Here is the first performance of Barnum from the British championships in 1982. you will see that some of the moves they used later at the Worlds are not quite the same. Commentary by Alan Weeks.
I remember holding my breath for almost the entire time during the finals in 1984 and 40 years later that sequence is no less breathtaking! Ice dance perfection.
Chris’s choreography ...UNBEATABLE , He is genius and Jayne such a gorgeous technician with unbelievable grace. I’m so glad I got to see them in my lifetime ..thanks to uTube,
Wow! Thank you for uploading this... yes, I can see why they made some changes, especially to the lift at the beginning and the end. AMAZING to think the British judges only gave this one 6.0!! Just a few months later of course and the first ever row of perfect 6.0s!
He still IS you great grandfather darling, just because he is no longer here, doesn’t alter anything. You should be very proud, he was a great commentator. Easy on the ear.
This was the first version of the routine, performed in November 1982. Between then and the Europeans, the couple worked on polishing and improving the routine. It was while practicing a cartwheel for the opening sequence that Jayne had a bad fall which meant they had to withdraw from the Europeans, so the routine was not seen again between the British championships and the Worlds in Helsinki the following March. The first time I saw it my jaw dropped open at the new lifts and flips.
OMG. Thank you so much. I always knew that they had revamped the program from the British to the World's, but I never realized how much the program changed. Thank you again for posting this rare gem!!!
they were and still are the best, thank you so much for uploading - was looking for this for so long; so upbeat, happy and sooooooooooooo faaaaaaaaaaaaast! manythanks
Interesting to see original programme! Something I have noticed when looking back to Torvill and Dean and, I think, other skaters at that time - the minute they finished their performance, they bowed to the audience, not kiss and hug each other first! More of a polished finish I think!
Jayne made two mistakes. They are so perfect it's freaky. 2:41 and at 4:22 Jayne almost fell. She must have been ill. Chris is not happy at the end. You can see it. However, they can both fall and they would do it so well, I would give them a 10. It's amazing how they just keep going on, and how Chris grabs her. You can barely notice anything. I love them.
I'm rereading the Hennessy biography - she wasn't ill, she was unprepared for how her costume would feel during the routine. Right from the beginning, she felt like it was in danger of slipping off one shoulder or the other, and it made her very cautious - and Chris somehow picked up on that too. You can see her fiddling with it when they're in the kiss and cry. I came to rewatch this vid to see, and I hadn't realized previously that indeed changes were made to her dress by Worlds. A bit more of her back was covered, the shoulders came up higher, and there was a deeper v neckline on the dress she wore at Worlds. Guess they didn't do full dress rehearsals back then.
4:04-4:08, good angle to see the move. Most other performances you see the move with Jane in front and was always hard to fully appreciate what they were doing. Just fantastic.
That's because at the World Chps (they didn't compete art the Europeans because of Jayne's injury) they cameras were on the wrong side of the rink (i.e. not the side the judges were sitting). If you look at my 'Torvill & Dean Barnum practice' clip you'll see Barnum as it SHOULD be seen
we still miss his informed comments; for one thing, he knew when NOT to talk - sometimes I think commentators now are paid per word, so feel they need to talk all the time. Now the $64,000 question - do YOU skate?
@szqsk8 the commentator is the late and much-missed Alan Weeks who did most of the commentaries for the BBC in the 1970s/1980s. He retired after T/D won the Olympics in 1984, saying he couldn't think of a better way of going out.
Does anyone know why the britsih version was made slightly differently to everywhere else they performed it? Its nice but I feel the other routine, matched the music better and was more entertaining, it had that wicked lift at the end, and this one is flatter. Just curious.
mammy83 They always worked on improving their dances between the British championships and World's. They usually tweaked parts of the routine but in 1994 they changed 80% of Lets Face The Music and Dance for the Winter Olympics after only just winning the gold at the Europeans.
Dances were always a work in progress throughout the season. Even Bolero was different in its first incarnation. There was only one dance that was never changed from the beginning of the season to the end, and that's Mack and Mabel.
5.9 is great but ridiculous, should be 6 across the whole board, nobody else came close to T&D. Saw them live at Nottingham as I lived there then, they were breathtaking.
I think because it was the British championships, the judges were more critical. Also remember this was early in the season (November) and T&D did make several improvements to the programme before the Worlds the following March
There was also a fall when Chris dropped Jayne during a lift at a practice session, resulting in a shoulder injury for Jayne that kept them out of competition for some weeks
Such a pity this was recorded in the days before multiple soundtracks: I'm sure Alan is very knowledgeable, and in one place does add information, but I'd much rather have had it without the commentary. But thanks for uploading!
The top sovjets were much better in technical skills, also in expression. They are to slow in comparison with the sovjets. To high scores for them. Its a shame......
I remember holding my breath for almost the entire time during the finals in 1984 and 40 years later that sequence is no less breathtaking! Ice dance perfection.
Never be another pair like these 2
Chris’s choreography ...UNBEATABLE , He is genius and Jayne such a gorgeous technician with unbelievable grace. I’m so glad I got to see them in my lifetime ..thanks to uTube,
Crazy not to give a 6 for artistic impression - what else could they have done !
Amazing they are xx
No one has surpassed these two to this day , and NEVER will !!!!
Absolutely wonderful I remember watching live
I remember that routine and the gasps and cheers from the audience.
Anyone giving this a thumbs down needs to have a serious word with themselves.
It was always an incredibly exciting moment every winter when we got to see their new routine for the first time. I miss that.
I never tire of watching these great skaters, wonderful.
They were and are fantastic! Even today I don't think anyone will ever be as good as they were!!!
One of their best routines after Bolero, and in front of their home crowd too. What wonderful ambassadors they were, and are, for our city
This was the year before Bolero
есть в этой паре какая-то магия... они как одно целое. Совершенство!!! Восторг и восхищение! БРАВО!!!❤
So unique these two.
The Best of the Best
They were the smoothest, most creative skate pair ever.
As always the British Champs had some amazing camera angles that really helped you feel the routine.
just lovely...I remember so well then they began skating and became so famous...and all the hard work and devotion to their craft thanks for uploading
Wow! Thank you for uploading this... yes, I can see why they made some changes, especially to the lift at the beginning and the end. AMAZING to think the British judges only gave this one 6.0!! Just a few months later of course and the first ever row of perfect 6.0s!
This is such an exciting performance! I love it so much and everything else they do.
Love them! x
I find this so exuberant and joyful, it actually brings tears to my eyes.
Superb stuff! I was a young kid but loved the music and the performance 😊
Alan Weeks, is (was) my great grandfather :-)
A wonderful commentator in every way, Kayleigh. I met him briefly at the 1994 European Championships in Copenhagen.
The voice of ice skating ☺️
A perfect voice for commentating
He still IS you great grandfather darling, just because he is no longer here, doesn’t alter anything. You should be very proud, he was a great commentator. Easy on the ear.
He had dulcet tones ,Alan ,lovely commentator who obviously was a huge fan of T&D .
Feel honored to have seen them live several times.

