- A playthrough of Acclaim's 1998 license-based first-person shooter for the Nintendo 64, South Park.
South Park, the first game to be based on Comedy Central's hit animated series, is a 3D first-person shooter that loosely adapts elements from the show's first season into five episodic stages.
A fast approaching comet has begun raining down all sorts of unspeakable horrors on the town of South Park, and when a group of third grade boys learn about this otherworldly menace from the elementary school's cafeteria cook, they take it upon themselves to save the day.
Episode 1: Operation: Turkey Butt 2:40
Episode 2: A Clone of Your Own 43:10
Episode 3: Close Encounters of the Bovine Kind 1:02:43
Episode 4: Something Wicked This Way Clucks 2:06:26
Episode 5: Some Disassembly Required 2:46:34
South Park for the Nintendo 64 didn't review particularly well, but I seem to remember a lot of people raving about it. Critics called it out for its lack of substance and its pedestrian gameplay, but fans of the show generally loved it for how faithfully represented the source material.
At the time, I liked it. I wasn't enamored by the gameplay, but the idea of exploring South Park in 3D was novel and exciting, and the cutscenes, fully voiced by the show's cast, were a real treat to see from a cartridge-based console game. It was also hilariously profane at a time when swear words were still a rarity in console games, especially on Nintendo machines, and the split-screen deathmatch mode was a blast.
The appeal of its novelty and humor was key to the game's commercial success, and I wish the same could be said for the substandard gameplay.
I wasn't big on console FPSes in the 90s, especially on the N64. The controller was an abomination (a hot take, I know), and the experimental control schemes that developers came up with ruined a good many N64 games for me. Being that the game was built on the Turok 2 engine, South Park's controls were better than most, but I have always struggled with the way it aggressively auto-centers your view when using the analog stick. It wrestles you for control every time you try to aim off-center, and it's incredibly frustrating trying to keep the crosshair steady for a distance shot with the camera constantly wobbling up and down. The controls didn't feel great in 1998, but in 2023, they're not just baking brownies: this shit has been burnt to cinders.
The graphics are fine by N64 standards. The show's flat shapes and simple character designs translated nicely to the N64 hardware and the aesthetic is spot-on, but the game's look is marred by the super short draw distances, the heavy layer of fog used to disguise pop-in, and the rough framerate in the later stages. If you're using the expansion pak, setting the graphics to low-res like I did here will boost the framerate a little and get rid of the interlacing artifacts.
The sound is also fine, but the short music loops are annoying and the in-game voice clips and the turkey gobbles are only funny the first hundred-or-so times that you hear them.
(Also, keep in mind that everything I'm saying here only applies to the original N64 game. It's one of those games that truly demonstrate how much more power the N64 had under its hood than the PlayStation. Appaloosa's PS1 port was unbelievably terrible.)
Like the show, the South Park game was a clear product of its time and should probably be left there, but going through it again for this playthrough was an entertaining enough throwback to waste an afternoon on.
What do you guys think? Do you love it? Hate it? Or, like me, did you like it 25 years ago but nowadays feel that it has gone too far past its sell by date?
(Sorry about the lack of music during the UFO stage! It got tagged by the YT copyright scan.)

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! - Hry
Fun fact: This game used the Turok 2 Seeds of Evil engine and even had its composer, the great Darren Mitchell.
Man, I didn't know this makes so much sense to me all these years later!! Turok 2 along with this were 2 of my favourite games on N64
Seeing this game instantly warps me back to 1998 directly into the aisles of my local Blockbuster video.
That comedy central logo......
Hows your back today? Its raining alot so mine is killing me.
Those were the good days lol
@@senseicorey9979 I hear ya, I love that logo too.
Poppies for me lol
I’m not sure why the turkeys used to scare me when I was a kid. The foggy map and a horde of turkeys just chasing you 😂
i know it was a fun game though. I remember playing this in 4th grade lol
South Park was a crudely refreshing take on how to adapt a TV show for a video game back in 1998, but the past 25 years haven't been particularly kind to this N64 FPS.
The Ps1 version didn't age well either. probably worse.
@metalboo8491 Hahaha oh man, I enjoyed this version way back, but the PS1 version was a dumpster fire from day one. Looking back on it, I'm amazed that anyone could think it was of good enough quality to actually sell.
