Thanks Pete for the this great review. You are correct, it is 17 (or 18? can't remember now) degree per side, finished on Wicked Edge. I haven't updated my instagram for the past couple years but I will now :). Usually I post on bladeforums and here instead.

Nitro V? Rope cutting? My great granddaddy once cut through 50 miles of barbed wire with a Buck 110 during the Great War and the blade came out sharper than when he started. That's real quality right there.

Great result! As they say, the three most important factors in determining edge retention are, in order: geometry, heat treat, and the steel itself. I guess this supports that viewpoint.

Not many custom makers gonna take their knives down to that degree. Of course you can ask for it and they might agree. I bet it’s because of it being nitro v it just made sense to take it there. Nitro V at 61hrc sounds like a good thing. See how well she gets a edge bk on?

Pete, curious question here. Have you either made or thought about making a video comparing cutting performance after a fresh sharpening vs restropped after edge has worn down to "not easily slice through paper"? I think it would be interesting to see how much cutting performance you'd loose from fresh sharpened edge to bringing it back with stropping...since i'd imagine you loose a bit with every re-alignment of the edge as you round/convex the apex each time you strop. Just a thought, love to see a test like that but thanks for the content that you already have made!

Have been looking into Nitro V to make a prototype - it looks innocent and demure, yet has sly hidden tricks up it's sleeve; it's a stainless razor steel with very fine structure, and so edge stability & strength, with a bit of nitrogen replacing chromium, and a teensy-weensy bit of vanadium. "Too little vanadium to form carbides for edge holding" I hear you say? Yes, but thats not what it's there for; it increases toughness and strength WITHOUT forming clumpy big carbides (which you dont want on a non-PM steel), and the nitrogen helps this along further, but also increases rust resistance considerably. And it's simple, so appeals to purists!

Is cost a factor in creating this new steel for the knife industry??? S30 is great stuff so is “D2”. It depends on the treat. Hello. If most of our knife compnies use communist chineese labor to maximize profit, dont yu think they’d use average or 1cut above it too??? 🔪if the utubers making the$$ they say they are these knives are made for pennies! on the dollar.
