I know he's not square and doesn't live underwater, but somehow he still manages to capture spongebob's essence 100%, and I think that's amazing. it shouldn't even be possible and this musical shouldn't even work (with everyone being clearly human and not fish) but it DOES. Everyone should go watch this musical, even if you're not the biggest musical fan or spongebob fan, in a weird way, it feels like the final episode of a great show I used to watch 15 years ago, not going out with a wimper, but with a bang. and I'm a guy who doesn't like that many musicals tbh (I love all the bands and artists who made the OST tho) 👍

Children would also dislike it because they would see their favorite characters turned into humans that barely sounded like the ones in the show, and with the lack of musicals in general for children, I don't think they'd know exactly how to follow along. This musical essentially became a hit with the people who watched the old episodes when they came out and with kids who only watched it because it's SpongeBob.

Things about this musical that I love:
    - The pirate bits
    - The way they made everything wacky but still artistic
    - Plankton casually stopping time whenever he talks about his evil schemes
    - Plankton and Karen
    - Tackles racism and discrimination in a way that kids can understand
    - "Land mammals go home!" followed by Sandy saying "I thought this WAS my home" hit me in the feels man
    - If you didn't tear up at Best Day Ever you're lying
    - Spongebob is ripped.
    - The fact that Spongebob being ripped weirdly makes sense since he's a martial artist and catches jellyfish as a hobby.
    - Squidward tap dancing and Plankton rapping is something unthinkable yet it baffles me how fitting it is
    - "It's the goverment's fault!" "it's the media's fault!"
    - Spongebob and Sandy's friendship
    - The sound effects guy
    - The maestro basically being her own character
    - Ethan Slater singing while upside down and climbing all over the place like how does he do that. Spare us some talent, man
    - The insanely creative glowing sponges during (Just a) Simple Sponge
    - Patrick carrying Spongebob bridal style
    - The actors accurately portraying the original voices of the characters, like that's so impressive
    - The way Spongebob walks is just...so Spongebob
    - The mayor singing opera during When the Going Gets Tough
    - The Electric Skates performing on actual rollerskates and skateboards
    - Pearl
    - The guy with the blue skirt pointing the red arrow. I don't know who he is or why he's there but I love him
    - When two characters are having an argument and the rest of the cast looks at them back and forth with the "woosh" sound
    - The newscaster getting increasingly disheveled as the story progresses
    - Creative use of props and stage design
    - I remember when the musical wasn't out yet and people were very skeptical of it. Some even said it'll be a disaster. But by some miracle they pulled this off and I can't be happier.
    - Probably a hundred other things but the list would be too long
EDIT: I keep coming back to add more things to this list lol

Real talk, putting "best day ever" after they found out the device worked and they are celebrating would have been smart; putting the song BEFORE they knew if the device would work and save the day was a stroke of GENIUS! It completely restructures the concept of the original song, and perfectly encapsulates who SpongeBob is: an optimist in the worst situations. And the fact that he was able to get everyone to sing along and make them optimistic too, including Squidward, is beautiful. I want to do a video on this song alone because its so perfect

Amen. That's why the scene always makes me teary. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression for most of my life, Spongebob's declaration of optimism is so inspiring. He finally puts his foot down against Squidward's cynicism. He doesn't deny the situation, but refuses to give into despair.
"Look! The sun is still shining. And the kelp! It's still... kelpy."

this musical is very, very near and dear to my heart, and I'm so glad someone is talking about its brilliance. I got to see it live and it was just so amazing. words cannot describe how great it is. one of the best parts, I think, is that there were generations of people (young kids who probably watch it currently, older teens/young adults like myself, and even people who were middle-aged) who were all equally excited to watch the shit out of that show. OF COURSE the show itself is amazing, but you already covered everything abt what makes the show spectacular in this video, so I wouldn't have anything new to say on that front
I'm a theater kid who worked on many shows as part of the stage crew, so the staging and set design makes me (positively) froth at the mouth when I see it. it works not only to immerse everyone in the world of the show, but is also insanely creative and fits right into the aesthetics of the cartoon. AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON THE CONTRAPTIONS THAT THROW THE BOULDERS!! watching them work irl was mind-blowing
(PS I am a "No Control" apologist bc that song SLAPS but I get where you're coming from with it not really fitting the tone. in my mind, it sort of fit in in a way bc it drastically changes the tone after everyone finds out the world as they know it is ending. it's still a bit of an odd one out in the sense that the tone doesn't really go back, but yeah I understand your point!)
sorry to drop an essay in the comments, I have a hyperfixation on this show and seeing someone talk about it makes me go absolutely feral in a very good way. I wish it had been open for longer, but I think the pro shot was a very good thing to come out of it. please, Broadway. do this more

I watched the nickelodeon airing well after the fact and then later got the opportunity to see one of the fresh off broadway versions of the musical live in San Francisco. The wierd sexual tension between Karen and plankton is palpable in the cable version but there's legit a scene I have lovingly dubbed the "big guy" scene where that sexual tension is kinda the entire focus. Spinny office chair kiss and all. It's sweet and definitely not anything I haven't seen in general audience musicals but it makes sense why they wouldn't include it on the cable version. It is nickelodeon afterall.

I am such a sucker for bittersweet songs, and when they began singing it in a sort of melancholy i started tearing up. spongebob has and always will be a huge part of who i am today, and seeing it turned into something more (that still had a soul in it), see the liveliness, the heart and the soul behind it in a new form is also a bittersweet thing to me. i just love it so much.

This musical's proshoot was the single best thing I spent money on this year, and I paid my university application fees 4 months later. I have watched the show at least 6 times since then and every single time I love it and appreciate something different about it. It deserves SO much more conversation in theatre circles, especially among people who love Starkid shows like Twisted and Trail to Oregon. Just brilliant. The set is so gorgeous and I haven't seen anything that strikes such a good balance between intricate and child-like since Matilda with all those alphabet blocks as part of the set.

The only thing I liked about Shrek The Musical was how The Banished Fairy-Tale Characters got to take matters into their own hands and stand up to Farquadd, while revealing that he's a son of a dwarf. I especially liked how there was a variety of them, from The Ugly Duckling, to Peter Pan, to All 3 of the Three Bears.

I think one of the reasons Spongebob has so many musical influences is because that's how the original show was. If you take a closer look at the soundtrack from the show and the games, you realize that it's musical styles are very widespread! There's instances of country, rock, jazz, and of course, Hawaiian music! It would make sense that they'd want to capture all those genres together by hiring many different artists. :)

I saw this show on Broadway while it was in previews and I have to say, it was unlike any other musical experience I've ever had. It may partially be due to the cultural relevance to SpongeBob for me as I grew up with it as a huge part of my life, but my goodness. I can't tell you what it was like going into that show, seeing how clever it was, how it felt cheering for a character I loved as a child, and ultimately the tremendous amount of effort and creativity that went into making the stage version feel, at least to me, respectful but different than its source material yet has its own identity.
It helps that Ethan Slater is one of the most talented people I've had the pleasure to see perform live in my whole life. The design is inspired, and if you ask me, an extremely creative way to make certain aspects of Spongebob's universe work in a stage production, a medium so different from the style of spongbob's animation that it seems like an impossibly bad idea.
I left the night I saw this show happier than I'd have ever thought I would. I came to it expecting for it to be bad, and it actually blew me away with a mixture of nostalgia, appreciation, and ultimately what was actually good despite everything possible going against that reality.