@@metalboo8491Oh, yes, that is the worst port, by far. Lol
Hence why the N64 version was highly praised
The PC version didn't hold up too well either
I remember renting this and Turok 2 back to back and thinking "Hey, wait a minute... this is practically the exact same game but with a different skin..."
Pretty much!
Technically speaking, they are.
Doesn't surprise me when I looked at the developers and when you remember both games were published by Acclaim.
Acclaim is notorious for this, just look at the wrestling games.
@@LITTLE1994 only less complex and focused on killing enemies
My parents would not let me watch this show until I was 16, but man, everywhere I looked there was a South Park T-shirt or a stuffed Cartman doll or grim reaper on Halloween aiming for whoever dressed as Kenny. Great show, still going strong.
as a kid I noticed a lot of Beavis and Butthead and thought that was a Nickelodeon show
N64 really handled the power for the cinematic intro before Dreamcast
This playthough is still longer than the new COD campaign
lmao 🤣
I had this game for the n64 in the late 90s I still remember the password (Bobby Bird) it unlocks everything I think it does havent played the game in like more than 20yrs
I remember "OMGTKKYB" is a code for every character, it stands for "OH my God, they killed Kenny, you bastards"
I enjoyed the game back when I had it on the Nintendo 64. I will admit it's not aged well, but the silly weapons and enemies with which to shoot with said weapons kept me entertained when I played it. No matter how you feel, the N64 version was far better than the PSX version.
I remember fondly playing this game as well as a weekend rental. Not sure i actually completed it. BUT your critiques are all valid for sure.
Summary of Cartman's phrases in South Park (N64): *k i c k a s s*
Apparently there’s an upcoming South Park game that could combine elements of the 3D South Park games of the 90s with the rpg games of the 2010s
Honestly I’m interested in seeing how it all plays out
Me too. I'm not sold on the idea yet, but my interest is piqued.
@@NintendoCompleteThis Looks Like Some South Park Game Released By Jaleco IMO
Looks like you was right
If you are talking about Snow Day, well I'm guessing you are not interested now.
@@JustinJTime idk the game still interests me
The fact that south park snow day combines elements from the n64 and Playstation games, and the stick of truth and the fractured but whole helps make the game stand out
A 90's favorite.
Not going to lie: I have a soft spot for this game. I couldn't get into the alien UFO when I was a teen first playing it, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. And I also love the note from the instructions that the boys don't actually die when they lose health; they just get mad and quit. You can see that in the face icon.
I rented this game more times than I should've at the time, and looking back - I dont know why I enjoyed it so much. Maybe because it was like Turok and I really loved Turok, or exploring the town scapes in this shooter is a vibe I really liked. Either way, even with its numerous flaws - it's still a game I hold fond memories of. Especially weird since I didnt care for the show a t a l l.
First heard about this game in an late 90's xmas ad. 🎵Jingle Bells, Santa smells, Christmas really stunk...🎵 It showed South Park along with Zelda OoT, Star Wars RS, and Turok 2. How 'bout that.
🎶I got nothing that I liked; my gifts were all just junk! Boxes full of clothes…CDs no one knows…when I wanted something for my Nintendo 64! Zelda’s great, Turok 2, South Park would be fine. How about Rogue Squadron? That game should be mine! Mom and Dad, I’m so sad. La la la la…🎶
Not a very good game, but it's a masterpiece compared to the Playstation version!
On PS1, cutscenes are taken from PC and N64 versions
4 kids repel a comet of pure evil. Just another day in South Park.
I know this game gets maligned but I had fun with it back in the day
Anybody remember the earlier seasons of South Park where Kenny gets killed near the end of the episode?
Definitely.
"Oh my god, they killed Kenny! You bastards!"
i memba
I do. They made a T-shirt out of it and everything.
Yes. Stop making me feel old!
Yeaa i memba
this was the first FPS game i ever played.
Same
Been watching a lot of South Park thanks to the endless marathons of it on Comedy Central. But I still feel like not much has changed from this game, even with Chef's prominence and Randy and Butters being completely absent
What
It's because this was most likely made near the first season of South Park, Butters and Randy were rarely used in the first seasons, so that's why (same thing with the prominence of Chef)
Watching this makes me feel like im 13 again sitting in front of my N64 "with giant tool sticker" playing.