Costume change too. I never noticed this before. Jayne clearly not comfortable with that dress
Thanks for this explanation....I was puzzled because I was sure at the end I'd seen Jayne flip over Chris's back...must find that version now.
Лучшая и непревзойдённая танцевальная пара
OMG. Thank you so much. I always knew that they had revamped the program from the British to the World's, but I never realized how much the program changed. Thank you again for posting this rare gem!!!
Truly beautiful and elegant skating pair !
Brilliant thank you for sharing a brilliant piece of history.
We're a tough lot to please us British, just one 6! It's interesting to notice the changes they made to the programme. Thanks for posting
These two are just one on the ice!
they were and still are the best, thank you so much for uploading - was looking for this for so long; so upbeat, happy and sooooooooooooo faaaaaaaaaaaaast! manythanks
I love this program. I didn't like it that much at the time they did it oddly enough but I really love it now. The music is so happy and upbeat!
For ever my idols torvill and Dean, the Best
Absolutely amazing ❤
I have enjoyed then and I'm enjoying it now
Best skater ever
Thanks for posting, I can see the changes they made. They got a row of 6'S at the Worlds, but only one in thir own Country!
Fantastic 😊
Something different indeed and truly wonderful

Thank you for posting this. I almost think I like this better, with all Jane's faux-clumsy moves, but I can see why they made the changes they did.
Absolutely the best ever!
Torvill and Dean simply the 👌

Perfection
I always get goose bumps watching them in this and bolero, any really!
My favorite of all of their routines.
Это шедевр
One my favorites of theirs

Ooh yeah the changes but you still can't fault the magic of T&D....:O)
Вертуозы!
Stunning 😊

Thanks, he was super but I think he did continue after 1984, he was there in Copenhagen 1994 when they made their comeback.
thanks :)
Первая часть великолепна, потом можно уснуть
Yes, you're right, I must have been getting mixed up; I still miss his informed commetns"
❤
Хочется смотреть и смотреть на них
Гениально!
Tak jak Oni jeździli, nie jeździ nikt..Genialnie❤
Excellent
None can match them!
6.0

Are you sure? I think I remember Alan Weeks commenting on the skating in the 90s...
edwarrj1976 I think that would be Barry Davis 🤔
hey...do u have any more rare clips of TnD?
play some techno along with the 5.9 riff - you've got a party.
Cspeciali 🎉🎉🎉
Who is the guy doing the commentary? Is he a skater? He sounds like one of The Beatles.
Did they ever fall
Famously they fell in practice trying to make the first lift an overhead cartwheel and had to pull out of Europeans that year
There was also a fall when Chris dropped Jayne during a lift at a practice session, resulting in a shoulder injury for Jayne that kept them out of competition for some weeks
They made a few changes to it and for the better
Юмор, гротеск, трюки. Чисто английский стиль. Юмор ситуаций или юмор положений.
Such a pity this was recorded in the days before multiple soundtracks: I'm sure Alan is very knowledgeable, and in one place does add information, but I'd much rather have had it without the commentary. But thanks for uploading!
Why no knighthood and damehood? The honours system is a farce… !
Doskonali😂
The top sovjets were much better in technical skills, also in expression. They are to slow in comparison with the sovjets. To high scores for them. Its a shame......
🤣
