It's a nice radio, Sensitivity is OK measured on my service generator except the AM aircraft band. Anything above 7uv's, audio starts to distort. So much for listening to the aircraft band. Good program software.
AM radio dude you made a name for yourself on CZcams everybody's Talkin about how good you are making the right choice and radios everybody's following you brother keep up the good work you're saying you got a lot of balls calling out these companies now we know what radios to stay away from thank you ham radio 🌞👍
My Buddy just got one of these and we tried it out on a local repeater and I have to say it sounds really good for a 30 dollar radio. It even says it has Cross band repeat built in. Pretty sweet cheap radio
@This Side of the Radio oh okay. Well he keyed up on it last night and I was on my Icom ID 5100 and he sounded really good. He was probably 5-8 miles from the repeater site and I was 30+ and he sounded like he was in the room right next to me.
I bought one a couple of days ago, I quite like it. Update: My radio developed an unusual issue in terms of RX..... When receiving RX from a voice transmission, I could not hear the actual words but only a strange series of clicks. I reset the radio a couple of times and tried again, but this did not cure it so I resorted to an age old repair technique, I gave it a sharp thump on on a hard surface, lets be honest, at this price I was not going to cry if it failed..... hey presto, it worked and in the last few weeks it has worked flawlessly. (dry joint ?)
Interesting way to look at how the spurs affect the nearby radios. The other effect is you have power going into the harmonic and not the fundamental. 73
Power going into the harmonics, true and a fallacy. It the harmonic is 30db down only 1 / 1000s of the main power go into the harmonics...moisture content variation in the air eat more power than that.
I got one a few weeks ago so dont need another one. I really like it for the price. Its easy to unlock all the bands except AIR. Our UHF CB is 476 so I unlocked 470+. I think the cps transfer is awesome and the radio should be a UV-5R killer because of the extra features. The harmonics I seen in other videos are attenuated by atleast 40dB so should be ok I think they said.. possibly a bit more would be better though. 🍻🤠
I actually got my hands on this handheld today. I like the idea of a wideband HT, even if it's just for scanning and receiving. It's got a lot of features for the price, it's just too bad it's not as clean as it should be.
One caveat: when you plug in your Baofeng programming cable your computer may tell you that the cable isn't supported. I went through Device Manager and went to a 2007 driver to make it work. So: Open the program first. CHIRP won't program it so use the radio program. Plug the cable into the computer. With the radio turned off, plug the cable into the radio. It won't program with the USB port. Turn the radio on. The "busy" light will be blue if it's ready.
Definitely like this handheld. And thanks for your review. You made some great points, and this will obviously spur some changes going forward throughout other handheld radios from other manufacturers.
Nah. I’m not just gonna type the magic word like I did above. This is a great video and I subscribed as well. My radio should arrive in a month. I just received the Raddioddity gs-5b and I am not impressed.
HANDHELD: I have one of these. It would be nice if it had more scan lists. for the price it's pretty good. I would like to know if there is an alignment menu. It would be interesting to know if TX output could be altered on 222MHz or a way to get it to transmit on 50MHz as well as AM mode on other bands. Military Aircraft in the 200-380MHz area use AM.
Good informative video. I assumed the pocket clip on the battery was deliberately designed to need a flat tool to remove it for security; it goes on easy enough.
I don't know how scientific it is, but I wanted to show people who may not be familiar with it. The fact that it had to be so close to the other radios leads me to believe they are very weak.
There has been extensive testing of this radio by a VK7 ham, on YT. It performs much better on the transmit bands when fitted with another commonly available whip antenna.
I bet they get right on that and the next one comes with Collins filters! I still laugh evetime someone complains about emissions on these. Hey FCC don't let them in the country so easy if they will not pass even the lax Part 97. BTW thanks for the thorough video on functions! I have one and your video is the best of several I've seen.
I read a ĺot the comments. Its worth noting that while the original Baofeng company is non existent Quansheng has been around for decades dropping radios by the dozens. You can find reviews going back a long way. Will they improve this model? Im sceptical as the number of rebranded or pirated models down to $19 is huge. I think it's more likely they drop another variant. Who knows the mind of these companies they are inscrutable.
Handheld. It will be interesting to see if you get any answers from the company. I can't see them adding filters without it moving their price point out of their target market.
A long press of the top programmable function key is not an alarm. It's a 1750 hz tone used in Europe to open some repeaters. The bottom one is definitely the annoying alarm though.
I've been thinking of getting one of those little handheld radios just to listen to air traffic but I heard that can only happen if I am close to the airport tower🤔 Is that true?
To hear the tower itself you’d need to be fairly close on the stock antenna because it’s not resonant on the air band frequencies. An external antenna would make the AM reception much better. I can hear approaching aircraft just fine, just one side of the conversation.
Waiting for this to arrive BUT I noticed the programming cable isn't included in the box. I am unable to find an official program cable in my country. Do you know if any of the Baofeng program cables work with this one?
The only thing I don't like is to do am mode ,you need to go all thru the menu and set it for only am . Vice versa for setting back to fm . Wish there was a one button fast mode switch . Do you know , is that something that's possible to program to toggle on 1 button using chirp.
@@K5QBF I won't put in for the radio as I have 5 portable radios at the moment and that is more than enough, LOL they are multiplying. Very good review though and enjoyed watching, thank you!
Yea I had triplets in no time. I bought the first one and then Quansheng found my channel and asked if I would like a test unit. I didn't know they would send two. Thank you for watching, I still consider myself new to all this CZcams stuff.
Handheld
Thank you for this video. I appreciate that you don't just read the specs and show some testing with it!
Thanks for watching Brian!
As soon as I saw it had Airband I was hooked lol. HANDHELD
Its ability to extract audio from AM is poor. You need to have a very strong signal before you can hear the speech.
It's a nice radio, Sensitivity is OK measured on my service generator except the AM aircraft band. Anything above 7uv's, audio starts to distort. So much for listening to the aircraft band. Good program software.
It’s usable on AM, but definitely needs improvement.
This was REALLY helpful for a new handheld owner, Cheers mate 👍
Handheld : Great review on the radio, I hope the manufacture lists and makes the suggested corrections.