One of my first N64 games
I don't know why but for some reason I've been meaning to actually get a cartridge of the game, considering my older brother has a N64.
Although, I have emulated it in the past and remember finding it to be pretty fun. And also failing to get the PC port to work properly since it has something to do with 3Dfx...
Yeah, you need a Glide wrapper to run it properly in accelerated mode iirc. If your computer has a good CPU, you could try emulating a Win95 PC with a Voodoo card in PCem and play it that way.
Thank you for playing this. I can't wait for the new game Snow Day. I expect it's gonna be a combination of this game and The Fractured But Whole.
Fractured and Stick of Truth are awesome. Makes you feel like you're in a season of the show.
Oh man...this one. I remember this one. Being older and wiser, this game gives me Serious Sam vibes with the enemy waves and constant necessity to keep your ass moving to stay alive. The first few stages can be managed without having to go full hypersweat, but the later ones took some serious grit, an entire weekend, and a bladder full of soda for your average preteen game enthusiast to complete.
No joke, if you managed to beat this without cheats at such an age, please tell me which divine entity you are descended from, because i want to know your destiny.
I miss you chef.
This is something Nightdive Studios should definitely consider remastering
Dude. The absolute magic they did with turok. They could fix this game.
Fun game, with a super quirky soundtrack that's still on my iPod to this day.
My parents used to make me mute the TV when I played this game
Whoever thought pelting mutant turkeys with (at times urinated) snowballs would be rather satisfying?
Nothing says friendship like nailing a buddy in the face with a piss soaked ball of ice!
@@NintendoComplete IN THA FAAAAACE!
I always heard this game sucked chocolate salty balls, to the point where Trey and Matt themselves disown the earlier games made for the license. At least they eventually led to something far greater (The Stick of Truth and The Fractured Butthole)
Too bad it took so many years later until we finally got a proper South Park game.
@@LITTLE1994
Better late than never.
This games good. The controls are just a little wonky and takes some getting used to
Better than PS1 version
I like PS1 version, N64 version & PC version of South Park (1998)
@@dvdreview7956 but PS1 version lacks voice clips and cutscenes are recorded from n64 and PC versions
What’s wrong with the PS1 version
@@dvdreview7956 the audio quality is poor.
And there’s the same voice clip during every kill
WHAT!?!? THE FINAL BOSS WAS THAT EASY!!!!?!? I STRUGGLED AND THAT STUPID ROBOT HEALING IS BURNED TO MY MEMORY.

@@ziguizal_do_game uuh...sure?
I just remerb hearing that you could peeing on snow as a kid.
Amazing this is the very first southpark game ever.
And it shows.
As a south park fan i like this spin-off and all the esence of the series is there. The fog effect is a bit disturbing, but i understand is due 64's limits.
PSX too, fog was the best barrier ever
Brings back memories
The intro make me think of the fifth with the evil planet thingy.
Takes me back, i had a n64 since like 1999 to about 2009, reminds me of being a kid in 2001 lol times were kinda good than, i liked this game i beat the game a few times without saving
Playing this on delta app on my phone with a controller. I love this game. Brings me back to after school days when i was 8
18:59 damn Cartman can swim
I thought cartman was to fat to swim
He swims great here too! 1:15:57
This game needs a remastered and come out again on the newer console i would play this all day
hopefully someday we'll get a qol patch w/ other updates and improvements as the original development was probably too rushed
Why do the tanks at the end have the voice of jack nicholson?
1:11 Chef dancin
I just rememeber never being able to make it past the Renaissance fair. Them turkeys always got me. I couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 though. I'd love to replay it now but it looks a little repetitive 😂
I’m going to order purchase this Game and Play it. Lolol😂😂😂 just to snow ball those turkeys 🦃
I still remember the ultimate cheat code is bobbybird
south park snow day looks fire.
I loved this game when i owned it as a kid... but I also had a chance to play this game on the PlayStation (which i never even knew existed when i first searched around for it).
