    In this video I compare Windows 8.1 vs Chrome OS with two low cost sub $250 laptops, the HP Stream 13 and Asus Chromebook C300. Sporting very similar hardware but with very different operating systems are either of these right for you?

    The build quality looks so flimsy. I dislike the warping on the screen and the way when you type the whole keyboard appears to move on the Chromebook, eek. GREAT comparison though, you pack so much info into 5 minutes!

    • @MrMega200
      @MrMega200 Před 9 lety +5

      The build quality would be due to design. They were designed to be cheap. Most larger laptops I've worked on have a solid metal frame that the LCD mounts to while these smaller and cheaper laptops only have two metal posts and no metal bar support over the top or below between them. Can't say all netbooks, chromebooks, and ultrabooks are like this as I've only worked on one netbook in the past.

    Would you recommend getting a Toshiba Chromebook 2 (330€) and use it coupled with a slightly upgraded Office PC running an older Core 2 Duo with 4GB DDR2 RAM?
    I am not into heavy gaming, and was just curious whether it would make sense to use a Chromebook with my outdated PC. The Chromebook mostly for web stuff obviously and the Windows PC when I really need MS Office, or want to code for school, or want to play lightweight and old games such as AoE2.

    I bought my last laptop for school in early 2011. It's still running fine. I tried Ubuntu to see if I got better performance as it was starting to slow significantly, and it helped a lot. I'm currently running win 10 on it after upgrading from 7 and have no complaints. I have upgraded ram from 3GB to 6 as well as replaced the processor with a better one. The great thing about that is both parts were very cheap, {4GB ram $20, dual core processor (forget speed) $10} this is a big boost to the life of this and I fully intend to pickup another cheap one when the time comes, as this has worked out so well.
    Now I do only use it for browsing the internet, basically. No gaming or anything like that. I have a bigger desktop with much better specs for work and using apps that are more intense. Though I do use my laptop to run old emulators (SNES, N64 and such) So lighter games to work fine. I suspect for most users cheap laptops are just fine.

    $70 gets you a 2006 MacBook: Better screen, better keyboard, better trackpad, better specs (for the most part), better everything. Run Windows or Linux on it and you're golden. If you want to pay some more, get a newer model.

    • @asdfasdf4345artsdfg
      @asdfasdf4345artsdfg Před 8 lety +1

      ***** No - if you want Linux/Chromium OS or Windows 10 on a 2006 MacBook, you can install them both just fine; thus, it can be a cheap Windows or Linux laptop. You can pick up a 2007 model with a 2.0Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM. In terms of build quality, this thing is STILL built better than various Windows PCs today. If I were in the market for a cheap laptop and didn't care too much about buying something brand-new and ultra light-weight, I'd just get the MacBook.

    Been using the HP for three months at the university. Immediately disinstalled Windows and got Ubuntu and... it's great. I need to browse the internet, watch movies and write. Power is enough to do this without slowdowns, screen looks good, battery life is quite impressive, keyboard is good (even though "page up/down" keys on the right are annoying), all doesn't feel premium but it doesn't even feel cheap at all. Storage is tiny but get a 64GB micro SD for $15 and here's a great student computer. Major issue with trackpad software on windows (Ubuntu is much better). Seriously, this is not a toy or a single-use computer. Treat him right and you'll like it.

    Would you rather :
    a) Buy a Chromebook
    b) Buy a low spec Windows laptop
    Answer : When it comes to low spec computers I would rather buy a Chromebook because of the less tense operating system that comes with it. I don´t use desktop programs, so for me a Chromebook is okay because it doesn't come loaded with shit bloatware as other Windows laptops. Its just the browser, all you need for writing documents, listen to music, play simple games etcetera. Believe me, I have a low spec Samsung laptop with windows 7 and it´s a horrible experience ....

