perspective) in that it doesn't (unlike CHIRP) seem to allow me to copy and paste from, say, an excel spreadsheet of channel info. Each channel needs details typed in one entry at a time - and the cxf file is really to complicated to modify in spreadsheet mode.
@@HarryHamsterChannel Agree. One other little foible I noticed is that programming F2 (short press) to start/stop channel scan only works for start scan. You need to press the Exit (D) key to stop the scan. Sure hope CHIRP gets it on board sooner rather than later.
Wasn't that an attenuator I saw on the cable going to the SA? That might explain the low power reading. You said it was a dummy load, but it looked more like an attenuator to me.
It was, but it’s zeroed out in the SA. -20dB
The local 220 repeater is so close that I can talk on it with one watt into the dummy load, so I should be full quieting on 250 mW.
Mine arrived last week. AM airband receive very distorted, but ok on weak AM. I use at Local airport historical aircraft museum to listen to local traffic, so badly distorted hard to hear, but if I remove the antenna and stick my finger in antenna socket, much more readable.
Do you have to spit on your finger first? If so is Tea or Beer best?
I find sucking it work better
So mine arrived in the post today and I can't seem to program either from the device or via the software. For some reason it won't accept 446 frequencies. The software errors with "The receiving frequency point does not match the frequency step value." This is while trying to set 446.00625 with a step value of 12.5kHz. Anyone have any thoughts? Also I can't seem to figure out how to update the radio firmware as I can't find an English installer.
Change the step to 6.25 KHz. You can do that in the menus
@@HamRadioDX Thank you I feel dumb AF. I felt sure I'd tried that but followed your instructions anyway and you're absolutely correct. Thank you very much. Sort of hope this gets Chirp support soon and a decent Reddit sub springs up. But thank you for this support and your videos.
@@daveedee3626 No worries at all mate
Thanks Hayden, I will try the software cause after 5 minutes, my keypad appears to be locked. Can't get into menu's, can't unlock with the lock key/F button. I am stuck, no locked symbol on the screen, I dunno what I did.🤷♂️
Isn’t there a key symbol on one of the buttons? Was it locked there by mistake? You got your radio in the mail quick!
@@HamRadioDX yeah, it came super quick.
Yes, one button has a key on it but a long press doesn't do anything. That's all the instructions say.
I'm gonna try reset it with the software, thanks for the link and other links.👍
I don't understand why they don't make it to where you can program it with the USB-C cable instead of having to buy a different cable or at least include it with the radio. Thanks for the video!
:( so USB-C is charging only, no programming?
Amazon took 1 week, backlight stays on when in scan mode, any fix ?
En la opción dejar en "off" y alli se apaga el brillo de la pantalla fue la unica opción que encontre.
In Sweden we have 8free 69 mhz frekvenser can it transmit on 69 mhz?
No sorry it won't
Just got one of these. Been trying to program it but it won't connect. I've got a couple of programming cables based on CH340 chipset. From different suppliers. They work fine on my other radios but on the Quansheng it will not connect (this includes the cable shipped with the radio itself). I don't see a blue light on the radio when I connect it either so wondering if there's some sort of physical fault on the handset itself with the ports. Such a shame.. have left a message for the supplier. Can hopefully resolve it. We shall see.
It has to be turned on before connecting the cable. it has to know that it is connected before trying to listen to the PC. So switch on, plug in connector and then open up the software
I have the same problem with a ch340 cable (the only one I have), which otherwise works fine with the baofeng uv5r. I can't read from the quansheng via chirp or cps, it says connection to radio failed. No blue light
@@pierpaoloscian5926 Turn on the K5, attach the cable and 'then' connect it to the computer USB socket. Then open Chirp or CPS.
The biggest obstacle I can see so far is the antenna. They probably have the output on 220 scaled back and the output on 6 meters disabled because the supplied antenna is intended for 2 meter and 70cm bands. The QB-25 came with an antenna capable of operation on the four bands that the radio offered.
@@HarryHamsterChannel This is true, and probably why the tri-band Baofengs come with two antennas.
The backlight on this radio stays on while scanning and there seems to be no way to turn that off. This irks me so much.....Such an oversight. I tweeted Quansheng about it. They said the demand is low so they won't be providing firmware updates for now but will let us know later.
The only workaround is to set ABR (backlight) to off before starting the scan
PROBLEM SWITCHING FROM VFO TO CH MODE
Heads up! If you haven't used your Baofeng programming cable for a while you will get a rude surprise in the form of a message telling you that your cable is not supported. You will have to figure out a workaround. I know that the cable is good because it works on my old XP computer.
My workaround was to use Device Manager to rollback the driver to a 2007 version.
They made a new cable a few years ago, this fix the driver problems with the older cable with windows and I have had no problems since that time .