In the (very) unlikely event that they remaster this game, they'd better get rid of all that fog!
i wish this game could come to xbox just like Turok did i miss this game such a simple but fun game to play
Sadly played this game in the early 2000s as a kid on N64
can be added on n64 switch online???
I used to fuckin love this game so much. Forgot it existed for like 20 years!
Anyone know how to unlock Chef as a multiplayer character WITHOUT using cheats? I played through the game twice, he's the only one I'm missing. Is there even a non cheat way to unlock him? Scrubbed through a few other play throughs and didn't see anyone else unlock him either.
Multiplayer was fun
Use to love this game 😂
How can you play with the horrible vertical stick control? I just can't aim vertically lol
It is pretty bad. My wrist hurt after playing this for how rigidly I had to hold my hand to steady the view.
If i remember correctly, i rented this one from Hollywood Video and never actually finished it.
Aww Kick Ass!
This game taught me if i ever see a ufo make sure to have some dodgeballs on me to take it out 🔴🛸💥
I love how the game immediately opens with an ad.
When do we find Ned Gerblansky in the gameplay
Please make a remastered version!!
0:38: stan: OH MY GOD, THEY KILLED KENNY! kyle: YOU BASTARDS!

BobbyBird. Ill never forget that
I don't even remember where i got the code but i sure as hell remember bobbybird
@@toothyluna4042 same. Probably...some obscure AIM chatroom
played this as a kid and dont remember anything besides the first part of the game
I loved playing this game...my favorite south park game
Bobbybird
Only the real ones know
Love this game
Never forget
I have to beat this game myself
I definitely say it's a relic of early South Park, but Stick Of Truth runs circles around it
Bet trey and matt never liked this
Game cause they never had the freedom to do whatever they wanted.
Acclaim probably gave them a bunch
of do's and don't.
You can't curse, you can't say anything
Sexual etc.
They wouldn't cut loose until stick
of truth and fracture but whole.
Also the new one coming.
We can now play this on delta!!
The GBC game of South Park was scrapped
Too bad this come out like a year or 2 later. Then it could've taken advantage of the Expansion Pak.
It actually does. Without the expansion pak you don't get the intro or the high rez modes.
Why does this game feel so surreal and weird 😰
Smh I can't believe I used to play this bs... then came 007.... oh God was a change coming!
Your not alone trey and matt probably
Hated it as well.
We wouldn't get a good southpark
Game until stick of truth and fractured but whole.
Also the snow one coming.😂
Probably cause of censorship.
Acclaim gave them rules of what
And what not to do.
Can't curse, can't show any dirty
Images etc.
As bad as the reviews were for this game, it still looks fun.
41:45 Dudes!
cool game!
I know you want to play the game in 3D but could you try to play Luigi's Mansion on Gamecube, I think it was the best title of the game and the first launch release on Gamecube, because it would be fun if one of Mario's brother, Luigi, would like to take a role as a ghost catcher and of course I promise I'm ignoring your video, because that game was my childhood but not not the Gamecube I play but only in CZcams because I need to unlock my nostalgia from hence they came from so that would be good idea for the request.
6:59 is that pee snow ball?
4 hours of gameplay and they really only have 1 soundtrack
0:47 intro
We own this game but idk what my siblings did with it
Watched for an hour to try and see what’s so good about this game. Man if this was good video games were shit I rather read books for fun then that

That digital Les claypool still looks tits
This game is rough. I recall making it to the second level as a kid. But getting no further. Now I realize it's because i was tired of the same turkeys
I got this cib for $60 a few weeks ago.

Kenny disliked this video
I've only heard of "Stick of Truth" its sequel. Didn't know there were other South Park games.
As for my thoughts on the show itself, I think it's pretty good... until season 8. Modern South Park is as unwatchable for me as modern Family Guy and American Dad are.
🤨
Yeah, there were a few that came out around this time. After this was a trivia game and a kart racer.
Yeah, most fans of the series who are familiar with the modern games don't know about the old games that came out during the show's early seasons.
L take. Love Shack and Kart Racer are good, as are the later seasons of the show
@@pyrobison2002 The later seasons are garbage. They're nowhere near as funny as early South Park episodes. New characters like PC Principal sucked and they even butchered Cartman.
The intro song is incredibly disturbing for no reason
