Now that we've set the stage, do you have an idea of what a horse stance is? It is the fundamental stance in both ba gua zhang and all Chinese martial arts. And in fitness, it’s pretty much an isometric exercise. In this position, the feet are placed shoulder-width apart, parallel, and flat on the ground. The body weight is evenly distributed, with fifty percent on each foot.
Take a look at this picture so that you’ll get a clearer view. As you can see, it’s looks like the position on how people sit on horses, right? Well, that’s exactly why it’s called the horse stance.
So, what’s so special about this stance? And more importantly, why is it transforming the body?

Almost the first thing he says is that the feet are ~shoulder-width apart while showing a picture of a guy standing with his feet apart at least twice that. 😞

Good catch! I noticed that also the narrator says "Martial arts training had a significant positive effect on wellbeing" leaving out that the study shows ""Martial arts training had a significant BUT SMALL positive effect on wellbeing" This killed the credibility of this piece for me 100@

@@KnowOneKnows Yes charlatans use the word 'significant' when they should say 'statistically significant'. Even then, the difference may not be large enough to be visible to the noticeable to the "naked eye". Only by reliance on esoteric math and statistical theory do they find a 'significant' difference from placebo. In many cases there is no clinically significant difference.
They are hoping you won't notice.
My little joke: What kind of a nutcase are you, anyway? Reading the study! Look ashamed!! 😁😮‍💨

@@KnowOneKnowswell very important note is that the horse stance is not defined as being done with feet shoulder width apart-that’s why none of the pictures show that. Basically it’s poorly edited video, not done with care.

@@KatJaguar1122 Hi Kat, Thanks so much for your reply. I'd ask you for a reference to a better video on this topic, but YT would kill it. Please advise the optimal width for the feet, as I am having some knee issues and don't want to worsen them. TIA! :o)

I heard one fitness instructor say don't worry about the width or foot direction of your stance, or straight back in the beginning. Work on getting more upright and all the rest slowly. Hearing that took a load off my mind. I'm such a silly man sometimes. I started doing it a lot more. And improving!

Ah, the horse stance, a classic isometric exercise. While it certainly has its benefits, it may not be the most effective method for building a muscular physique. Isometric exercises primarily focus on static muscle contractions, which can help improve muscular endurance and stability. However, to build a muscular physique, incorporating dynamic exercises that target specific muscle groups through a full range of motion is generally more effective.
To maximize muscle growth, it is important to engage in resistance training that includes exercises such as weightlifting, bodyweight exercises, or resistance band workouts. These exercises create tension in the muscles, leading to muscle fiber breakdown and subsequent growth during the recovery phase. Additionally, a well-rounded training program should include a balanced combination of strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and proper nutrition to support muscle development.
Remember, the key to building a muscular physique lies in progressive overload, where you gradually increase the intensity and volume of your workouts over time. This allows your muscles to adapt and grow stronger. So while the horse stance can contribute to overall strength and stability, it may be more effective to incorporate a variety of exercises that target specific muscle groups for optimal muscle development.

Try the Kenpo horse stance. I think it’s better for your knees. You’re not using your knees as a prop.
In China standing in a Horse Stance is called Standing on Stake. It is a type of qigong.
In China they hold this Stance for hours.