    • @repload12
      @repload12 Před 8 lety

      +Brian Samuel This whole argument makes no sense. Windows 8.1 (and now 10) is much lighter than windows 7 was, so that comparison is ridiculous. Also, you do use desktop programs, even if you use a Chromebook. Every OS has native apps or it simply wouldn't function. Windows just has a more established desktop ecosystem. And in response to the bloatware argument: why not buy signature? Microsoft actually sells top selling windows PC's like the stream in signature editions that come free of any bloatware. And if that doesn't appeal to you, you can just do a clean installation of windows using a recovery image from Microsoft and nuke the bloatware yourself. Then at the end of the day, you'll have a stable widows PC that runs faster that a Chromebook and still has access to the entire chrome ecosystem via the browser.

      Well, it's not a hard disk, it is flash memory, an SSD. You can install small OSes on these things and still retain 30 if not more gigabytes in your SSD. Slap a MicroSD card in for that extra 32 or 64 gb of storage and you're set for general computing, such as internet browsing, and even light steam gaming. Yes, there are programs that can be huge, but they are normally games (coughcoughCoD:AWcough) or the Adobe Suite.

Remove the shitty bloatware (IE, Microsoft Office (replace with kingsoft, lighter weight and free) etc.) and voici, a good smooth-operating laptop that's relatively cheap and can even do light XP-era gaming (BF1942, Warcraft II, CoD 2, DOOM)

      carson819 why on earth would any student need an i5? That is a serious overkill. If you have that at school, I'd question to see if it has anything to do with money laundering.
      I got my parents a PC with a Celeron CPU, it works great for what they do - browsing, videos, office programs, etc. It would have no problem running some developer tools as well.
      A Core i5 is an overkill even for a budget gaming PC. Unless you get a top end video card, you don't need a Core i5. And Core i7s are for SLI/Crossfire builds.

      Not bad for a laptop, 8GB of RAM is essential and that's also a pretty good processor. The HD 3000 integrated graphics aren't that great though, you could probably run most games at the lowest settings with that processor but without dedicated graphics you won't max out anything. All in a solid laptop though.

    I would take the Stream because it runs Windows. That’s it.

    Why is it that the HP Stream link is to a much less powerful version of the one featured in the video?

    I have the ASUS Chromebook computer featured in this video and have owned it for the past year. It doesn't support MANY of the same programs as a windows computer, and I could not get anything done. I guess it will work if you only use the internet browser and no other programs. The viewing angle is PAINFULLY horrible if you plan on using it on a non-level surface like on your lap or on a bed. It can't function without Wifi, which is bad for traveling. and after just one year of normal use (no dropping it, taking good care of it, etc.) there was a glitch in the programming and it stopped charging the battery completely. Now since my warranty has recently passed, I have no way of returning it. Worst laptop type device that I have ever owned in my life. Currently waiting for my lovely new HP Envy to ship in the mail. I can't believe that someone endorsed such a horrible product. How much did ASUS pay this guy? Save your money and buy something that actually works.

      You're damn unlucky. My Chromebook never failed me and it's from ASUS too.
      Also ChromeOS is offline too, editing Google Docs offline until sync, watching a Play Movies movie synced offline, etc.

    Got a used Thinkpad T420 for $230 on amazon and it blows both of these out of the water in both specs and build quality so I am not worried about it having any problems down the line. Heck it handles games like The Sims 4 and Minecraft perfectly. No problems with the 4gb of ram and 500gb hdd. Heck the i5 is solid as well. Picked it up as a replacement for my tablet that wasn't working well for me in day to day tasks. So now the tablet is used as an ereader and video player if I don't feel like pulling the laptop out.

    I wish ASUS would release this exact Chromebook model (okay maybe slightly improved specs) with Windows. I love the design but the only offering from ASUS at the moment is the 11 inch X205 and that's just a tad too small. Not liking the look of the HP Stream 13. So ASUS get on that thanks ;)

      1. You can use a USB
      2. POST is on the Mobo and i don't see why they wouldn't have one.
      3. This is irrelevant since you would would not be using the Chrome OS to do this.
      Please atleast know SOMETHING before you comment.
