Was fortunate to hear her magnificent performance of Janacek's Jenufa in NYC in Carnegie Hall in the late 80's. She was at her peak and the standing ovation after Act 1 of more than 15minutes still stands to this day (2020) as the longest ovation in the entire history of that great hall!!!!!
Gabriela Benackova wurde mit ihrer Rusalka berühmt, obwohl sie auch mit anderen Partien nicht minder glänzte. Ihre ebenso klangvolle wie warmherzige Stimme verzaubert auf das Schönste. Das Miterleben des begnadeten Vaclav Neumann am Pult, der wesentlich zur Aufführungspraxis der Rusalka beigetragen hat, sollte dabei nicht vergessen werden.

There's a complete recording of Rusalka with the same conductor(Neumann) and soloist(Benackova) on the Supraphon Label recorded in 1981. I highly recommend it!

Recorded in 1988... A certain "old school" formality about it all, from what musicians wore, to how they played and even the style of singing. Still lovely; a performance that has not just aged well, but is timeless.
The "old school" is much better than this, too much nose!

BRAVA! The best singer that performes this delicate aria/song so beautifully and so smoothly - as it should be. It is after all a water nymph that sings her devotion to her beloved and it must be done delicatly and softly. I have heard many singers and none of them succeds like this marvelous singer does. She really sings a soft song, not a melodramatic, overpowering aria. Very moving, thank you.

As Leopold Mozart advised his son Wolfgang; never make music that offend the ears, and Gabriela voice does not offend. Beautiful with no sharp edges, just velvety beautiful. My favorite version.

Glad to hear this. Fleming is a fabulous artist ( a Slovak heritage helps) but there is a difference in tone, not pronunciation, which Slavic artists convey. Cheers.

Lovely recital, beautifully sung, of a beautiful number from Dvorak's RUSALKA, Act I :) ... but without the words in our own language, preferably on the screen but at least in the SHOW MORE section, much of the meaning of it all is lost ... :(

She cant sing czech to save her life so no she dont own this aria.
No, Ms Beňačková is far far better. Ms Fleming's Czech pronunciation is terrible!!! And it is only one reason why she cannot own this aria. Ms Beňačková is better also vocally....