My Buddy just got one of these and we tried it out on a local repeater and I have to say it sounds really good for a 30 dollar radio. It even says it has Cross band repeat built in. Pretty sweet cheap radio
The cross band repeat is a bit misleading. It’s more like dual watch with active channel priority.
@This Side of the Radio oh okay. Well he keyed up on it last night and I was on my Icom ID 5100 and he sounded really good. He was probably 5-8 miles from the repeater site and I was 30+ and he sounded like he was in the room right next to me.

Thanks Shane for he review of the Quansheng UV-K5 Radio handheld. To be honest it's better than I thought it would be. Just subscribed ! 73's Bill
Thanks for the sub Bill. I like the way they are headed in giving us something more feature rich.
Handheld. Great review. Nice to see features that aren't usually on "bargain" HT's.
I agree, I’m glad they are thinking out of the box.
I just bought a Handheld UV-K5, and your video showed me a lot of information--thanks!
Interesting way to look at how the spurs affect the nearby radios. The other effect is you have power going into the harmonic and not the fundamental. 73
I’m hoping they can filter this.
Power going into the harmonics, true and a fallacy. It the harmonic is 30db down only 1 / 1000s of the main power go into the harmonics...moisture content variation in the air eat more power than that.
All that RF @ such high Power? Keep it away from your body. And the harmonics/Not a very clean signal.. or so it's to be under stood. 🤨🤨

Hopefully they can get that addressed in gen 2.
HANDHELD, Very interesting and over the air could help out when another show up at an event and forget to program radio.
Hopefully it can be more industry standard.
Plus I’d love to have two of these to program. What a neat way to do it.
One caveat: when you plug in your Baofeng programming cable your computer may tell you that the cable isn't supported. I went through Device Manager and went to a 2007 driver to make it work. So:
Open the program first. CHIRP won't program it so use the radio program.
